    Der Ritter und Der Tod

Chapter 1: Go and Find Him

“How long do we have to wait? I’m hungry.” Says Lucy, one of my pals, a cheerful but easily annoyed girl.

She whines a little then goes back to her book.

The minute hand just hits the 6 of the clock while the hour hand stops at 8.

“It’s half past 8 now, he should be here soon.”

    I answered.

“His tardiness is always on point, huh?”

“Well, considering that man a night owl, he’s not an early bird.”

“But we have set the time, and it’s eight.” She stressed. “Being a night owl is not such a good excuse, isn’t it?”

    She’s right.

I shrug my shoulders and look away.

    .

    .

    .

Not so soon, a quarter after the conversation with her, Alex, that man has finally arrived.

“Guys! My bad, sorry. The thing in my house just..”

“Yeah, what is it this time? Dishwasher? Nah you used that last time. Heater? You bought that last month when we were out shopping.”

“Hu..!” I hold my laugh in. How can this girl be so savage?

“Come on! Lucy, I speak the truth this time!”

    “As always.”

    “You! I will not to—“

“Stop it, you guys. We are in front of a church.”

“I’m not even Christian.” Oh, I almost forget, Alex is an atheist.

“And I am not a child, still I befriend you.”

I wasn’t expecting Lucy to say such a mean thing, in such a cute way?

    “Guys, stop it or else.”

Those two groans then follow me inside. As I walk in, I can feel the presence of both God and the Lord himself in this place.

“Lady Bellavier, look at this picture, please.”

“Stop calling me that, I am not.”

    “Blah blah blah... Look, there.”

She tilts my chin up and cups my cheek, moves my head in the direction she pointed for me earlier.

“I thought you will kiss me.”

“I would if this place is not a church otherwise we have to marry.”

    “What a flirty you are.”

    “You started.”

    “Hmm..”

She made me look up to the biggest painting in this church. It is such a beautiful yet sad painting.

The picture shows the great knight dressed in white armor with a reputedly incredible yet crooked sword, holding? No, stabbing, right down in the middle, through his brave heart.

    Tears begin to fall...

“Bell? Bell! Oh my. Are you okay??”

    “Ahhh yeah”

    “Yeah... um... I’m fine.”

    “Yeah, I’ll be right back.”

I walk away from those two, I just can’t. I don’t know why tears are falling down my face...but if there is one thing that I know, it is that I felt it, the picture, I felt it.

The picture somehow moved. It moved when I looked at it.

The picture is alive? I’ve heard a lot of that saying. But as I looked in his eyes, I saw it all. The scenes, the war, the knight, and the saint.

    .

    .

    .

“Hey, you good?” I turned as I heard the voice of a man behind me.

“Alex, yeah I’m good. Don’t worry.”

    “You saw it moving again?”

“What? no, it was just... a very sad painting? So I cried.”

    “Bad liar as always.”

    “Hey!”

“As an atheist, I do not believe in God but that picture is..”

“It has nothing to do with God.”

    “But you know, the hilt?”

“What? You read imaginary articles I wrote again??”

“You stated in there that it’s real!”

“Listen, those are used to lure a child.”

    “My heart breaks.”

    “Yup, sorry for the truth.”

“But, here me out, if it’s not true then why the hell is it in the church?”

    “Beautiful? As others.”

“You are the worst. The person who wrote about God is agnostic herself.”

“I am not agnostic, I believe in God.”

“But you doubt him. You can believe in God while doubting whether God exists or not.”

    “So tired talking to you.”

    “Meh, me too.”

Alex is actually an atheist, as I told you, he neither believes in God, any God, nor the doctrines. It is understandable, he prayed but never the answer is yet to come. Some will say, it takes time, but when the gun is being held to the head, time means nothing.

    Literally nothing

    .

    .

    .

I walk back with Alex, seeing Lucy whose face is now filled with worries.

“Are you okay now Bell?” She rushes to me, shakes my shoulder intensely.

“Since first! Don’t worry Lucy. By the way, thank you for your concern.”

A smile pops up on her face, I guess she’s fine now. Lucy is an overprotective kind of person, especially when it is someone with whom she’s close.

“Does the picture have a name?” I ask calmly.

