Online learning – how can I ensure quality for my child?

 With many schools and universities closing across the UK and worldwide, online learning is a hot topic.   But what is it and how good is it in reality?

There are many different forms of online learning but of course, nothing is better than 1: 1 face to face learning, where the learning is personalized and specifically tailored to individual targets. However, 1: 1 online learning has come a long way in very recent years.

In my opinion, technology has really only just reached a point of being at a good enough level to support quality teaching and learning.   The best platform on the market in our opinion here at ETS (and we thoroughly researched them all), is Zoom. The reasons are plentiful. Excellent video and audio content with screen sharing capabilities and use of an interactive whiteboard making the lessons engaging and interesting with plenty of opportunity for student participation.

Whilst schools have begun to consider closure, it has been very interesting to hear the mix of discussions about what online learning should look like. Some schools are dialing in their whole classes for online face to face learning time, whilst the majority are using online spaces such as Google Classroom for students to manage the resources and materials themselves.

Whilst using online spaces to hold resources has come a long way from handing out a textbook to go home in a school bag, it is down to parents and students themselves to organize their own learning time and the element of questioning, discussion, interaction, and accountability is lost.

Like everything in education, the quality of teacher-led online learning very much depends on who is delivering the Online tutoring . In a recent UK study, conducted by the Education Endowment Foundation, it was found that 1: 1 teaching was at its absolute best when delivered by a qualified teacher with the students' targets shared and skillfully worked towards.

It would be remiss of me to not mention safeguarding. When choosing an online tutor, parents must make sure that the tutor has a DBS enhanced certificate and that the lessons are taking place in a living room / dining room with the tutor in professional dress. Parents should still be nearby and check in with the lessons from time to time, just as you would in a face to face lesson. This is standard for us here at ETS where our lone working and safeguarding policies are agreed to by all of our tutors before they begin work.
