Katekyo Hitman REBORN!, simply called REBORN! in the English version, is a series that focuses on the hapless and low self-esteemed Tsunayoshi "Tsuna" Sawada whose mother one day decides to hire a home tutor (or a katekyoshi) that turns out to be an infamous baby hitman, Reborn. Written and illustrated by Akira Amano, the series began in April 2004 as a one-shot manga released in a seinen magazine. Now your typical shonen action-packed comedy series, REBORN! has over 250 chapters and is still on-going.
Mafias, endless explosions, and a colourful cast that ranges from idiots to your hot-shot bad asses, REBORN! is a shonen at its best. Reluctant Tsuna, clumsy, average-looking, and academically inept is destined to become the tenth generation boss of the flourishing Vongola family or so Reborn says. Gaining new friendships, and attaining family members, Tsuna has a lot to live up to, but only if he can manage to stay alive. With the help of Reborn's Dying-Will bullet, a bullet that makes the victim live out their last regrets, Tsuna just might be able to change his life around.

The best word to describe Chrome is different. Before her life as Chrome Dokuro, her name was Nagi. She had always been a socially awkward girl and in turn received no love from peers or her mother and step-father. Nagi was always alone; she had never made a single friend and was always misunderstood.
She is innocent and straight-forward without even meaning to. Chrome only does what she thinks people would want from her, like only talking when spoken to and protecting Tsuna under the orders from Mukuro.
Gokudera: "What the hell do you think you're doing?!"
Chrome: "Greeting."
Gokudera: "Don't joke around!"
(vol. 13 ch.114)
Still as socially challenged as ever, Chrome does her best to fit in. In Asia, and this includes Japan, kissing is considered a rather intimate gesture. As her token of thanks, she gives Tsuna a kiss on the cheek just for standing up for her after Gokudera shows his disapproval towards her becoming a Guardian. Chrome tells them it is just a greeting, but due to her lack of social knowledge, she does not understand that a kiss on the cheek is more of a European way of greeting. Inserting some sarcasm, I wonder where she could have possibly learned this from?
Her sense of style, or lack of, shows a bit of her personality as well; Chrome does not bother to wear other attire other than the Kokuyo Middle School uniform, but we all know this is probably due to Mukuro's uniform fetish (refer to vol. 13's many gag comic strips). Ken and Chikusa change clothes at home/Kokuyo Healthy Land, so why doesn't Chrome? Other than the Kokuyo gang's lack of financial income, it is simply because she doesn't see the need. This fashion style of Chrome's shows how different she is from other girls her age, namely Kyoko and Haru. She was never like other girls, and never had proper female influences. While Kyoko and Haru represent Tsuna's blissful life away from the Mafia, Chrome is constant reminder that Mukuro is always there, even if the other guardians cannot feel his presence.
Chrome has a very gentle nature, that even an enemy at one point became attached to her. This "enemy" was Glo Xinia's box animal, Golfo Di Pioggia (Rain Owl). After Mukuro possesses and leaves it, the owl seemed to become tamed by Chrome, perching at her shoulder and even curls up beside her at night to sleep. Disregarding the fact that this is not your normal nocturnal owl, it seems that it can even detect illusions for Chrome.
"Cloud, behind you!"
Chrome Dokuro (vol.22 ch.210)
With the owl's help, she even managed to return the favour after older Hibari saved her life by assisting the present day Hibari who was not familiar with illusions. Chrome became attached to her new pet because it's now her only reminder of Mukuro, but even so she is wiling to protect it. Recall the traffic accident where Chrome had tried to save a cat. Chrome seems to have a fondness for animals, and would not hold them guilty even if their owner was someone who held animosity towards her. Unlike humans, they don't find her strange at all, in fact they seem to like her including the children I-Pin and Lambo. Chrome always has a clear head and would never let her emotions sway her opinion about others. She is genuine, down to earth, and would not judge others from mere rumours.
Chrome proves to be the selfless type, putting others above her own safety even if she may not have known them. She had nothing to live for back then, and was even relieved to hear she was dying in the hospital. When "Nagi" was trying to save a cat, a traffic accident occurred resulting in the loss of her right eye and several internal organs. Nagi could have been saved if her mother was willing to donate her organs, but even she didn't feel her daughter was worth saving. That was when Mukuro Rokudo appeared and gave her second chance at life, and a chance to feel needed. She left the name Nagi and became Chrome Dokuro.
"When Mukuro went back to your body after I defeated him, you went and jumped out of a 5th story window."
Glo Xinia (vol.18 ch.163)
When no one showed her love, even in death, that is when Mukuro came to her. He is the most significant figure in her life. For the first time ever, someone gave her a place where she could belong. Her dedication goes as far as jumping out a 5th story window just so Glo Xinia (an enemy ten years into the future) wouldn't be the one to give Mukuro his finishing blow. If he had to die, it would be a clean death, not in the hands of a psychotic murderer. Even if it was just one person who showed her kindness, she is grateful and this shows through her faith and admiration to Mukuro.
Chrome Dokuro is an anagram of Mukuro Rokudo if you see the hiragana and katakana that spells it out. Whether it was Mukuro who gave her this name for the sake of his own narcissism or because she decided the name for herself as way to show her gratitude to him, this question has never really been answered. Her name though shows that she is a part of Mukuro, and is a symbol of who he is.
She not only has his name and clothes, but also his hair. When she had been Nagi, her hair was long and black like a typical Asian girl, but with Mukuro she now has his pineapple hair even if she dislikes the fruit. Chrome doesn't seem to allow herself to be set apart from him. Ten years later when Mukuro grows out his hair, she does it as well. Chrome admires everything about Mukuro; his intelligence, his confidence, and charisma. Her future also focuses on Mukuro; she dreams of one day conversing with Mukuro in Italian. She adores him to no end and sees no wrong even if the world deems him as a criminal.
