    Fate watched from the shadows.

He stared after Heart wondering if the kid would be alright after all.

He felt bad; it was the middle of the night; he knew the kid didn't have much money on him. But he also knew he had made the kid, so frazzled he wouldn't be going back to his workplace.

Which had been the whole reason for this whole charade all along?

    To save Heart.

When he first saw the string turn, when he first saw what Mara(1) had done, he hadn't understood why he was saving the kid. Why was he so integral to everything? When he had reviewed the life, the kid had already led; he seemed like a sensible guy, but not important enough that Mara would single him out and steal his thread from him while he was resting.

But then he had come down here to investigate, to see if there was any point in saving this one life.

The boy Heart was cautious enough to wonder where he was being taken. But smart enough to know not to start something he knew he couldn't win.

But he had been kinder, gentler than he had expected.

And he had been so out of sorts when the kid had clumsily screwed with his thread, messed up his strings, but the most shocking thing had come next.

Fate had just meant to get back one string that was his, and when the kid knocked over the strings, he was currently holding he was pissed because he had five human lives to pick up, dust off and get back to where they were supposed to be.

Worst of all, if he spent more than a few minutes with any human they needed to have their memories erased, because knowing about him was detrimental to my very existence. But then Heart, whom he had kidnapped, stopped and stayed after he had let go of his wrist. And he had taken responsibility for his mistake and cleaned up the string simply because he saw it meant something to someone else.

It was immensely interesting to watch as the thread he shouldn't have been able to touch cooperated, making it easier to clean up. Normally seeing the thread alone was a feat. But the strings had not only appeared to him, but had allowed him to touch them, cooperated with him, and a single string had glowed brightly for a moment when he first touched it. One of the brightest sparks he had ever seen in his entire lifetime of watching over the universe.

    It flabbergasted Fate.

    This boy was amazing!

Kind... A different sort of light, in this dark world.

He was pleased he had bested Mara again...

Try to steal a phenomenal light like him from the world. Not on my watch.

But what did this mean for the future for both of them? Especially for Heart...

Fate had originally gone into this annoyed and reluctant. Angry he had been forced to step into the human world at all, to mettle and undo his own work that someone else had tainted.

But these five lives had responded, calling out to Heart, he couldn't see it, he couldn't know, yet there was a thread that changed and called out to the one linked around Heart's own ankle.

This had suddenly become all too interesting.

    Very, very, interesting.

He watched the kid get into a cab a small intrigued smile played across his face as he did so.

Heart looked back, but Fate knew he was far enough into the shadows that Heart could not see him. As Fate observed for a split second Hearts leg glowed faintly in the taxi's light. Fate could make out the five small iridescent red strings before the door closed and the taxi pulled away.

"I wonder why it's you of all people, Heart?"

"You didn't seem like much to me at first... But there is something here."

"Let's find out what it is soon, Hmmm."

Fate clicked his tongue, then turned and walked off. The alleyway and its double street lamp light flickered strongly, and then Fate vanished.

Heart looked into the mirror and turned crimson. "It has really come down to this."

At first glance, the black suit seemed to fit him perfectly, but looking carefully in the mirror, it was clear the suit was not designed for a body like his.

    Specifically, a male body.

Where certain 'Allowances' were needed in certain parts that the suit was not made for.

"Are you sure you can't tell it's a girl's suit?" He said walking out of the bathroom, his face still flushed in embarrassment. He turned towards Min and adjusted the crotch one last time.

"Sure, you can't even tell." She said nonchalantly.

"Besides, you can't use your university uniform to get the job that would be embarrassing. And what other choice do you have? Neither of us has the money to buy you a new suit just for interviews. Interviewing doesn't last long enough to need a new suit. And no one asked you to grow five inches over summer."

Hey look at it this way, we are the same size in everything. You don't have to waste any money buying new things cause you can just have my old stuff. Isn't that great! The same size, you just don't have my boobs otherwise we are the same in everything and that saves us money."

    "What boobs?" he sneered teasingly.

"Hey, my boobs are bigger than yours at least, there are many women who can't say that." Min snapped angrily.

"Just wear it! Once you get the job and get your first paycheck, we can take you to get something discount, okay."

"But it's tight in... Certain places..." He whined and adjusted again.

Min looked back at him from the kitchen and then turned back to stir the stuff in the pot. But she wasn't fast enough and he caught a glimmer of a smile.

"You can't even tell at all. I promise, Heart. Really, honestly, would I lie to you?" She said, a hint of amusement coloring her voice.

"Yes." he said flatly, not even waiting for her to finish her sentence. She turned and stuck out her tongue at him.

He smiled, but turned back to adjust the tie in the mirror. Then groaned and went back to his room to take it off.

He folded it gently and got back into his at home, comfy clothes. With a sigh, he placed it on his desk for his eight am interview tomorrow.

It was embarrassing, but what else could he do?

He really had nothing but a plain white shirt and his university uniform other than that he had his everyday clothes and that just wasn't enough to land a position in this fancy company as a paid intern.

The pay wasn't much, but paid internships were hard to find at all, let alone get. And after what happened last month with losing his job. He needed this. He just hoped that his luck would finally turn around.

    (1) Mara is their version of a god of death in Thailand, or similar to it.
