ลำดับตอนที่ #2 : TCL1: Strangers
The biggest change of my life happened to me two months ago, on the night of my seventeenth birthday party which my dad finally let me have it done my way since I had been bugging him for weeks about it, and after I promised him that there wouldn’t be any liquor.
Many cool people were invited to the party. No one had ever denied my invitation when I was one of the most popular girls in school, and the daughter of James Russell, who was the president of I.R. Corp, the software company. I didn’t even need to give people my address to find my house where it was the biggest in town and could be spotted from miles away.
Music was playing loudly downstairs as the party began. I checked my hair one last time in front of the mirror. It was perfectly curled. There was a lovely brunette girl who had brown eyes and glossy pink lips looking back at me. Her small button nose matched her round cheeks very well. Well, she was I, Emma Russell.
I elegantly walked down the stairs like a princess. Everyone was watching me as I climbed down each step. Some guys dropped their jaws in awe, which I thought looked funny. Eventually, I reached the last step of the stairs and walked to my guests. They all wore such great outfits, but none were on par with mine. Of course, this was not a cheap drunk high school party. This was Emma Russell’s party in her daddy’s big house in Beverly Hills.
As I walked through the crowd of people, I got happy birthday wishes from them. I headed into the room and stopped next to my dad, in front of the five-level cake that my dad had ordered to surprise me. That was so awesome!
Matthew, who always looked good in a tuxedo, walked to me from the crowd. His strong chest was envied by most guys and adored by many girls. He grabbed my waist and pulled me close to him. “You are so beautiful today.”
“Thanks,” I smiled back to him.
My dad clapped his hands once to settle everyone down, and that made Matthew let go of me. Music suddenly stopped playing. He stepped forward to the crowd of people and said, “To my beloved daughter, I wish you a happy birthday,” he said in his warm daddy tone. I looked at him and I saw a wonderful father right in front of me. All we had was each other since my mother had passed away when I was little. “I hope you like the cake,” he teased. Well, everybody knew how much I loved cake. I could eat tons but never once have I been overweight.
I tried to hold my tears in cause I didn’t want to mess up my make-up. I ran to him and gave him a big loving hug. “This is the best birthday I’ve ever had! I love you dad.”
“I love you too, sweetie,” he kissed the top of my head as he held me in his arm before starting to sing.
Happy birthday to you,
Squashed tomatoes and stew.
Bread and water in the gutter.
Happy birthday to you.
I laughed at his singing. He was the best thing that I had ever had –the best father in the world. He knew when I was either happy or sad, though we didn’t spend much time together when he had always been busy with his work. Since I had already had everything I needed in life, I just had to pretend to make a wish before blowing out those candles.
All my guests kept coming with their different sizes of presents and big ribbons, but the present that I had wanted the most was from my dad, who I had been bugging him for all week about what he would give me. I would never be able to guess because every year he came up with a surprisingly amazing present. Last year, I had got a big white teddy bear - as big as a six years old boy - with a red ribbon on it. Now it was sitting beside my bed.
My dad patted my head softly before handed me a small jewelry case. It was as small as a ring case.
“Is this a ring?” I slowly opened it with excitement and found a golden antique necklace inside. The golden pendant with a black round-shaped jewel in the middle of it mesmerized me. Onyx, I guessed.
It was hard to keep my eyes off this beautiful necklace. I never knew my dad had any antiques before when he worked with computers and technologies all the time. He surprised me again this year.
“I can tell that you like it,” my dad said and grabbed the necklace from me before gently putting it on my neck.
There were some unexplainable feelings that came up right after I had it on my neck. I didn’t know if I had thought it all myself but I just felt protected. It must be crazy to think that I was being protected by this fine piece of jewelry.
I shook my head a little to get the thought out of my head before giving my dad my sweetest smile. “I love it.”
“I’m glad you like it,” he rubbed my cheek lovingly. “Keep it safe, Emma. You need it,” he said and kissed my cheek one more time. “Enjoy your party, dear,” he stepped back into the crowd. He probably was going to his room.
Wait. There was someone walking after him upstairs. I knew everybody at my party but who was that guy? Why was he following my dad to his room?
My curiosity was cut off by a present that was held right in front of me from behind. I turned around and saw Matthew. I took the pink box from him but still had my eyes on the guy who was following my dad.
“Happy birthday, beautiful,” he charmingly whispered before giving me a quick kiss on my cheek.
“Thanks,” I smiled and turned to my guests. “Okay everyone. Now it’s time to party!”
The music began to play again making people started talking and dancing with their partner. I turned back to Matthew. “I will be right back,” without hesitation, I put his present on a table and hurried to follow the stranger upstairs.