Chrome holds Mukuro in the highest pedestal. She addresses him as Mukuro-sama, because it shows how much she respects him. Sama is an honorific in Japan, such as -chan and -kun. Chan and -kun though are for peers, while -sama is used for parents, idols, or anyone else you would hold above you. Chrome feels he is the only one she can depend on and because of her child-like attitude, she feels lost without someone as wise as he is. When she first appeared in the future, Mukuro comes to her rescue once again. Chrome has never lost hope in Mukuro and this only adds to the debt she feels that she has towards him. He makes her feel needed, something she had to strive for with her parents and peers.
"If you die, we'll all be in trouble."
Kyoya Hibari (vol.19 ch.169)
After Mukuro disappeared due to his defeat against Byakuran, Chrome had now lost her life support. She does not even consider saving herself because she feels that Mukuro has fully lost connection with her. Older Hibari comes into the scene and tells her that the Vongola needs her and teaches her how to save herself. While Hibari's message may not have been a personal thing, Chrome begins to understand that other than Mukuro, there are others who care about her. This is her first step to independence without Mukuro.
During the Future Arc, we see that five years later in her life, even if it meant getting captured in prison Chrome did her best to free Mukuro. When Chrome failed, she ran away and cut off her connections with the Vongola and wasn't found until another four years later. After her younger self travelled to the future however, she now has a growing relationship with the Vongola which may change her new future. Even so, Chrome will never stop being thankful to Mukuro and would even follow him to the ends of the Earth.
Not only does she share a fondness for chocolate with Mukuro, another common trait we can see between Chrome and Mukuro, is that the two share the same weapon. With the trident, we can see a physical manifestation of Chrome's sense of perception or her connection with Mukuro. If it shatters, we know when her connection with Mukuro has been lost. She always keeps it next to her, whether it is for protection or assurance that Mukuro is with her. It is much like a shy child who hides behind someone they trust before meeting a stranger.
Along with the trident, it is evident in the battle against Mammon/Viper that Chrome has the ability to do two of Mukuro's Six Paths of Rebirth technique:
While the Animal Realm ability was most likely due to Mukuro's help, some people believe that Chrome's illusion powers were given to her by Mukuro, but I believe that cannot be so. When she could not contact Mukuro in the Future Arc, she uses illusions against Glo Xinia, and when the older Mukuro left her she could even use her own illusions, powered by the Vongola Mist ring, to make her own illusionary organs. Mukuro probably helped her awaken this power that is hers alone.
Like the average illusionist, with the exception of Mukuro who has the Asura Realm (a combat ability), Chrome isn't too good with physical brawls and relies heavily on long distance combat. She is a fragile girl that plays the damsel in distress on many occasions. Now TYL!Dino has assigned her over to TYL!Bianchi and I-Pin to help with her combat skills. Chrome is not a confident fighter and even the illusions she produces are based off of Mukuro's. We have yet to see how well she does after her new training, but we can be assured she'll kick ass against the Millifiore, and hopefully this time around, without Mukuro's help half-way through.
When she first met the Vongola they showed no trust because of her connection to Mukuro (and Gokudera had suspicions of her being possessed by the man). Tsuna trusted her, though only because of his Vongola intuition.
As the Vongola Mist, she came off as one of the two anti-social guardians, and saw no need for group huddles like in the Varia Arc. To Chrome, it just wasn't her thing and she preferred to protect the rings in a way that she could do so on her own. Even at the celebration party held for winning the Ring Battle, Chrome did not bother to attend it. Unlike Hibari who did not attend it because he hates crowds Chrome's reason goes back to who she is. She knows that many of them don't trust her yet, particularly Gokudera, and felt more at home with Ken and Chikusa, even if the two dislike her as well.
Chrome doesn't really know how to react towards others, especially when kindness is shown. When the girls, Kyoko, Haru, Bianchi and I-pin, show her friendship it is quite a shock. She had never felt an unconditional acceptance from others and always felt she had to work hard for it. For example: in exchange for Mukuro's kindness she does his evil bidding, to make sure Ken does not scold her she does as he says, for Tsuna and the boys she must fight for the Vongola, etc., etc. This causes her to shy away from the girls because she feels that it isn't right and maybe she even feels a little suspicious. When the girls still continue to try to befriend her, even after she tries to hide from them in her room, Chrome can finally see what a real friendship is.
Chrome has come to love the Vongola and will protect them, but due to her connection with the mafia-hating Mukuro, her alliance is still unclear. Out of all the guardians, Chrome is actually the most likely to betray the Vongola and we can see that through TYL!Dino's suspicion towards her even if it was her naive younger self. Her older self was not there in Vongola's time of need, and was even M.I.A. until Hibari's men had tracked her down. As much as she cares for her Boss, if Mukuro told her to deceive Tsuna we know that she would do so with little hesitation. Chrome is still a developing character though, so maybe after the Future Arc is over we may find out where her true alliance lies.
The naming of this site was quite difficult. Just what word really described Chrome? Her passive expression and her lifeless doll personality gave me nothing to work with. That was until I began browsing through some sites with a friend and we saw some very cute titles for music albums (particularly Heartbeat Radio by an artist I forgot). Who knew Heartbeat would be my chosen name? Putting some more meaning behind it, Chrome never really lived life when she was Nagi; even if it's not in a literal sense, Nagi was dead. When she met Mukuro, she actually felt alive for once. Hence the name, Heartbeat
