There was dark smoke coming up from the street before our very eyes. They were slowly forming themselves into the anthropoids – from head to toe. Their hands were forming into shadow-like claws. This was worse and scarier than any horror movie I had ever seen.

    “They are dark spirits.”

I had no doubt why people called them dark spirit. They had bloody-red eyes and small horns that seemed to keep coming out from every inch of their bodies: heads, arms and backs. They had neither noses nor ears. Their lipless mouths, made of jagged daggers teeth, reminded me of a snake –the king cobra.

Not including their bare bodies, they were a horrific sight to see. They were just dark and disgusting shadows. You couldn’t tell whether they were male or female shadows. I couldn’t understand how my dad could watch them with no concern. He didn’t even care how those dark spirits glared at him like he was their delicious dinner.

“We sometimes call them soul eaters,” my dad said like it was not a big deal.

“They love to eat souls to fill their hunger; especially virgins. It gives those youth and strength,” Martin added.

“They always hunt for pure spirits, and especially the virgins’. Nowadays, a virgin is very hard to find so they just start to hunt for kids,” Amelia said sadly.

A virgin? Okay – I was a virgin. I was like an appetizer for them. Their hungry eyes had been glaring at me, totally freaking me out.

“How do they eat the souls?” I asked.

“They feast upon the soul by biting through the skin of their victims, then draining their soul. The shadow then takes the victim’s body as a host like a parasite. The victim will eventually get sick and become unhappy. Eventually, the host will die from the sickness, unhappiness, and depression. Some hosts can be worse than others: they go insane and commit suicide –“

    “Just like Jessica?” I asked.

“Yes, just like her,” my dad turned to me. I couldn’t tell what was on his mind. Then I realized that Jessica was his mother and my grandmother.

“I’m sorry dad,” I lowered my voice regretting that I had mentioned something I shouldn’t have. I should have watched my words.

“It’s ok,” he looked away from me and became quiet.

“Well, they feed off of fear as well. Try not to be scared of them because it will just make them stronger,” Martin eventually broke the silence.

“And if you can see them and are a virgin, you are considered a delicacy for them because the more you see them, the more fear you would have,” Amelia told me.

All right. Thanks for the birthday gifts everyone. Thanks for telling me that I was the most wanted meal for dark spirits. How great.

“You see this fence? Martin has added his protection power to it. So when you feel unsafe, just run behind this fence,” Patrick said as he pointed toward the fence.

“So Martin is the house’s guardian?” I asked.

“Kind of. Laura sent him to protect the Russell’s house.”

Laura must really have loved him to make sure he was protected so well against the unbreakable curse she had placed on him. She sent him protectors, a charm, and a guard.

I watched the dark spirits try to come into the front yard but it looked like they kept running into a big invisible barrier above the fence. They screeched and tried to reach out for me. I knew they couldn’t harm me as long as I stayed behind the fence but still before took a few steps back. I didn’t want to be near their awful claws at all. I just needed some time to get used to this.

“Now I will show you how this charm works,” my dad stepped out of the fence and faced toward the dark spirits. He looked incautious of the situation.

Those three disgusting things turned and ran towards him at full force. They were about to crush him with their claws, but suddenly, their claws started to burn. They stepped away from my dad as they furiously glared at him while their claws were slowly regenerating.

    That was crazy!

“With the charm, nothing could ever harm you,” Patrick stopped by my side before giving me a warm smile. For some reason, his smile was so irritating to me.

My dad who looked like he wasn’t taking the dark spirits very seriously walked back behind the fence. “Just remember, whenever you forget to wear the charm, run back home. I know you don’t like wearing jewelry so I will have Patrick protect you.”

“Excuse me?” I had to be protected by this annoying spirit? How great.

“Looks like she doesn’t want me to protect her, James,” Patrick said and chuckled.

I tried to ignore his annoying laughter before taking a deep breath and said, “Dad, I promise I will never forget to wear it no matter what. I don’t need to be protected by this annoying spirit who seems to keep making fun of me all the time.”

Patrick had his mouth wide opened with shock, “watch your words, missy. I am not annoying!”

I rolled my eyes as I ignored him. “Dad, please. If you want me to be protected, please let Martin or Amelia protect me. Not this annoying child,” I pointed at Patrick. His jaws dropped as he saw me talking to my dad.

Patrick pointed at me angrily. “Look, you barely know me so don’t judge me, missy.”

I crossed arms and raised my eyebrow. “I don’t think you can protect me, mister.”

“You –“ I was sure he couldn’t find any words to say.

Amelia shook her head slowly. “I can’t do that, Emma. I am James’ protector,” she cut the conversation between Patrick and me disappointing me.

    “What about Martin?”

“He is the house’s guardian. He is not allowed to leave the house.”

    I guessed I didn’t have any luck.

I sighed. Patrick would probably let me die and then laugh about it on his first day of protecting me.

“I know you won’t believe this, but Patrick is the most powerful spirit of the three of us,” Martin said this made Patrick stick his tongue out at me. “If you don’t believe me, just watch how he gets rid of those disgusting creatures,” he nodded to Patrick who was smiling like a winner next to him.

“You are looking down at me, missy,” he walked out of the fence. There was no more smile on his face, not even a smirk.

As soon as he stepped out, all of the dark spirits immediately ran toward him and growled loudly against the live music inside the house. They had their claws in the airs ready to attack while Patrick just stood still and chilled.

Showing off, that was what I thought about him.

They were getting closer and closer to him. There were only a few inches left until they reached him.

I was going to yell at him to focus on his enemy at the same time as his smoky blue eyes suddenly changed to dark blue ocean color. He stared at them like he could damn them to hell. Before those dark spirits could harm him, they stopped as if invisible strings pulled them back. They screeched even louder and tried to reach toward him. Like time had stopped. Everything around here stopped moving as his body started glowing brighter and brighter.

What happened next made me have to look away from the scene.
