A new lovely couple, Jack and June, decided to have a road trip to Chiangmai together and Jack was the one who offered to drive all the way to the destination. It takes about a 9-hour drive to get there.

The wheels started moving around noon and everything was going out well. When they reached Lampang, two sides of the road were filled with beautiful scenery of sweeping green mountains and trees. As time passed on, the sky turned darker and the road became empty and silent. The only light illuminating the road was from their car.

At one point, after the long drive, they began to feel tired and sleepy. It was 11 pm already, so they decided to search for a hotel to get some rest. “Look! It’s a hotel sign right there.” June said, pointing a finger at the sign. Jack turned to look, “Should we rest there? It seemed like there were no other hotels around here.” June nodded and smiled.

A few minutes later, Jack pulled up to the hotel’s driveway. The hotel got scarier when they stepped closer. Behind the overgrown trees, the hotel was located there. Every gut and muscle of June’s body became unwound as she saw the hotel in front of her. She had some strange feelings about this hotel. “Why do I get a funny thought that we shouldn't come here?” She mumbled to herself.

After they collected their stuff, they walked into the hotel's main lobby.

“Hello. Anybody here?” Jack said, turning around to search for the receptionist.

“Sorry for waiting. How can I help you?”

A voice came out from nowhere. They turned to look back again at the front desk.

The receptionist was right there standing behind a big wooden desk.

“Can we get a room for one night?” June said.

“Okay, your room is 413, and here is your key,” The receptionist gave a cold smile and looked directly at June.

Jack pressed button number 4 to lift the elevator. Inside the elevator looked old and the light was broken. The monitor showed that the first and second floors had already passed.

“Ding…” The elevator slowly opened with an annoying noise of scratching. In front of them was a long hallway that was empty and they could not see anything but darkness. “Why is it open? It's only on the third floor.” June said. “Maybe it's broken. Don't worry about it.” Jack answered with a sleepy voice.

As they came inside room 413, June noticed a piece of old paper nailed on the first wall to the left of the entrance. It was a set of rules to stay in this hotel, it stated:

“Welcome to our hotel. We hope you enjoy your stay, but there are three rules that we ask you to follow for your safety. First, do not leave the room from 12:00 am to 6:00 am, if you are caught outside of the room, you are no longer considered one of our guests. Second, if you hear something like wheels followed by footsteps outside, that is our housekeeper. But if they stop at your door, and knock less than three times, DO NOT open it. Third, always keep the blinds closed. Many guests have reported someone looking into their rooms at night. If you still live here until the morning, we are happy for you and please give us a five-star rating on the service. Have a great night.

(Failure to follow the rules will result in worse consequences and we are not responsible for any injuries or trauma caused.)”

“Jack, what is this? Come here and read.” June said.

“It’s just general hotel rules. Let's go take a shower. I’m on my last legs.” Jack replied with a tired voice.

As they were laying in bed, June heard a knock on the door. She walked over to open the door, but no one was there. She returned to sleep after assuming that someone might have entered the wrong room.

Ten minutes later, there was a knock on the door again, but this time it wasn't like the last time. “GET OUT!”, the sound of a female voice shouting from the front door. Courageously, June walked towards the door and shouted back, “Who are you?!” Jack tried to convince June not to open it because he suspected the woman was a thief.

“Creak…” The door was gradually opening.

June slowly looked at her bloody face with her eyes popped out of the socket. Her clothes were also covered with blood.

“Arghhhhhhh” June screamed loudly as people in the entire building could hear her.

At that moment, she only thought that she had to get out of this room. Her consciousness started to slip. Suddenly, she ran to the balcony and jumped out…. Jack tried his hardest to approach her but was unable to do so. He looked down with hope and saw June lying in a pool of blood.

“Why did she jump?” He spoke to himself in his mind while he was crying in sorrow.

One hour later, the police arrived at the scene. It was found that one person died from falling from a height. They asked Jack why she jumped down, and he answered, “I saw her walk to open the door after a knock, but there was no one. Then she screamed loudly and jumped down.”

“Have you followed the rules of our hotel?” The staff asked in a trembling voice.

“What are the rules? I’m so tired that I haven't read it.” Jack asked.

“The second rule states that if someone knocks on your door less than three times, do not open it. I believe this was the cause of her death.” The staff said.

      “HOLY SH*T”
