It's that time of year, usually approached with the great excitement of new shoes and pencil cases. This year it's a different story. Never, in my own 20-year career, has there ever been such apprehension about the start of an academic year and what it may bring.

Here are our tips on how to approach this term with your child:

    Stability

As we approach the autumn term it is really important to give our children stability and a sense of normality. Of course things are very different in schools and it will take a few days for students to process the new normal. However, children are mostly very resilient and will adapt easily to the measures put in place by schools. If you think your child may not cope with the changes then it is really important that you speak to your child’s school and let them know. It’s much better for school’s to be able to plan and prepare for students who will find school difficult than to have a child become overwhelmed.

Children with SEND may be highly anxious and it’s a good idea to plan a few strategies for calming down before heading into school, such as mindfulness breathing, acknowledging feelings, drawing or encouraging them to take one day at a time. As adults, we have all had varying experiences over lockdown and this is true for children too.

    Make a plan

We have had many calls from worried parents about schools returning.

This is why we have developed ‘Plan B’. Plan B is a home-learning program where we work with your child’s school in order to deliver the same learning objectives that would be happening in the classroom, in live online lessons. registered tutors can create bespoke programs to suit your needs whether you have to experience short term isolation or longer term home educating.

Online lessons are still the surest way to stay safe and with all brighton tutor being experienced and resourceful educators, this remains an excellent option for learning.

    Team up

We have just released our new group pricing which many parents are already making good use of. Finding a friend to learn with not only reduces the cost for parents, it can drive progress forward by use of effective discussion too. (See Jon Hattie's impacts on learning- discussion comes out near the top every time!)

With everyone staying safe and in the comfort of their own homes, this is a good option for either weekly sessions or a 'Plan B' situation.

    Catch up

While we wait for new information on the Government's National Tuition Program for state maintained schools, many parents will want their children to catch up on any learning they have missed in the last few months ahead of any announcements. 1: 1 tuition with our talented teachers is perfect for this and not only can it drive learning forward, the relationships formed with private tutor can help with wellbeing too.
