    00 :: Cheshire

"Little Alice fell down the hole,
    bumped her head
    and bruised her soul."
    -Unknown

       “Cheshire…”
I rotated my head towards the direction of where the sound was coming from.
A giggle from the same feminine voice surrounded me as soon as I turned and saw nothing but particles of dust floating under the streetlights. Feeling annoyed, I chased the voice around but it kept ending up the exact same way: no one was there, not even a single hint of life.
Similar to how fireflies are attracted to flames, I tried to trail the mysterious damsel like a madman.  A sane part of me wondered why I was trying so desperately to uncover the identity of a complete stranger; but another, more influential part of my heart, for some reason, was filled with so much desire of seeing her face.
And of course, she continued to disappear just seconds after her soothing voice had reached my ears. All I could see was a trace of her shadow gliding gracefully under the pale moonlight, and her pleasant fragrance lingering in the air she was at moments ago.
A high-pitched chuckle echoed back from the lonely road when a smart idea hit me. I began to draw the owner of the girlish voice into a small alley. She followed me as expected; but then the tides turned, when I suddenly swivel to face the opposite direction and lunged straight forward. A sudden gasp evaporated into the air as a slim figure got entrapped in my embrace.
Shades of differently coloured lights began to swirl around me at the exact moment I caught a glimpse of her huge sapphire eyes and golden hair. The bright rays submerged my whole body, piercing my insides as they send signals of extreme pain to my brain. My heartbeat paced up uncontrollably when a faceless, devilish shadow appeared in my vision. Its nightmarish fingers stretching to an inhuman length, with the tip of its long, sharp claws aiming at my left chest, a few inches above the furiously beating muscle stored inside.
The only thought in my head at that moment was that I was going to die.
But then, the brightest light I have ever seen eradicated everything, including the blonde-haired maiden. My eyes which were temporary blinded by the sudden change screamed with discomfort. A swoop of warm wind was the only thing I could feel caressing my skin. My body somehow was certain that I was transported to another destination as soon as the breezed stopped, and with the warmer than it was previously air confirming my hypothesis, I began to move slightly.  I felt my trembling hands rest on something cold shortly before a surprised, quick breath escaped my lungs, for my gaze had finally adjusted to the new surroundings.
The dazzling atmosphere around me was painted with nothing but the purest white ,   the colour so tint-less to the point that even the finest artist could never fathom. I felt my pupils widening in a half confused, half amazed manner as I continue to inspect the breathtaking scene.    ‘This is surely what they call heaven, I must have died.’ was what I had in mind when I carefully stood up, resulting in the discovery that the floor, or whatever I’m stepping on, was quite steady; but I still did not dare to take leaps.
This place is no doubt cautiously constructed; perhaps a masterpiece by god himself, judging from the unearthly beauty it embodies. I continue to walk towards the seemingly-never-ending path, investigating each and every single carefully crafted marble statue appearing along the way.
And all of them were, of course, made from the finest white material.
The marble sculptures were the only non-background component I could see from my peripheral view. Some of them resembled characters I know or have heard of: Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, Cinderella and all those protagonists from famous fairytales. I was certain that all of my young patients would love to take my place. The ceaseless pale path still had no visible end no matter how many steps I had walked. It is part of the reason why the eye-blinding light annoyed me; for everything was too pure, too bright, and too white.
Just when I was about to throw a tantrum, a flip of golden hair popped into my vision. The first sight of something coloured made my body race uncontrollably, I ran towards the string of blonde as if my life had depended on it. A person! My brain shouted excitedly when it realised that whatever I just saw resembled a mortal being. The shadow of the human I was chasing suddenly halted to an abrupt stop, resulting in me pausing instinctively too. Her darkened shadow swayed a bit, as if she was unsure about whether to turn around or not.
But when she finally did, my heart froze.
Those blue eyes I have caught a glimpse of earlier shone brightly under the gleaming atmosphere, they were slowly arching up into a crescent shape when her lips began to form a smile. Her dainty face which complimented her long, curly golden hair and ivory skin perfectly was fixating at me.
She was, undoubtedly, the most beautiful creature I have ever laid eyes on.

        “I’m sorry.”
The same high-pitched voice uttered sincerely. I tilted my head in confusion: I didn’t even know her name, so how could she possibly owe me an apology? My mind was clouded with questions when a swift burst of an unknown burnt smell glided through my nostrils. My instinct told me to run far, faraway from here, but my heart didn’t.
So I stayed. I stayed and stared at her magnificent smile.
       “I died.”
That was when all the memories between her and me came back.
How I first met her in a lover’s paradise. How her bright laugh ringed in the air as she allows me to play with those long, blonde strands of hair. How I thought of her every single day and night. How I first kissed her under the shadow of an apple tree.
I extended both of my arms, trying to reach the girl in front of me. The flashes of remembrance were still  lingering in my head. My heart swayed with joy just when I was about to touch those delicate hands.  But it was all too late.
For she was suddenly engulfed in a bright fire.
The flames devoured her greedily, making its way onto every inch of her body. It swayed and imitated her movement like it was embracing her. Though the blaze magically spared her breathtaking blue eyes, as if there were an invisible barrier surrounding those clear sapphire pupils.
Her body was not so lucky.
No different from the way candles melt when lit, layer after layer of her skin were detaching themselves from her frame. Congealed blood and burnt pieces of human flesh were all over the once pure white scenery. Vanquishing the sound of fire destructing every form of life it touches was her high-pitched scream, filled with so much agony one could not possibly imagine. Whatever was left of her foot were pacing around faster and faster, it would seem like she was dancing, if only she wasn’t covered in fire.
Those clear blue eyes were still wide open, sparkling under the snow-white sky.
I still remember how I screamed her name at the top of my lungs.

        “Alice!”
