    Byo's answers:

Q: Do you wear any cologne?
    A: I'm not interested...

Q: "I was in love with 2 teachers... I learned so much. It was heaven." When you wrote this, were you talking about doing ecchi things with them?
    A: Calm down!

Q: Can Nejireta Shiso be purchased in any CD shop in the country?
A: Can it? I only own 1 copy... If it can, I wanna buy more.

A: I only get my own favorite ramen from one shop, so I wouldn't miss it.

Q: What does the name of your band mean?
A: It's complicated. It took a LOT of thought. To put it simply, we want to make things happen by stabbing into --- with our lyrics and music. Like with a screw.

Q: How did you all meet?
A: We were brought together. I feel it was destiny that drew me to the other members.

Q: What is your band's concept?
    A: Nausea. Driving in screws.

Q: Did you play any other music or genres before you got into visual kei?
    A: I did. TOKIO!

Q: Do you design your own costumes, or do you have a designer?
A: No, we have a designer.

Q: What do you do in your free time?
    A: Smoke.

Q: You always look so cool it hurts. What can I do?
    A: Sorry... Forgive me.

Q: What was your favorite flavor (of candy?) again?
    A: Cheese.

Q: Do you get a lot of letters and gifts from fans?
A: Of course. I don't know exactly where they all come from though.

Q: Is it best to send mail to (?? Muramura music mail?)
A: If you want it to get here faster, it might be best.

Q: Where do you buy tendon?
    A: Tenya!

Q: I put matching misanga in with the letter, so will you please wear it? Even on your leg is fine..
A: Sure. I want to wear a lot of different ones with the seasons from now on.

Q: I haven't gotten a response yet from the letter I wrote you, was it too much of a bother?
A: Don't say stuff like that... Sorry. I'll reply soon so wait a little longer. It's not a bother at all so send away!

Q: Do you play any games at all?
A: No. If you know any good games, tell me about them.

Q: Where is the golden key?
A: I'm not really interested, but I asked around just for you. A dog in Zahan is carrying it. Where's my thank you?

    Q: Is your cold better?
A: Thanks to everyone I'm fine now.

Q: Can I call out your name(?)
A: There's no time limit(?) so think about it.

    A: ( 。_ 。) Big face!!!

Q: Do you have any weird nicknames?
    A: Yes!

Q: On some flyers it says the new release will go on sale on the 17th, on others it says the 24th. Which is it.
A: It was the 24th. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Q: What is your band's concept?
A: To color everything purple. Check out our magazine appearances for more.

Q: Did you play any other music or genres before you got into visual kei?
A: I was in a Green Day copy band.

Q: Do you design your own costumes, or do you have a designer?

Q: Do you have any favorite brands besides Number Nine?
    A: WORLD WIDE LOVE!

A: Everyday topics in letters and emails are just fine!!

It seems like you're catching cold so please take care.

Viva Kolonia boys, and welcome to Germany! Are you here for the first time? (translator's note: "Viva Kolonia" is a famous exclamation meaning "Long live Cologne")
Kazuki: Yes, this is our first time in Germany. We are already pretty excited. We haven't seen that much by now, only the Rhein, but we definitely want to do some sightseeing.
    Yuuto: And drink beer!

Strange, all of you coming to Germany want to do that. Do you have any expectations concerning Germany or your fans?
Byo: No, actually not. We will try to give do our best and give our german fans an awesome show.

Did you notice the fans in front of the door? They are already waiting since last night and built up tents in front of the venue. Do you also know sceneries like this from Japan?
Byo: No, this is really incredible! We rarely have something like this in Japan. But this is because of our ticket system. You already get a number before everything starts so you do not need to wait in front of the venue. You already know who will enter when and in which order.

You perform here with some other known bands, Kra, alice nine., SuG and Kagrra,. Do you know each other or have you even shared a stage in the past?
Byo: Of course, we're all at the same label (PSC). We already played festivals together and there are also friendships among the bands.

    What are your musical rolemodels?
Yuuto: I can't really speak of rolemodels. I feel deeply connected to the Visual Kei Style and like almost all bands from that genre.
Jin: I like Green Day and Slipknot a lot.
Yuuto: Yes, of course we also like foreign bands. For example Radiohead. It would be cool to perform together with them.

Yuuto, you mentioned the term Visual Kei. Is this the category you would put yourself into as a band?
Byo: Yes, at least regarding the style. Actually Visual Kei only describes the style and the appearance. There are still a lot of differences musically. We're rather making rock and would consider us to be a Rock-Band while being a Visual Kei Band at the same time.

When your appearance is so important to you... who styles you? Are you doing it yourselves?
Kazuki: We decide on the direction but also work together with a professional stylist.

But the bandname was certainly made up by you. What does ScReW mean for you?
Byo: With that we want to express that we're not linear. Linear is boring, screwed is way more exciting. That is why we picked ScReW.

