Tonight was going to be a night that I would never forget.
Matthew handed his tickets to the girl who was checking them before leading me inside. I could tell that the prom theme had something to do with purple and black. This wasn’t hard to figure out since those colors were all over the hall and even hanging from the ceiling. There were white flowers and glittery decorations all around the hall. The sides of the hall, where the dining tables had been setup, began to be surrounded by many hungry people who were hungry for those delicious foods like cakes, brownie, snacks, chocolate, pies and soda. Every pillar of the hall had been decorated with white blooming roses. At the very front of the hall, there was a stage that the school band was playing live music on. Their best instruments had been setup there.
I walked around the hall with a glass of fruit punch in my hand while Matthew held another hand.
The live music was playing a tempting rhythm like it was calling us to join the dance with the others, which made Matthew lead me to the floor. He gently wrapped me in his arms and began to move slowly. He was a tall athletic boy with hazel hair. He probably was going to be the prom king. And I couldn’t think of anyone else but me to be tonight’s queen.
Matthew was currently my boyfriend. Well, having a boyfriend was fashionable. And the reason I chose him was because he was the hottest guy in school. I knew he always wanted something from me, but I wasn’t so quick to give into his persuasiveness. His parents were both doctors who owned a local hospital. They had always wanted him to date me.
“Emma,” he called as he pulled me closer to him.
“Yes?”
“Are you wearing contacts or something?” he asked while we were dancing in the court. I could feel his warm breath on my forehead.
“No. Why?”
“Well… They just look very dark and big tonight. I thought you had brown eyes though,” he said this as he scooted closer to me as he led our steps.
“Maybe it’s because of the dim light,” I lied and looked away. I hadn’t been wearing any contacts, but I knew why my eyes had turned black. And when they turned this black, it was never a good thing.
I couldn’t believe that I had forgotten to wear my necklace.
I took my hands off his shoulders and softly removed his hands from my waists, then stood still. I had to go home as soon as possible.
“What’s wrong?” he scooted closer to check if I was okay and wrapped his arm around my shoulder. Once again, I pushed it away before he could reach it.
“Nothing,” I walked away getting ready to leave the hall, but he suddenly grabbed my arm.
“Where are you going?”
“I have to go home.”
“Why? We just got here. Come on, Em. We should get ready for our crowns,” he convinced. “I bet you get stage fright. You should get used to standing up there. This is not your first time, you know,” he smiled before letting go of my arm and started to set his hair. “Let’s get ready for our crowns,” he smiled like a winner and took my hand in his, but I slipped it away.
“What’s wrong Em?” He frowned. He had been trying to touch me like he owned me the whole night after he picked me up from home.
“Nothing,” I cut him off to avoid more questions from him. Matthew would never stop asking questions until he got what he wanted. “Let’s just get ready,” I lifted up my fuchsia dress a little and walked forward to the stage. I wanted to end this night as fast as possible so I could hurry back home.
I walked through a crowd of people who were still dancing. Live acoustic music was still playing. The band on stage really knew how to get people into the music. There were many couples holding and leading each other’s steps as some others were kissing. Suddenly my arm was pulled back, making me fall in to Matthew’s arms.
“What?” I asked steadily. I didn’t like to be pulled like this.
“You’re so cold to me, you know? You have been ignoring me the whole night. Are you mad at me or something?” he held me against his body as he moved his hand on my bareback, trying to calm me down.
“We should get ready for our crowns,” I tried not to make eye contact with him so he wouldn’t see how I was changing.
“I know, but I wonder if I could get a good luck kiss from you,” he whispered seductively, before he leaned his head over me as he tightened his grip on me until I was encapsulated in his arms. Before I could think of anything, I pushed him – very hard - making him take a few steps back. Matthew looked at me like I was a stranger to him. He was neither angry nor mad at me, but surprised.
“How could you –”
“Don’t try to do anything like that again. I mean it. You know what I could do to you if you make me angry,” I aggressively turned back and continued walking to the stage.
The music had already stopped. People stopped dancing and started to walk toward the stage as an announcer grabbed his microphone and started blabbering. This was the part I hate the most when I come to a dance party. Why couldn’t he just say welcome to the party and enjoy your night? I didn’t have enough time for this. I really needed to go home.
Like I was in a daze, I hadn’t noticed that they put the spotlight on me, or realized I had walked on to the stage and had a crown on my head. I looked around the hall. There were about two hundred people here who were dressed in their best-looking outfits. I noticed that there was a door in the back. I felt like trying to flee from the scene as fast as I could. As people kept calling my name and Matthew’s, they also kept saying kiss kiss kiss with their hands up in the air.
I glanced at Matthew who had been insecure to see if he was going to say anything, and I was glad that he didn’t say anything at all. So I grabbed the microphone from the announcer and said, “Thank you for voting for me,” before giving it back to him. I know it was short, but I was running out of time.
As I walked down to the floor, there was dark smoke at the exit door.
“Oh no – not here please,” I started to look for an alternative way out. Then I spotted the fire exit and picked up my pace as I headed towards it. From walking, I started to jog, and then began running. These high-heels made it even harder for me to run, especially in this big crowd. Those shadows kept rising up from the floor before forming themselves into anthropoids. I could feel them glaring at me.
“Please, let me go home. Please –“