“The picture’s name?” Alex questions me back.

“Yeah but also the name of the knight.”

“The Knight and his sword, it says here.”

“Hmm... his sword? The one stabbed through his heart here?”

“I do not know.” Alex shrugs his shoulder.

“Bell, here, the name.” Lucy pulls me by my sleeve and points to the very bottom of the painting.

    “Xa...what?”

I can’t even read! What is the next letter? The text here is so dulled as it was being washed-out.

“That’s Xanxus, the Great Knight from the Noble House of Sir Timoteo, the Nobel Lord of East part of the old town, Marianne”

    “Xanxus? That’s a good nam—“

“Oh my, I am so sorry father.”

I almost curl up into a ball as the one who answered my silly question is the priest of this church, Father Thomas.

“You want to know about this bravest knight?”

“Father I... I don’t want to bother you. So, you don’t have to waste your time with me...”

“Time...I have a lot of that, giving you at least 2-3 hours wouldn’t be a problem for me.”

    “If you insist, Father.”

“Follow me, Alex and Lucy, as well.”

“Phew, I thought I’d be left behind.”

“Lucy!/Lucy!!” I and Alex burst out her name.

    “What?? Well, I—“

“Stop talking Lucy and I’ll buy you books.” Alex sure knows how to stop her.

“Well, sure.” Then she walks ahead of us.

We walk after her, with giggles as a background sound.

    .

    .

    .

We go down the hidden stairs at the back of this church.

“This spiral staircase creeps me out.” Says Lucy

“Is it? Isn’t it like a medieval castle or something?”

“What? No! Medieval things might be old but never this creepy!”

    “....”

“How much deeper will we go down father, I can’t take it anymore. It’s so narrow here.” Alex started to feel uncomfortable now.

Not gonna lie but I feel quite uncomfortable too.

“A bit more, hold on my children.”

With a couple of steps, we reach the end of the staircase. It is unbelievable for a church to have such a place like this underneath. The floor is covered with grass, neatly trimmed.

    Neatly trimmed?

“Looks like this place is being extremely cared for, Father?”

    Father smiles, a sly smile...

    “You know something, don’t you?”

“Alex, Lucy, my dear please wait here. Bell, could you follow me please.”

Alex and Lucy turn to each other, I also turn to them. We were brought down the stairs, but there is another room beside? And Father wanted me to follow him, only me?

Alex tilts his head up as a sign telling me to go in. Lucy looks a bit worried but still didn’t resist Father’s order.

    .

    .

    .

We walk into the old and broken room. Argh! The smell, it’s flesh? Rusty flesh? What?

“Sorry for the unpleasant smell. Come closer, my child.”

I follow his voice, he opens the tall yet shallow wardrobe. Old kinds of clothes are stacked inside. He holds the hangers in the middle then separates all the clothes to each side.

This better not be what I thought...

Nar— no, no, and no. That will be too ridiculous! A fairy tale story? No way

“Father, why did you bring me here?”

    “See what I see..”

“Father I do not understand, I know that I and my friends come here every Sunday but this is beyond what we usually do and...”

    “My dear....”

Father whispers something to my ear...

“Go find him, go find Xanxus”

My back is pushed, pushed to the wall of that wardrobe.

    “Fathe——“

    “What the hell!”

    .

    .

    .

My wrist got pulled by someone or something I can’t see.

    “No f**king way!”

I, Bellavier, was being pushed to the wall of the wardrobe, no I’m not dead yet. The wall magically disappeared! And now I got dragged by someone or something that I can’t even see! It’s all blur, no vision can be seen by my eyes.

    “Stop!! You idiot! It hurts!”

“We can’t, they will see us.”

“Who the f**k will see us? And what the f**k is all of this????”

“Shut your pretty mouth right now or else I will cut your throat.”

    “Huh?!”

Who the f**k is this fiercely talking man?? Did he come from the wardrobe??

“Hey! Where did you take me from? Is it the wardr—“

    “Lady... shut your mouth.”

    .

    .

    .

    “.....”

This man is a real deal.

    .

    .

    .

    “....”

    I would keep talking...

    .

    .

    .

If the Sica is not on my throat...

    .

    .

    .

    What the f**k Father?!!!!!
