"Shinji, this is your classroom. You are in my class,” I smiled, doing my best to make him feel at home here. He did not reply.
"Where do you want to sit? Please feel free to choose. "I smiled wider than before. His lips did not move. The room fell silent again. It was as if the female students were waiting to see if he would sit next to one of them.
Then Shinji sat down at the empty seat next to me without saying anything. Between his table and mine, there was a small alley students could walk through. I understood. He really needed guidance as a new student, and since he chose to sit near me, I would do my best to assist him as a host.
The science teacher came into the room a moment later, and the first period started. The teacher asked us questions from time to time during class, and when he asked Shinji, I was surprised that though he was new, he answered very well. His answers were short, but they were clear and concise. Everyone couldn’t help looking at him in awe. He probably studied very well. It was possible that this year he would get a higher score than me, the student who always got the highest score in the class.
When it was time for the lunch break, I walked with Shinji to the cafeteria amidst the girls’ envious eyes. I felt nervous. Every pair of eyes seemed to admire and adore him. Nevertheless, no one else dared to say hello to him or speak to him, probably because the teacher assigned me to do so.
I spoke continuously to him like I did in the morning, trying to be a good class president without any flaws. I told him everything about the school; rules, names of the teachers, friends' names, good restaurants in the school, and even the signature menus they provided. I ordered many delicious dishes for him, too.
"Why won’t you eat?" I asked Shinji when I saw him ignoring the food and just blankly staring at his plate. “This is tasty, you can trust me. Are you not hungry or not feeling well?” I said. Silence.
"Being a new student who just moved in probably makes you nervous. But you should eat something, if you don't you might get sick." I suggested
"Don’t worry," Shinji answered briefly.
“What?” I asked.
"Eat, Yuka," he said.
That day, he let me eat lunch alone. He just sat on the opposite side without touching any food at all.
But would Shinji be ok? Would he be hungry? I pondered. In the afternoon class, I could do nothing else but look at him with questions in my mind as his gorgeous face looked at the whiteboard. His long, graceful fingers took notes. His handwriting was beautiful and neat, which was the opposite of my messy and childish handwriting. It would be great if I had beautiful handwriting too!
"Do you want to have dinner, Shinji? You haven't eaten since noon," I worriedly asked at the end of the day. We had just walked out of the school building together, “I know many good restaurants around here, what do you want to eat? Are you hungry yet?” I continued.
His striking eyes looked at my face for a moment. When looking at him carefully, I saw that his eyes had a very interesting color. It was a deep reddish-brown. To me, they looked like the twilight sky, the time of day that wasn’t just fascinating but also peculiar, mysterious and enchanting. It was strange that his eyes looked more appealing in the evening compared to when I first saw him in the morning. But why was that? I wondered. I had no idea.
"Yes," he replied to my question.
He was ready to eat, after all. I was so relieved!
"But I want to choose the restaurant myself," he added.
