I stepped hesitantly towards the door, when suddenly—

Man

"Is anyone there? Please, help! My mother's fallen! She's unconscious!"

The man's voice sounded desperate and frightened, and I caught my breath.

(Oh no! I have to do something!)

Float

"I'm coming, wait just—ahhh!"

As soon as I unlocked the door, the man grabbed me, shoving me back into the house.

Man

"Where's the box?"

He was holding a knife in his other hand, and I shivered.

(You're no ordinary thief! You're a spy!)

Float

"What are you talking about?"

Man

"Don't play dumb with me! Do you value your life?"

The man stalked forward, the tip of the knife aimed at my throat.

Giles

"Drop your weapon."

(What?!)

A sharp voice echoed loudly through the room.

A moment later Giles moved, almost too swift to see, his sword coming up against the man's throat.

"Giles! I thought you left!"

Giles

"I heard a sound in the garden, so I went out the back way.

Giles

"I didn't expect him to come in the front."

Giles was glaring at the man, his eyes colder than I'd ever seen them.

His voice was low and restrained as he said,

"I thought I told you to drop your weapon."

Man

"Shut up. My life means nothing to me.

Man

"Even if you slit my throat, I'll stab her as I die."

Giles fell silent, but I could see the emotions playing out across his face.

His eyes moved to meet mine, just for a moment.

Then he slowly lowered his sword again.

(Giles—

(Dammit, I wish there was something I could do!)

Man

"Thanks for taking care of my friends earlier. Now where's the box?"

Giles

"So you're a spy from the east.

Giles

"That box doesn't have information in it.

Giles

"It contains a jewel stolen from the royal family of this country."

Man

"What?! Are you telling me I did all this for nothing?"

The man scowled, but then an ugly smile crossed his face.

Man

"Well, I've come this far, I'm not going home empty-handed."

(No—!)

The man grabbed my arm, pulling me into his grasp and pressing the knife firmly against my throat.

Man

"Instead of the box, I want you to give me whatever info you've got.

Man

"Something useful about your country in the west."

(That's not fair!)

I remembered how Giles had told me it was his job to protect information about his country.

(Giles, no—you can't!)

I stared at him with wide eyes, trying to signal to him, but he was glaring at the man.

Giles

"And if I give you this information, you'll let her go?"

Man

"Yeah. I promise."

Giles

"Very well."

(Giles, that's your job! You can't—)

I watched in horror as Giles crossed the room, unlocking a drawer in his desk.

He pulled out a document with the seal of his country on it, and placed it on the table.

Man

"I recognize that document. That'll come in handy."

The man let go of me and grabbed the document, pocketing it immediately.

Giles

" Float"

Giles pulled me towards him, wrapping me safely in his embrace.

Man

"Never expected you to give up info like this for a woman. Some spy you are."

The man laughed loudly as he turned and left.

(You saved me, but—)

All the tension seemed to flow out of me all at once, and I collapsed into his arms.

Float

"Giles, I'm so sorry!"

I buried my face in his chest, too ashamed to look him in the eye.

Float

"It's all my fault he stole your country's secrets—"

Giles cupped my cheek with his hand, cutting me off mid-sentence.

Giles

"It's okay."

(Are you serious?)

I lifted my head in disbelief, only to find Giles gazing at me fondly.

Giles

"When I'm with you, I am neither spy nor judge.

Giles

"I am simply a man who loves you."

My heart skipped a beat and then set off at a gallop.

I stared up at him, open-mouthed, and he smiled gently.

Giles

"Besides, my friends are watching the house. They'll retrieve that document from the man in short order."

Float

"So—the information is safe, then?"

Giles

"Yes. So please, stop worrying."

(Oh, thank goodness!)

I breathed a sigh of relief, and Giles stroked my cheek.

Giles

"But even if the information really had been stolen, I would not regret it.

Giles

"There is nothing more precious to me than you."

Float

"I—"

I'd never expected him to say anything like that, and I barely knew how to react.

His expression turned serious as he went on.

Giles

"At first I felt it was my duty to watch over you, because your parents had asked me to.

Giles

"But somewhere along the way I realized I just wanted to be with you.

"I realized I'd fallen in love with you."

"Giles..."

I was suddenly so happy that my eyes filled with tears.

I barely felt able to speak, but somehow I found the words I most needed to say.

My heartbeat was roaring in my ears as I stared into his eyes.

After a moment he spoke, his voice pained.

Giles

"Are you sure?

Giles

"I'm a spy, and—that's not going to change."

Float

"I don't care. I don't care if you're a spy, or a judge, or anything else.

Float

"I love you, Giles, just as the man you are."

I smiled up at him, and reached down to remove the key from around my neck.

Float

"I wanted to give this to you, all this time.

Float

"You told me you'll never betray me again, and—I believe you. I'll always believe you."

(I know I'm making the right decision.

(The man I love is a man I can trust.)

Giles accepted the key from me, gripping it tightly in his hand.

Giles

"I really am no match for you."

Float

"You're not?"

Giles

"Your heart is so pure and true, and being with you makes me want to be honest and open as well.

Giles

"You've reminded me of a way of life that I'd long since forgotten was even possible."

Giles tucked the key in his pocket, and gently caught hold of my upper arms.

He leaned closer, his lips pressing softly against mine.

I closed my eyes, my heart still hammering.

It was a barely-there kiss, over all too soon, but it filled me with joy.

He kissed me again, longer this time, and then again.

"Giles..."

Warmth flooded through me, and I whispered his name between kisses.

He wrapped his arms tightly around me, pulling me closer still.

(Oh, Giles—)

His body was warm and strong against mine, and I could hear his racing heartbeat.

He turned his head slightly, his warm lips brushing against my ear.

Giles

"I promise I will stay by your side, protecting you.

Giles

"So will you stay with me, forever?"