Now you're in Germany and outside are already the first fans waiting for the sold out concert tomorrow. Aren't you surprised that japanese music is so popular over here?
Yuuto: We already knew what would await us. But we were pretty surprised when people in Japan told us how well liked Visual Kei is over here. We are really more than happy to be here. This is simply amazing!

Let's talk a bit about how you came to the band.
Byo: A friend of mine gave me the idea to join a band and sing. Maybe I wouldn't have had so much self-confidence myself.
Jin: I also didn't feel like joining a band for a long time. Then I saw a band performing at a school event and realized that that's what I want to do, too.
Yuuto: My story is similar. Music was actually meant to be a hobby for me but now it became my job.
Manabu: I already knew pretty early that I want to become a musician and perform with a band.
Kazuki: For me it's the same as for Byo. A friend inspired me to get professional with music.

And how did you find each other?
Yuuto: Byo and me already knew each other for some time. We also used to play in another band together. We got to know Kazuki and Manabu through some friends and Jin through the Internet.

Are you also personal friends? What are you doing in your free time?
Byo: Sure, we're also friends but we're working a lot at the moment. That's why we take our free time to do something else without the band. Being in Germany I really want to see the Loreley. And in Japan I love to go shopping.
Jin: Shopping is always good. I also love buying clothes or looking at instruments.
Yuuto: I actually prefer to have my own peace and go for a walk.
Manabu: I'm also rather at home alone and listen to music or watch movies.
Kazuki: I like to read and I love playing videogames.

Interview with SCREW during J-ROCK INVASION
One day before the J-ROCK INVASION, we had the opportunity to interview SCREW, a recently formed visual kei band who would be performing live for the first time in Europe. The five musicians, all wearing thick jackets and looking a bit tired from the long flight, greeted us warmly in one of the backstage rooms of the Cologne Palladium.

Hello, please introduce yourself to our readers!

Jin: I am the drummer of the band, Jin.
Yuuto: I am Yuuto, the bassist.
Manabu: My name is Manabu and I’m guitarist.
Kazuki: I’m also a guitarist and my name is Kazuki.
    Byo: I’m the vocalist, Byo.

You are in Germany for the first time now. What impressions have you already gathered and what do you think about Germany?

Jin: I heard before that Germany is great, and that the German fans are generally in a good mood. I like that, and I hope that will come true tomorrow!
Yuuto: I have only seen Cologne and to me, this town is very beautiful, as if it’s from a movie!
Manabu: Since I’ve arrived at the airport, I’ve felt as if the air is somehow different here.
Kazuki: I’ve heard that it would be very cold in Germany. But personally I find the climate very comfortable.
Byo: I think that the German people are very good at soccer. (laughs)

Tomorrow you will perform at the J-ROCK INVASION. What are your expectations?

Jin: I will be very happy if we can make the fans enthusiastic with our sound.
Yuuto: That is our main goal when we perform in Japan, but here we are so close to the fans, I like that.
Manabu: I think that the German fans react and feel differently from the fans in Japan. I’m really excited to see how the fans will accept us, what it will feel like.
Kazuki: We want to prove ourselves and show that we can deliver a good show.
Byo: We want - especially as a Japanese band - to make an impression with our performance.

Manabu, you were the last to join the band and have only been a member of the band since May 2007. How do you feel about being a part of the band?

Manabu: I am very happy to be a member of this band. It’s really great and it gives me great joy.

What meaning does the name 'SCREW' have?

Byo: I don't really like things to be 'straight forward,' I prefer things with which you need to use your head, to think about it. The people need to listen to us carefully, intensively, to 'screw' themselves into us, and as a band, we want to do the same to our fans (laughs).

How did you all meet each other?

Yuuto: Well, Byo and I had been making music together before and Kazuki was introduced to us by acquaintances, and we immediately thought he fit with us. We got to know Jin through the internet (laughs), we thought he was cool and fit with us as well. Manabu was also introduced to us by a friend and joined us then.

Byo and Yuuto, the two of you have been together in a band before. How come you are together in a band again?

Yuuto: In between, I’ve also made music with other people, but I’ve noticed that Byo and me simply fit together best. I’m having the most fun with him, but we also have the best results musically and we both gain advantages from that.

You are a relatively young band and already got the opportunity to perform abroad. What do you think about this?

Jin: When we experienced this, we were truly very surprised, because we are such a young band. We hadn’t counted on it, but this chance has made us ambitious – we want to deliver a great show and not to 'lose' to the other bands.

We've heard that your live shows are very interesting. How can they be described?

Jin: Our songs are hard, yet at the same time they also contain nice melodies. We want to transmit this interaction on stage as good as possible.

Byo, you’ve been a roadie of the band Kagerou and once said their vocalist Daisuke is like a role model to you. Why?

Byo: Yes, that’s right. I’ve learned a lot through Daisuke, he was like a teacher for me. His influence has definitely shaped me in a good way.

In your music, one can find several musical styles. Do you decide beforehand in what kind of direction a song will go, or does that happen spontaneously?

