A Young Reaper

There was an ordinary girl named Josceline. She had turned fifteen in December. Josceline did not talk much. She was too shy to start a conversation with other people. Josceline always wore a pair of huge glasses and dressed up the same way as her mother. As she was walking down the hallway, other girls would laugh at her old-fashion dress.

Josceline was a passive person. She always did what she has been told whether she liked it or not. Her classmates always ordered her around. Even so she did not have the guts to say 'No' to them. This made her a target of social bullying.

In the evening, a bell rang as the classes were about to be over, and the students and teachers left the classroom. Josceline also left her classroom and headed to the library. On the way to the library, she saw a group of bad students who always bullied her. She walked as fast as she could, hoping they would not notice her.

“Hey! Josceline,” one of the girls called out to her.

Josceline turned around and faced with the three girls, Amy, Crystal, and Emily. The teacher had just warned them not to use marihuana a few minutes ago. If they got caught again, they would be expelled from the school. The girls were not in a very good mood right now, and they wanted to bully someone to make themselves feel better.

“What should we do with her?” Crystal said.

“I've got an idea,” Amy who was as thin as a skeleton said.

“Look at her glasses,” Crystal laughed as she was looking at Josceline.

“School's over. Why don't you come with us,” Amy grinned. The girls came closer to Josceline, close enough for her to smell a sweet odor of marihuana from them.

“But...” Josceline said under her breath as she was pushed by the girls.

The three girls took Josceline to the parking lot. Then they let Josceline sit in their car with them and drove to the closest gas station. They told her to buy a couple gallons of gasoline with her own money before driving back to school. Josceline just did what they said without questioning.

“Let's go to that classroom,” Amy said.

“Er...,” Josceline wanted to tell them that her dad would arrive any minute and she wanted to go home.

“Oh...shut up,” Emily pushed Josceline into the classroom and shut the door.

“Put the gallons on the floor!” Crystal ordered poor Josceline. So, she put the gallons of gasoline on the floor.

“I'll do it. I hate this damn place,” Emily grasped one of the gallons.

“No. Let Josceline do it,” Amy said with an evil smile on her face.

“Josceline, pour the gas on the floor,” Amy said.

“Ha?” Josceline thought there must be something wrong here.

“I said do it!” Amy yelled at her.

Josceline was so scared that she followed the order. She was afraid that the girls would beat her up or even worse. These girls always took her money and bullied her and that was more than enough. Josceline hoped that some teachers would come and saved her, but there was nobody in the area.

“Err...Can..I...go...now?” Josceline said after she finished the job, but the girls was not listening.

“I hate this damn place and the damn teachers,” Amy lit her lighter and threw it on the floor. Then they laughed as Josceline screamed with fear.

“Let's go and have a drink,” the girls left the classroom and shut the door behind them.

The flame from the lighter quickly ignited the gasoline on the floor. Josceline tried to put out the fire by using her jacket but the fire was too strong. Black smoke rose to the ceiling and filled the whole room. Josceline ran to the door, but the fire blocked the way. Josceline stepped back, the smoke got into her lungs and she began to cough. She tried to run to the window, but the black was too thick. She could not see anything. Josceline coughed harder and tried to breath. Then she fell down on the floor.

“Wake up!”

“Where am I?”

Josceline opened her eyes and saw a young man in front of her. He was dressed in black from head to toe and his hair covered half of his face. Josceline turned around and she could see nothing, but darkness around both of them.



“It's time. Follow me,” he said and turned around. Josceline quickly followed him. She had so many questions in her mind, but she did not have enough courage to ask the man in front of her.

“If you haven't realized yet, I'll tell you. You are dead, Josceline,” he said as he kept walking in the darkness.

“I beg your pardon?” Josceline was surprised.

“You and your dad died in the fire.”

Josceline stopped walking and tried to recall her memory. When she realized that she had actually died in that classroom, she began to cry.

“Why did daddy have to die too?” she sobbed.

“He tried to rescue you,” the man replied.

Josceline burst into tears. She felt like her heart was torn apart.

“Stop crying! We must go now,” the man ordered.

Josceline was unable to stop the teardrops flowing down her cheeks. The young man sighed. He put his left arm around her small waist and lifted her up. Then he flew forward as he knew where to go.

Suddenly, a bright white light appeared before them. He flew straight towards the light and the silhouette of a gigantic door appeared before them. The door was as big as a mountain and it had a picture of heaven on the right and a picture of hell on the left. Then the door slowly opened by itself.

“Prepare to enter the Court of Death,” he said.

The man and Josceline entered the room. Inside the room, there were many people dressed in dark uniforms sitting at the long tables. All of them were writing something in their books. They stopped writing and stared at Josceline when she walked past them.

