Chapter 1: Alzheimer’s disease
Charlotte Wiggins— 66-year-old woman — was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease she inherited from her mother. She had been under Dr. Morgan Sonnabend’s treatment for 5 years. Yet, she still suffered from the disease. She had no-one else save Cherloyde— her only daughter. To her, Cherloyde was her world. She was her days, her months, her minutes, her seconds and everything. Even if she was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, she could recognize Cherloyd, still.
Her husband Patterson Wiggins died in a car accident many years ago. After his death, she seemed to think her life had been completely painted with white hue— it became blank indeed. Initially, she hardly talked that her words could be counted. She packed her world into her bedroom, spending her time gazing up at the ceiling of her messy room all day long as though her beloved husband was on the ceiling. From time to time, she mentally prayed for her husband’s return though it was impossible to happen. Then, she began to forget her ID number, her tasks and every name of people she knew. She even forgot her husband’s name; however, Cherloyd’s was her exception.
Realizing that her mother’s symptoms, Cherloyd sent her to a hospital for treatment for a while, and when she got better, she took her back home and always reminded her to take her medicines according to Dr. Morgan’s recommendation. Every day, she had to show her mother some albums of photos which contained photos of people she knew to be her memory aid, and that took a very long time for her to recognize each person’s name. Every retrieved name always drew smiles on their faces.
A few years later, Charlotte could retrieve most of her memory—just most of it— plus she talked more often than she used to do. Nevertheless, she found it difficult for her do the tasks she had to do even though she listed them on her old cork board. She always forgot to look at the list. It seemed to take a very long time for her to defeat Alzheimer’s disease.
However, Alzheimer’s disease couldn’t thwart her attention to move on. She kept running her café which was open on weekdays. Initially, only a few of customers came to her café owing to the fact that they thought that her café had ceased permanently because of her long absence to receive her treatment in the hospital.