Kazuki: Byo usually gives a structure and tells us how he imagines the song. Then the rest of the band creates accordingly to this image, a song that we like. But usually we decide beforehand in what direction that particular song will go and what kind of theme it’ll have.

In your opinion, did joining the label Indie PSC help your career?

(The band discusses this for a moment with their manager)
Byo: At first the band was pushed a lot of course. Moreover, Manabu joined and the band grew, he is really an asset to us. So it was a positive decision that has really helped us.

Why did you only do those so-called 'secret lives' at the beginning of your career?

Byo: We first wanted to see what it was like, to perform with the four of us. We first needed to put out our feelers (laughs).

Do you have a certain message that you want to transmit through your songs?

Yuuto: We don’t have a special message, but it depends on the song we play. The listener has to absorb our music and then decide for themselves what message they find in it.

How did you get into visual kei and what fascinates you about it?

Jin: Most of all, I was influenced by X JAPAN and my passion for music has brought me to visual kei. This band has really influenced me.
Yuuto: I especially like that in the visual kei scene several music styles dominate. There are pop-like bands, very heavy bands and several melodious bands. I like this variety.
Manabu: For me, I enjoy everything that belongs to the scene and especially the extraordinary style.
Kazuki: I can only agree with that. The style really fascinated me, but I’ve also been influenced by my older friends who were interested in this style, and the music also got me into it.
Byo: God told me, you should become a follower of visual kei! (laughs)

And what kind of music do you listen to in private?

SCREW: Slipknot and Radiohead. And we also listen to our own music often!

As a band, do you have any goals for the future?

Jin: We want to develop ourselves more as a band and be successful.
Yuuto: We don’t want to perform in Germany only, we also wish to play our music everywhere in the world.
Manabu: We want to become more successful step by step and improve ourselves musically.
Kazuki: I think that one always has a goal, reaches it and then sets themselves a new, higher goal. At the moment I’m looking forward to tomorrow and see this performance as a goal, after that I’ll find a higher goal!
Byo: We would like to tour Germany by ourselves.

To end the interview with, do you have a message for our readers?

Jin: I hope that you will get to know SCREW better and that you’ll like us.
Yuuto: We want to be a famous Japanese band and we would be happy if the readers from JaME would support us with that.
Manabu: I'll also be happy when, through the help of the readers, our popularity in Germany grows. Thanks!
Kazuki: We will definitely return to Germany and hope to be supported by you with that!
Byo: I would be happy about new friends. (laughs)

Seven Bands Rock Out Kanazawa AZ during Stylish Wave CIRCUIT MAX '08

    SCREW

At 17:00 the crowd was in place, filling the hall all the way to the back row, murmuring excitedly to the background music of well-known hide songs. It wasn't long before the curtain was drawn back to reveal the blood-lit stage and the five members of SCREW, backs turned to the audience, each with one arm raised. The atmosphere in the hall was suddenly transformed into something wild and violent as the heavy, fast rhythm of Death's door sent the crowd into a melee of head banging as the band burst into motion.

Vocalist Byou stole the show with his death vocals, screaming, sharp aggressive gestures, and alternatively melodious singing style. As he mounted the barrier, the song's conclusion bled right into the intro for VANQUISH, which amazingly took the aggression up a notch further. The band moved in unison, lurching forward together and the crowd imitated their movements. Yuuto and kazuki took turns on the barrier to give their solos, and as the crowd became more riled up, Byou was pulled off the stage and into the throng of people until some of the staff pulled him back to the stage. He continued to scream to the audience and get them ever more stirred up, so that even after the song ended the crowd was throwing out their own death growls like a pit of crazed demons.

Byou gave the MC, asking if everyone was having fun, and then asking for a towel because his mouth was bleeding. Someone from the audience threw him a towel, to which Byou responded, "Thank you, Kanazawa!" He didn't seem phased by his injury at all, and asked if the audience wanted to hear a new song. They cheered their approval, but he encouraged them more, "Do you wanna hear it?" until the answering applause were loud enough for him. And with that the new song, Wailing Wall, began. Upbeat and optimistic, it had a sprinting feeling, inspiring air punching and head banging from the crowd. The song featured a brief sitar-like guitar solo, followed by a ferociously screaming guitar part from kazuki.

For the last song Byou mounted the barrier at the edge of the stage again and got pulled into the audience. He lay on top of the crowd singing, apparently comfortable performing that way, and eventually made his way back to the stage. S=r&b was wild and deranged during the verses, but the chorus had a gorgeous, optimistic melody. Though the crowd joined hands and swayed during the slower bridge, the song soon became completely violent and heavy, accentuated by the red lighting of the stage. Byou then shared the mike with Yuuto, alternating screams. Yuuto missed his last scream, instead turning to face Byou, and to the delight of the audience, the two briefly kissed. The finish was incredibly loud and violent, as though too much sound filled the hall. Jin seemed to be near pounding his drum kit into pieces. He was the last to leave the stage and made the crowd scream for him before tossing them his water bottle. And so ended the first act of the night, an exciting way to kick off the show.