Then the man stopped and whispered,

“Bow down before the Great Judge.”

“The soul of Josceline Taylor has arrived, my Lord.” The man bowed down and Josceline followed him. The men and women at the tables began to write something down again.

Josceline then turned her head up and saw the man sitting on a floating cloud. The size of the judge was a hundred times that of a normal man. He wore a white blindfold and his clothes were as red as blood. He was holding a golden sword in the left hand and a golden weighing scale in the right hand. He looked so powerful that he could possible destroy the whole world with his mighty power.

“Josceline Taylor!” the Great Judge said with the voice like thunder, and Josceline's body shook in fear.

“Ten lives were lost and twenty-three were wounded because of your foolishness. Your sin is frightfully heavy, indeed.”

After he finished his words, he waved his right hand and the golden scale flew to Josceline. She discovered that one side of the huge scale had a glowing feather on it.

“The holy feather represents the goodness of the human heart. If your soul appears to be lighter than the holy feather, you may go to heaven. If your soul is heavier, you shall be consumed by the hellish fire for eternity,” the Great Judge said.

“Go to the empty side of the scale, quick!” said the man in black.

Josceline climbed up to the empty scale. The huge scale began to move slowly as she stepped on it. Josceline sat there and waited for scale to come to rest as the whole room fell silence.

The scale then came to rest, and the weight of Josceline was exactly the same as the feather's.

“You are neither good nor evil, young lady” spoke the Great Judge as the golden scale flew back to him.

“You are a good person in nature, you could possibly go to heaven. However, the sin that you committed before you died has prevented you from going to heaven. You did not intend to commit a sin, but failing to refuse to commit a sin is also a sin,” he said.

“From this moment, you shall be a reaper. You must collect human souls and bring them to this place like that man beside you,” he commanded.

Josceline looked at him. She was surprised to know that he was a human just like her.

The Great Judge waved his sword. Then Josceline's clothes turned into a black reaper's costume and a strange tool appeared right in front of her.

“This is your scythe. You will use it to collect souls,” the Great Judge said.

Josceline grasped her scythe. It was cold and heavy.

“Scyther will guide you. Both of you may leave,” the Great Judge said.

Josceline and the man bowed. Then they left the court of Death.

Scyther took Josceline to the human world. Both of them were standing on the pavement. Josceline saw many people around her. She saw a group of children playing in a yard. At the corner there was a man walking with his Golden retriever. Then a red car ran past her and made a turn at the intersection. She was actually in the human world, the world that she came from.

“I have something to teach you,” Scyther said.

“When you see people with a black mark on their neck, use that scythe in your hand to cut at the mark and take their spirit. Then bring the spirit to the Court of Death. I hope you understand.”

“But how?”

“You'll understand, now go,” Scyther said before he disappeared.

Then Josceline headed to her house which was not very far from where she was. Josceline walked to the front door and went inside the house without opening the door.

“I could not believe that it has happened,” Josceline's mom said as her tears flowing down on her cheeks. She just came back from her husband and daughter's funeral and she still wore a black dress.

“It must be very hard for you, my dear,” said the old lady. Then she handed a handkerchief to her daughter and touched her shoulder.

“You must be strong, Courtney,” Josceline's grandfather said.

“I will, dad” Courtney sobbed.

Josceline went close to them, but none of them saw her. She wanted to hug them and comfort them so badly. However, the reaper like her could not touch humans. She watched her hand waving through their bodies and burst into tears.

Josceline stayed at her house until the night. Josceline's mother and her grandparents were about to go to bed. After they said goodnight to each other, Josceline followed her mom to her bedroom. Mother turned off the light, but she did not sleep. She lay on her bed and cried.

“What do you think you're doing?”

Scyther showed up in front of her and he was angry.

“I told you to go to work!”

“But...”

“I don't want an excuse! If you don't get any souls soon, you'll be in a big trouble!”

“I'm sorry,” Josceline tried not to make an eye contact with him because she was too scared.

“Go to the Methodist hospital in Fannin street. You can get some souls from there,” Scyther said before he disappeared.

Josceline looked at her crying mother for the last time and then flew out of the window by the bed.

It was almost midnight, but she did not feel tired at all. Her vision was surprisingly good and she could see everything clearly in the darkness. It did not take a long time to find Methodist hospital at all. The girl landed by the front door and walked inside the white building.

Josceline walked past the lobby and went upstairs. There were a few nurses walking in the hallway. Josceline then went inside one of the patient's rooms and she saw an old man sleeping on the bed. She did not see any black mark on his neck, so she went to another room. Josceline went into every room before going to the third floor.

