ลำดับตอนที่ #4 : TCL1: New Friends
I couldn’t believe what I heard. My mouth opened wide in shock, and I immediately closed it. Eric was my grandfather. And that meant…
The curse had already come after me.
“This is the reason why you see Martin, Amelia and Patrick. Every time you start to see them, your eyes turn this dark,” he held the mirror right in front of my face as he leaned his head next to mine.
I looked at my reflection in the mirror. My natural brown eyes had changed to black–as black as the jewel on my pendant. This made me run out of words to say. This couldn’t be true.
I tried to find the reason why this had to happen to me but eventually, I couldn’t deny the fact that my life would never be the same again.
My dad took a step back standing between those three people–spirits - who had already stood right next to him.
“Your necklace is one of the three charms that Laura gave to Eric to protect him and his family.”
I touched the charm. This charm had belonged to my grandfather. I closed my eyes and tried to think about him –the selfish man who played with a girl’s heart. I couldn’t blame Laura for all the shit that had happened to me. Only if Eric had never played with her feelings, this curse would never have come after me.
“Before I proposed to your mother, I told her that the curse would come after her if she decided to spend her life with me but she was very brave –brave enough to tell me that she would spend her life with me and make a perfect family no matter what would happen,” my dad said it quietly. His voice became so shaky. He never forgot my mom. Every night, before he went to bed, he would talk to her –with the picture of her beside his bed.
I couldn’t remember how my mom had passed away. My tears were slowly pouring down on my cheeks and splashing onto the floor. I wasn’t sure if I was crying for my mom or my life that I had to face from now on.
“It’s okay, sweetie. You will get used to it,” my dad softly rubbed my head and held me in his arms.
Martin, Amelia and Patrick just stood there watching my dad and me. I saw Martin pretended to wipe his handkerchief on his eye while Amelia and Patrick just smiled looking at me. Once again, I felt like I was a little girl.
My dad let go of me and said, “Now you need to learn things about spirits and how to live your life with the curse.”
“Why do I need to learn about spirits?” I asked.
“Because those dark ones are coming after you. You need to learn how to deal with them.”
“What!” I abruptly wiped my tears off. The feeling of losing was replaced by mixed feelings. I didn’t think I could handle all of this in such a short amount of time. It’s my birthday. All I wanted was just to party. Having some dark spirits coming after me was not in my plan.
What a great birthday gift.
I know that being a Russell is not easy,” my dad cut me off. “Let’s go to the front yard. I have something to show you,” he ordered and walked out the door. Martin and Amelia followed him, yet I stood still. There were many inexplicable feeling crossing my mind. For a second, I wished I wasn’t born a Russell. I shouldn’t have been Eric’s grandchild so I wouldn’t have to inherit this curse. I wanted to live my life like a normal teenager – shopping, hanging out with friends or flirting with guys. I didn’t deserve this on my seventeenth birthday at all.
Patrick walked to my side and said, “You know what? We can read people’s minds.”
I was appalled and started to freak out about having my mind read by him before he started to laugh like he was going to pee his pants.
Patrick tapped on my back –more likely tapping through my back. His touch gave me shivers, and goose bumps rose from my skin. “I’m kidding champ! Even five years old boy knows that shit like this curse and stuff is the worst birthday gift you can receive. Nothing you can do about it now. You were born with this and you have to live with it. Maybe after you learn how to live with it, this bad gift wouldn’t be that bad. Who knows?” he shrugged. I couldn’t help but admit that his word slightly cheered me up. Hopefully, it wouldn’t be that bad.
I walked to the door as he walked through the door. Was that something I had to deal with too? To watch them go through stuff in my house? Damn. I was hoping I would get used to it soon.
***********
Music was still playing downstairs. People didn’t care much about my absence since they had been having fun at the party: drinking, dancing and making out. They didn’t even notice that I went upstairs to the zone that they were not allowed to go. I walked pass them into the living room. As Patrick was by my side, he awkwardly tried not to walk into any of my guests. Avoiding those people seemed harder than walking through the wall for him, making me try my hardest not to laugh at his behavior.
“What’s so funny?” he asked like he was annoyed. His thick eyebrow suddenly formed a frown.
“Just the way you tried not to walk into those people. I wonder why you didn’t just walk through them like you did the door.”
“I don’t want to make them cold. It would be like I freeze them out like this,” I suddenly shuddered. My shoulder felt frozen where he swiftly ran his hand through.
“You don’t need to show me the tutorial, you know,” I rubbed my shoulder hopelessly to make it warm and opened the front door before walking out to the front yard.
My father, Martin, and Amelia were standing right next to the mailbox behind the white wooden fence. They all were looking at something across the street. It was something that I didn’t expect to see my entire life.
