ลำดับตอนที่ #21 : Present Continuous Tense

We make the Present Continuous with [auxiliary verb BE] + [MAIN VERB].

The main verb is the infinitive without 'to' plus '-ing':

• to work > working

subject	auxiliary verb BE	main verb -ing	object etc
I	am	speaking	to you.
You	are	reading	this.
She	is	staying	in London.
We	are	not playing	football.
Are	they	waiting	for John?

Look at these examples:

The pages are turning.	The candle is burning.	The numbers are spinning.

หลักการใช้

1. ใช้แสดงเหตุการณ์หรือการกระทำที่กำลังเกิดขึ้นอยู่ในขณะนั้น โดยมักจะมีคำบอกเวลา (adverb of time) ได้แก่ now, just now, right now, at present, at this moment, at the moment, today, still

    Alex is listening to the radio right now.

    You are studying English at present.

    They are wearing school uniform today.

2. ใช้แสดงเหตุการณ์หรือการกระทำที่เกิดขึ้นในระยะยาว ไม่จำเป็นต้องกำลังเกิดจริงๆ ในขณะที่พูด ปกติจะมีเวลากำกับไว้ด้วย เช่น this week, this year

    Mawin is working for an engineering  company.

    We are studying   English One this term.

3. ใช้แทน  future tense เพื่อแสดงว่าการกระทำนั้นจะเกิดขึ้นในอนาคตอันใกล้ และเชือว่าจะเกิดขึ้นแน่นอน มักเป็นกริยาที่เกี่ยวกับการเคลื่อนไหว และจะมีเวลากำกับไว้

    The Browns are coming to dinner this evening.

    He is leaving for London on Friday.

4. ประโยคที่ขึ้นต้นด้วยเครื่องหมายอัศเจรีย์ (ประโยคอุทาน)

    Look! The train is coming.

    Be quiet! The teacher is teaching.

5. ถ้า Present Continuous เชื่อมด้วย and เราจะตัดกริยาช่วยตัวหลังออก

   He is smoking a cigar and reading the newspaper.

6. กริยา listen, look, watch, smell จงใจใช้แบบ continuous ได้

    Don't disturb him now; he is listening to a radio.

    Why are you looking at that car?

How do we spell the Present Continuous?

Just add -ing to the base verb:

work

working

play

playing

assist

assisting

see

seeing

be

being

If the base verb ends in consonant + vowel + consonant, double the last letter:

S	t	o	p
	consonant	vowel	consonant

(vowels = a, e, i, o, u)

stop

stopping

run

running

begin

beginning

Note that this exception does not apply when the last syllable of the base verb is not stressed:

open

opening

If the base verb ends in ie, change the ie to y:

lie

lying

die

dying

If the base verb ends in vowel + consonant + e, omit the e:

come

coming