On the third floor, she did not see anyone with a black mark on the neck. So, she went upstairs. She kept doing that until she reached the fifth floor.

She saw a white door, and the top of the door there was a sign said 'Operating theatre.' Many people sat in front of that room. Some of them were crying, some of them were praying. Then Josceline went inside.

In the operating theatre, there were four doctors trying to save a young man's life. The left side of his body was badly wounded and his face was ripped open from a major car accident. Josceline had seen operations on television before, but she had never seen a real one like this. She walked close to the poor man and saw a black mark circling around his neck. It was the mark that could never been seen by a human.

Josceline looked at the scythe in her hand and looked at the man.

She could not do it. Josceline had always done what she was told, but this time she could not. She could do anything, but killing a man.

As she was turning back, another reaper came inside the room and went straight to the poor man on the bed.



“No!!!”

Josceline screamed, but it was too late. The scythe in his hand sliced on the man's neck. In the blink of an eye, the translucent soul was in his hand.

“Sorry, you're too slow,” that reaper said to Josceline and he left the room.

“Get the defibrillator, quick!” one of the doctors ordered. Another doctor quickly placed the metal tool over the man's chest.

“One two go!”

An electric current flew into the man's body as an attempt was made to make his heart work again. His body jerked every time the current flew in. Josceline knew it was useless. His soul has already been taken.

Josceline left the room as fast as she could. She jumped out from the hospital's window. In the sky, Josceline closed her eyes and tried to forget everything that had happened that day.

One the next day, Josceline went around the town. She had seen many people with dead marks on them, but she pretended that she did not see. In the evening, she visited her mother to be with her for the whole night. On the next morning, her mom woke up and went to her workplace.

Suddenly, Scyther appeared in front of her and said,

“This is the last warning! If you don't get any souls by midnight, you'll be punished.”

Then Scyther left. Josceline knew that this time she would really be in big trouble. So, Josceline decided to go to Methodist hospital again.

Josceline entered a ward where patients were in coma. The whole room was quiet and five patients layon the beds. Some of them had masks covering their faces, some of them had a cable attached to their mouth or throat allowing them to breath.

Josceline looked at each patient, and she saw one of them had a black mark around her neck. Josceline walked toward her. That patient was about seventeen. This girl had been in coma for six years after she was diagnosed with diabetes and kidney failure. The table by her bed were full of gifts and tributes from her friends and family who hoped that someday she would wake up again.

Josceline leaned over the girl's body.

“I must do this! I don't want to go to Hell!”

She took a deep breath and raised her scythe up. The girl lay still lied on the bed. Josceline aimed at the black mark on her neck. This was her chance.

Josceline put her hands down. She stepped away from the girl. The girl was still alive and the black mark was still on her neck. Josceline finally left the room.

Josceline travelled to her mom's workplace. She watched her mom work at her desk, followed her to cafeteria, and listened to her talking with friends during the break. Josceline thought she would stay with mom until the last minute.

It was already nine o'clock at night, but mom had not finished her work. She kept working for about fifty minutes before she left her desk. Then Josceline followed her to the parking lot.

Both of them stopped at a light brown Volvo. As mother was trying to find her car key under the light from the lamp post, a man who had been hiding behind the car jumped at her and said

“Give me the car key!”

Josceline's mom was very frightened. She stared at the knife in the stranger's hand and was unable to move.

“I SAID GIVE ME THE DAMN KEY!” he shouted.

Suddenly, a black mark started to appear on mother's neck. It was like a black robe tying around her neck. Josceline screamed in fear. Her mother was going to die.

“You, bitch!”

The man swore as mom was running away from him.

Josceline rushed to the man. She had to stop him no matter what. She loved her mother so much and she did not want her to die. She took out the scythe and used it to cut the stranger's throat.

“AHHHH!!!”

Josceline was suddenly flung away from the man by a mysterious force. She rolled on the floor and felt pain all over her soul.

“Foolish little girl, are you trying to save this pathetic women?” An evil spirit appeared before Josceline.

This sprit had lived inside this man. It had consumed his soul and taken over his body. The evil spirit was the most terrifying creature that she had ever seen. It had a distorted head that resembled to the wolf and it had seven eyes. The lower part of its body attached to the back of the robber's head and was stretched as it move away from the man. The strong smell of blood and rotting flesh came from it's body. When it opened the mouth, Joseline could see sharp teeth inside.

“I am not afraid of you!” Her voice was shaking and her body was trembling when she said it.

Josceline stood up and faced the evil spirit. Then the evil spirit began to laugh. The sound of its laughing made her feel a shudder up her spine.

