Misleading Education: Should Thai Children forget Thai?

Language founds nation. Everyone should be fluent in his native language and be proud of it. Thousands of years ago, Thailand has not existed yet. Various ancient tribes and races were brought together by just one language. They founded the Kingdom of Thailand and have used Thai language since then. Having our own language means we never lose our independence and freedom to a foreign ruler.

Thailand, as the only country in Southeast Asia which has never been colonized, now faces a big educational problem about international schools, which teach the students Thai just 50 minutes a week, or do not teach Thai at all, so that the students can practice English perfectly. Raja Bandithaya Satharn, the Royal Organization of Thai language, became worried that Thai is unintentionally dying. English is the international language people use around the world, but is it correct to teach Thai children just English, and gradually forget Thai at the same time? Nowadays most children who study in international or bilingual schools cannot spell simple Thai words, not even pronounce the words correctly since Thai has different and more phonemes than English. Besides, teaching just English means implanting the children western culture and concepts since young, which are, without doubt, completely different from ours. These lead to communication problems, and more importantly, the loss of pride of being Thai among the scholars.

Language brings its culture. Seeing that the modernity usually comes from western countries, most Thai people, especially the youth, admire all western things. Doing something in Thai ways now looks old and boring. This view makes some children do everything like the westerners do without consideration. I, as one of the students in a normal Thai school, have seen many problems about the conflict between western and Thai culture. Some do not understand why they have to walk with their backs bending when passing the older, or kneel when speaking with an older who is sitting. These do not mean they are inferior. As human beings, we are equal, but we Thai are taught to be gentle and grateful to show respect to others.

Furthermore, international schools promote students to express their opinions deliberately, but sometimes it is considered aggressive and inappropriate, especially with women who are expected to be shy and neat. This contrast is quite a confusing problem. The best way is to adapt the suitable western concepts, but not to forget our own soul. What the use if we were not proud in who we are, and what we have done? Why think we are not good because we are different?

The charm of Thailand is the unique, and I, as a Thai, am always glad I was born in this country, not somewhere else. English is necessary in communication and business, yet there are no proper reasons for international schools to teach almost everything in English and lessen the importance of Thai.
