There was no sign of Patrick the entire night. When I asked Amelia where he was, she just told me that he was taking care of some business with a weird smile before she left.

What business would a spirit have? Was it some kind of a direct sales job?

    Ridiculous.

I didn’t let spirit business bother my day. My dad left at around four in the morning, and I found it difficult to go back to sleep.

4.52am and Patrick still was not here. I had never stayed up this late, so I never knew if he always disappeared at this the time.

The television was turned off and there wasn’t anything interesting on anyways. I decided to grabbed my smartphone and play some music.

The cheerful guitar strumming was playing a delightful rhythm, as I sang along with the beautiful lyrics.

press play to listen to the music

    You by the light

    Is the greatest find?

In a world full wrong you're the thing that's right

Finally made it through the lonely to the other side

I couldn’t deny that I was not used to not having him by my side anymore. He truly had changed my world for the better.

You said it again my heart's in motion

Every word feels like a shooting star

I'm at the edge of my emotions

Watching the shadows burning in the dark,

And I'm in love and I'm terrified.

For the first time in the last time

    In my only life.

Thinking of my protector, made warm feelings surrounding me like a big soft blanket fresh from the dryer.

    This could be good

    It's already better than last

And love is worse than knowing

    You're holding back

I could be all that you needed

    If you let me try

Could this really be a good thing when we were living in different worlds? His body was cold when mine was warm. He was untouchable until a full moon. Even with all that I had just said, he was still all I needed.

You said it again my heart’s in motion

Every word feels like a shooting start

I'm at the edge of my emotions

Watching the shadows burning in the dark

And I'm in love and I'm terrified

For the first time in the last time

    In my only life

I only said it cause I mean it

I only mean cause it's true

So don't you doubt what I've been dreaming?

Cause it fills me up and hold me close

    Whenever I’m without you

Honestly, I had never thought that I would say that some day until Patrick was standing by me. I knew that he knew that I meant it when I told him I loved him.

You said it again my hearts in motion

Every word feels like a shooting star

Watching the shadows burning in the dark

And I'm in love and I'm terrified

For the first time in the last time

    In my only life

The song slowly ended perfectly and everything was silent again. And this made me think of him even more.

    Sigh. Patrick, where were you?

“Miss me?” a familiar voice naughtily whispered, making me shudder.

I turned around suddenly and found the person I missed the most. “Patrick!”

“Yep. It’s me,” he grinned and quickly leant close to me until our noses touched, or at least I felt them touch. “What’s up?”

I repelled to ignore his cuteness and considered his look. He was not as bright as he used to be. His hair was not the way that it should be. And those eyes, they were obviously tired.

I needed to know what was happening too him.

    “Where have you been?”

My protector said nothing only giving me a calm smile with a look as if he was saying beg me if you want to know.

“Patrick,” I straightened my voice to make him stop fooling around. “Where?”

“Let’s say I didn’t go flirt with any cute spirit so don’t worry,” he teased me and leant even closer. A second later, a cold touch was gently rubbing my flawless cheek. “I was working on my promise, to keep them safe from dark spirits.”

“What promise are you talking about?”

His blue eyes fixed on mine while he caressed my cheek, as if the thing he was saying was very important. “The promise that I will keep whoever looks after you safe from dark spirits. They are eyes for me.”

I couldn’t explain how delighted I was to know that he worked harder just to keep me safe.

“Remember the day that you were first attacked after the dance?”

How could I forget that horrific day?

“There were so many dark spirits that night. I had been dealing with them since the sun set and… I was late to you.” His eyes were low and sorrowful.

“Are there any others like you helping with the dark spirits too?” I changed the subject. I knew that we both didn’t want to remember that day again.

He shook his head. “There are not many of us high pure spirits, Emma. According to the small amount of us, I’m the only one who helps them. The other ones; they are too weak, or too selfish to get involved with their fight.”

I could sense the anger in his words. “Are you talking about Amelia?”

“For being too weak, yes. But not for being selfish.”

“Who are you talking about then?”

“I’ve heard that you can see a person’s past when you touch them?” he changed the subject.

Okay. He didn’t want to talk about it.

“Yeah. When my left hand touched my dad’s, I saw his past.”

“Really? Is it a side effect from Lucas’ attempt to sacrifice you?”

    “We all believe so.”

Patrick pondered a few seconds and quietly said, “Sometimes, it’s better to know nothing…”

    “Why?” I asked.

“So you wouldn’t be able to judge someone from their past.”

My guard stayed quiet as he said this. I recalled the time I had seen his past in the mirror, when he was happy with Roxanne; I had thought that he wanted me to take her place. I had judged him from his past before.

    “I’m sorry…” I said. “If only I didn’t fall for Lucas’ tricks, things wouldn’t be this harsh…”

“It’s okay, Emma,” he said, but I knew that it was not okay. He was still feeling bad about this entire thing.

We both didn’t have anything else to say so I just lay back in my bed and tried to sleep.

Patrick said he was the only pure spirit who protected the others from those soul eaters; the easiest and fastest way to keep them safe was to complete their last unfinished.

The only one who could do that was I.

Was this my destiny? Should this be my priority?