“How pathetic! I will kill you along with that women!” The evil spirit said as it began to attack Josceline.

While both of them were fighting with each other, Josceline's mom was caught by the stranger. She screamed as he punched at her stomach and took her handbag.

“Hey! you!”

A security guard rushed over to the stranger and punched him in the face. Then the man tried to stab the guard with his knife, but the guard dodged.

“Oh, no! That guy got a mark too!” Josceline said as she saw a dead mark on the guard.

“That's right! I will kill him too!” the evil spirit said before it bit at Josceline's shoulder. She screamed in pain and used the scythe stab at the evil spirit's back. It screamed like a wild dog and threw her away.

“You, little...!”

The evil spirit was furious and the blood dripped out from its wound. It then started to attack her again.

This time the evil spirit bit harder at her neck and made her unable to move. The scythe was flung on the floor and Josceline was ripped apart. The evil spirit laughed as it flew back to the stranger.

Josceline who had lost half of her body used her arms crawl to the scythe. She grasped the scythe and aimed at the back of evil spirit.

She used her last bit of energy throw the scythe at the evil spirit. The scythe flew to the evil spirit and sliced its head off. It screamed loudly and fell down on the ground. The man, who had been controlled by the spirit, jerked and suddenly fell down. Then the evil spirit turned into dust and was blown away by the wind.

“Ha...Ha... I win,” Josceline said.

She looked at her mother and the guard investigating the corpse of the stranger as the police car arrived. Josceline felt relief, the dead marks on their necks had disappeared.

“You moron! Why did you do this?”

Josceline turned her head up and saw Scyther standing in front of her. It was already midnight.

“Do you know what'll happen? You'll disappear because you saved humans.”

“It's ok as long as mamma's safe,” she said as her soul began to faint.

“You should have listened to me!”

“Good bye Scyther, it's very nice to meet you and sorry for all the troubles,” Josceline said her last words before her soul broke into millions pieces.

“Josceline!”

There was no longer Josceline's soul, only remains of it scattered as particles around the sky. The remaining of Josceline's soul were like white feathers that could never be seen by human eyes, including her beloved mother. She was no longer a reaper or a soul, but some particles floating around.

Then one of Josceline's remaining particles flew towards her mother and come to rest on her hair.

Suddenly, a strange woman appeared in front of Josceline's mother. She had long silverly hair that glowed like a star and six black wings. None of the people in that place noticed that she had come. For them, she was no different from the air around them.

The women with black wings picked up the particle on her mother's hair and put it in a cup. Then she started to gather all the remaining particles and put all of them in the same cup. After she collected the last piece of Josceline's soul, she then traveled back to the Spiritual world.

In the darkness of Spiritual world, the woman sealed the cup and blew on it. Then she placed the cup on the floor in front of her. Suddenly, the cup changed its shape, it grew bigger and bigger and became a single soul. The soul appeared to be Josceline. She looked very ill. Her clothes were torn and could barely cover her pale skin. Josceline had regained consciousness and faced the women.

“You are Josceline Taylor, aren't you?”

“Yes, ma'am,” she said with a soft voice. She felt so painful all over her soul and she could barely speak.

“I am the ruler of Spiritual world, and I am here to judge you.”

“Yes, ma'am.”

“You always did what you had been told when you were alive, but you did not when you were dead. You worked as a reaper, yet you have not collected any soul and dare to save two human. You do not deserve to be a reaper!”

Josceline closed her eyes, she knew what would happen.

“You shall be an angel.”

The ruler placed her hand on Josceline's head. Suddenly, a white beam came out from the ruler's hand and bathed Josceline. She was healed and was full of energy. A pair of white wings grew on her back, her ripped clothes turned into beautiful white dress, and a golden halo shone over her head.

“You have finally shown courage to follow to your heart, not an order. Furthermore, you risked your life to save the one you love. This merit outweighed your sin and made you become an angel”

“Thank you very much!” Josceline said as the tears of joy flowed down her rosy cheeks.

“Let the God bless you, Josceline. You may go to heaven.”

“Ma'am , there is one thing I want to do.”

“What is it?”

Josceline flew to her house. It was dark, but the light in the bedroom was still on. Josceline then entered the room through the window. She walked to her mother who was crying on her bed.

“Have a rest, mommy. It's been a long day.”

Josceline placed her little hand on her mother's forehead, and she suddenly fell asleep.

“I love you,” she said as she kissed her mom on her cheek.

“I must go now. Daddy's waiting for me,”

In that night, the mother saw Josceline in her dream. Her daughter had wings and wore a beautiful white dress.

Josceline looked at her mom for the last time before she slipped out of the window. Then she headed to heaven where her father was.
