After my seventeenth birthday, my life would never be the same again.

That was such a nice show of transforming,” said the angel of the death who had an hourglass in his hand.

Patrick straightened up and faced Benjamin. “What are you doing here?” he said steadily and pointed to the door. “Go back to where you were.”

“I’m afraid that it’s none of your business,” he said.

    “You’re not welcome-”

“Plus, if I wasn’t there, Emma wouldn’t be alive,” he cut Patrick off and turned his head to confirm the fact. “Am I right, Young lady?”

My protector was holding his fist very tightly.

I couldn’t deny that if Benjamin hadn’t been there on time, I probably wouldn’t be alive.

“What do you want, Ben?” my dad asked to stop the fight. He threw himself onto a couch and closed his eyes.

“Do you see this hourglass?” he lifted the humid medium hourglass a little bit higher so everybody in the room could see it perfectly.

It was a simple life-hourglass only the top part wouldn’t soon be empty!

“I’m here to do my job, taking souls and leaving. Don’t forget that it’s a hospital. People die here everyday,” he smiled calmly.

“Then go do your job. We need some private time together before those annoying reporters come here,” the angel was not easy to get rid of.

“You knew that her life was not going to be the same after her charm cracked but still you risked her life by letting her walk around. To me, I don’t think it’s a good idea, James.”

“She will meet a gypsy to fix her charm in a couple days. We know how to handle it,” said Patrick but no one seemed to listen to him.

My dad opened his eyes and paid full attention to Benjamin. “What are you trying to say?” my dad asked.

“What I’m trying to say is she will never be safe again. Nothing can fix the charm to be as powerful as it was. Martin has told you about this, I’m sure,” he paused and pulled out a roll of paper for my dad.

Told him about what? My charm? What about my charm?

As if Benjamin could read my mind, he explained. “Your charm was made from a piece of a witch’s soul for a core. After it cracked, the protection started to leak.”

“I knew that already, why won’t my charm be as powerful again after it has been fixed?”

“A gypsy is not a witch, young lady. You will have to meet the gypsy very often to sew the crack. Your life is not going to be easy again.”

“You said that like it had been easier before Lucas took me.”

The angel ignored my sarcasm. “Read it, James. It’s her only chance.”

He was beginning to frown as he was reading. Without hesitation, he threw the paper onto the floor and was very angry. “A chance? You call it a chance? Fuck your chance, Ben!”

I wondered what the paper said but I didn’t dare to ask when my dad was this pissed off.

“What does it say James?” Patrick asked but he never got an answer.

Benjamin calmly picked the paper up and put it back in his coat. “Think about it, James. This is the best way for her.”

“I know what is best for my daughter!”

He shrugged. “If you say so. I have to do my job anyway,” he walked pass my dad and stopped by my bed across Patrick before softly rubbed his gloved-hand on my head, as he looked into my eyes. I remembered what his hand looked like under this black leather glove, the burnt-skeleton hand that pulled the souls from their body when their times come.

“Try not to be taken again, young lady.”

The way he was looking at me… It was the same way that Matthew looked at his sister.

“Pretty much. You just remind me of her,” he smiled warmly.

My eyes opened in shock. This dude could read my mind!

His lips expanded wider as a yes. “If you need me, you know where to find me.”

“Get the hell out of here Benjamin. Don’t make me call a security guard,” he roared as he tried to control his emotion.

“I will see you later, young lady,” Benjamin said one last time before leaving the room.

Not too long after the angel left, my dad left too.

    What did the paper say?
