Gold Niello Screens with Scenes from Ramakien
These
are one of the nine valuable masterpieces exhibited which are created from pure
gold. The three screens were beautifully made on the Auspicious Occasions of
the 7th Cycle Birthday Anniversary of His Majesty the King in 2011, the 80th
Birthday Anniversary of Her Majesty the Queen in 2012, and the 5th Cycle
Birthday Anniversary of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn in
2012. 117 artisans from many different fields such as craving, metal embossing,
painting, etc., had created the screens with great perseverance for one year
and six months. All the screens are 90 centimeters in length. The centre screen
is 2.7 meter in height, while the other two screens are 2.45 meters. Their
grandeur is definitely not to be missed.
The
three screens stand in a line chronologically depicting the story of Ramakien,
the Thai version of Ramayana; hence, it is easy to follow the content as though
one is reading the verses. The first screen on the right features Sita’s
Abduction made of gilded carved silver, and painted on certain areas with gold.
Some parts of the silver niello are left exposed creating an extraordinary
sight. The screen portrays the story when Ravana abducted Sita from the royal
pavilion, and drove her with him in his chariot into the sky. He was blocked by
Sadayu the Great Bird who fought to help Sita. The demon therefore slipped
Sita’s ring from her finger and threw it at Sadayu, breaking one of his wings,
since Sadayu carelessly boasted:
“In all the Three Worlds, do not
think I would fear anyone or anything
Except the great lord Vishnu, the high King who
wields the Chakra,
And Shiva’s powerful ring which Sita is wearing on her
finger.”
Below
this lies the scene of Rama stalking the golden deer, leaving the royal
pavilion and thus letting Sita be kidnapped as described above. The golden deer
was actually Mareecha, Ravana’s uncle in his disguise so as to lure the two
princes out. This splendid screen shows a myriad of exotic plants making
viewers feel as if they are getting transported into the forest.
The
most important and notable screen is the second one in the middle, portraying
the Garden Scene. It is made of gilded embossed silver in the background to
help it stand out, and then decorated with gold and copper. This screen shows Ravana’s
royal procession and his troops arriving at the garden where Sita stayed in
Lanka. Ravana tried to court her in the magnificent grand palace,
to no avail; her heart was loyal to her husband Rama only. She condemned and
insulted the demon harshly:
“Then
she spat on the stick which represented Ravana and said,
Stop pleading me with these words now, you
despicable stick
I am the Supreme Mother of gods, to whom the
Three Worlds bow,
Not a low woman who would be happy with the
likes of you.”
The
third screen on the left features the Hunt of the Horse Upakarn and related
scenes. Here the niello artisans have shown their skills in embossing silver
then decorating with gold paint and silver niello for depth and dimension, making
the images most realistic. It tells the story of Sita and her little two sons, Luv
and Kusha, when they were banished from the city to stay in the woods with the
sage Valmiki. The two young princes played with their powerful arrows and
destroyed a big Ingyin tree, resulting in a great noise and earthquakes in
every direction. Rama feared it might be an omen that some mighty lords were
revolting against his kingdom. He released the horse Upakarn which represents
his throne to see if anyone would dare ride it, which would mean they announce
the revolt. The little princes caught the horse and rode it for fun. They also
tied Hanuman up, and challenged his lord by tattooing words on his face with
magic which reads:
“If it is not by your true
owner, however mighty it is, this rope cannot be cut;
Only the owner of this monkey can easily
unfasten it”.
After Hanuman recovered, the princes hit him
again and said,
“Get your clansmen here, vile monkey, we will
have a fight.”
These
gold niello screens deeply impress the viewers, not only with the precious
metals and their elaborate details made possible by exquisite craftsmanship,
but also with the fact that the artisans who symbolize the common people
created them, telling the high literature of the kingship: Ramakien. Similarly,
the power and prestige of the king is made possible by the common people
because no ruler can rule without support. This demonstrates the close and
dependent relationship between the royalties and the citizens, which is one of
the remarkable characteristics of the Thai society and culture.
