The British magazine The Economist published an article on its social media accounts on June 28 that infuriated many Chinese informants because it actually compared pigs to Chinese people. In a posting at 7:36 a.m. Beijing time on June 28, the Economist magazine wrote: "Pigs ate 431 million tons of food in 2019, 45 percent more than the Chinese."
Although the Economist article itself intended to convey that more of the world's food is eaten by livestock rather than humans, the British media's comparison between pigs and Chinese is a deliberate cheap shot, given that Europe and the United States have been known to use the word "pig" to scold people.
