Watermelons are most popular during summer, especially since this fruit is one of the heat-loving plants. If you would like to grow watermelons in your garden, here are the steps.

Choose and prepare the planting area

The watermelon seeds should be planted in an area of your garden that gets sufficient sunlight and air. However, this area should not be exposed to strong cold winds that are not good for the watermelon plants.

Prepare the soil by mixing organic matter into it. The soil should be able to trap enoigj moisture for the plants. Ideally, the pH of the soil should be neutral, although the watermelons can still grow in a slightly acidic environment (pH 5.5).

Prepare the seeds

Based on the type of weather conditions in your area and on the type of watermelon that you would like to harvest, decide on the watermelon varieties that you would like to plant. If you want to use seedlings, plant them three weeks after the winter or when the temperature is already at 60 ° F. On the other хэнд you may use seeds if your area's warm season is enough to allow the plants to grow. Sowing the seeds directly into the soil is better for the watermelons than transplanting.

Planting the seeds

Take the hardened-off seedlings and plant them at the same depth as they were growing in their former pots. If you are using seeds, plant them in 1-inch deep hills. Water the plants.

Make sure that there is sufficient space between the plants. A distance of 3-13 feet will be enough depending on the watermelon variety.

Protecting the plants

Place an organic mulch around the stems of the plants. The mulch will trap moisture, prevent the growth of weeds and keep the plants clean. Another option is to use a plastic mulch, which is good in trapping heat especially if you live in a cold environment.

The plants should be covered with row covers that also help trap the heat. An inch of water should be given to the plants every week.

Once the watermelon flowers start to bloom, remove the covers so that the insects may pollinate the flowers. Every three weeks, apply compost tea to the soil to make the plants healthier.

Harvesting the ripe watermelons

About 35 days after the plants bloomed, most watermelons will be ready for harvest.

Although watermelons are usually associated with summer, you can still grow watermelons even if you live in a cool region. Just choose a variety that takes less time to grow and protect the plant from extreme cold conditions.
