ลำดับตอนที่ #13 : Writing_Long Essay_Surveillance-Security
Surveillance—Security
There is no secret in the world. However, is there complete privacy? Not longer than a few decades has surveillance, the act of carefully keeping tabs on someone, been brought to be a topic for discussion. Surveillance contributes to promoting overall security. Meanwhile, mass surveillance is considered a breach in individual’s privacy. Nevertheless, despite the belief that it causes mistrust arising in the society, that it violates right, or that it is waste of resources, surveillance system indeed raises the degree of security and strengthens social peace and order.
First, surveillance has its contribution in public safety. Being away of being watched, the person who tends to commit crime may take a second thought before committing crime as he is aware that he is bound by the legal system. In other words, knowing about being kept tabs on is crime-deterrent. Additionally, the person may also feel afraid that his attempt may not be successful since the police may be able to trace his location and apprehend him. Lastly, most people, especially those who care about reputation, will be cautious of their wrongdoing as their friends or relative will see them. Thus, surveillance system helps hinder crime activities, because it binds people to legal system as well as social sanction once they are exposed by the prevalent surveillance system. As the crime rate, especially those affected several people, such as terrorism or robbery, is toppled down, peace and order in the society is achieved.
Although surveillance is believed to develop mistrust in the society and infringe inherent right to privacy, it is not actually like what it is seen. Firstly, surveillance does not create mistrust. On the contrary, it even eliminates mistrust, because this system provides people in the society with security and ensures that most of other people will also not commit crime due to the said reason. In other words, mistrust in others is lessened by the increased peace and order, a result of higher public security. Moreover, surveillance system keeps track of only people in the public space, which has never entitled people complete privacy anyway. Thus, no right to privacy will be violated even if this system is set in place.
Although surveillance requires a lot of resources and high investment, it reduces the risk and the vulnerability of the society to the damage from unexpected incidents which could be even more costly. Surveillance system does not require enormous amount of funding but also advanced technology, and cooperation with government authorities and officers. However, if there is no surveillance system, crime tends to happen more. Thus, the society will be vulnerable to crime actions, meaning that fear and loss of money will threaten the society. Crime does not only pose a threat on the loss of money, but also deteriorate social confidence and pose fear into the society. The business investment and activities will also be lessened as a result. Therefore, the economic and social damage of crime is larger than the economical cost of surveillance system.
Conclusively, surveillance plays a vital role in promoting public security and social peace and it is also economically worthy, without bursting mistrust or violating people’s privacy. Although it makes people feel that their privacy is compromised especially in public, it reduces citizen’s risk of being harmed. Both privacy and security are for sure fundamental bases of life; one should still bear in mind that privacy is only a psychological fulfillment, while safety is a physical demand.
