The Exiled: Dark Stars
Claws and Fangs
We could not return to Paradise, so we had to survive
in the outside world.
We are Exiles. Unwanted. Punished.
All who knew the truth about Paradise shall be exiled.
That was one of the secret laws written in the Laws of Paradise.
Even though they should leave us be and let us starve
to death, they decided that exiling Special Kids would not kill them, so they
sent Wolves, specially trained people, to execute us. They couldn’t let
Paradise’s existence be leaked to the ordinary people of the sinned world.
That’s why, our survival is a catastrophe to them.
“Is Zyen among the Wolves?” I asked Ig once we got out
of the elevator.
“It’s too muffled to make out his sound, but I can
sense jagged breathing. If El did some damage to the guy, the jagged breathes
would belong to him.” He answered in an unusual calm voice. “We have to keep
moving. They’re still sniffing us out.”
“So what do we do to lose them, like, dip ourselves in
bat poop?”
Raleigh smiled his rare but heart melting smile. I
immediately felt embarrassed for saying such a stupid thing. Elliah tugged hard
at my sleeves, so I went and took a quick walk through the supermarket. They
were offering free samples of sausages and sashimi. I brought Elliah over and
let her try some, while Ig attracted the clerk’s attention by acting as an
interested blind tourist customer with his assistant, Raleigh.
We scooped as much food as we could, then I tapped
Ig’s hand. He told the clerk that he would buy a cutting board first, and we
head off. Raleigh and Ig grabbed the food we hid and shoved them in their
mouths hungrily.
After sorting out the business with our stomachs, we
took the elevator to the top floor which there was nothing but a balcony and a
small garden with benches. A perfect place to run or fight.
We waited, our heartbeats like the drums in metal
music. I tried to calm my wild heartbeat but it was no use. I was sweating like
crazy from the heat, the moisture, and the tension. Zyen could be here any
moment, bearing his fangs and tearing at my throat. But I waited. I’d see him,
confront him, and kick his ass back to the Paradise he belonged.
Soon, the smell of iron attacked our nostrils. Zyen
emerged from the collection of black shadows, his golden bangs sticking out
from the hood. He was smart enough not to remove the mask, but I can see traces
of dried blood all over his cloak.
“Are your eyes alright, puppy?” Ig asked with a cocky smile,
trying to sound braver than he actually is. “Must’ve hurt. But what hurts more
is to be blinded by a little girl whom you kicked out of Paradise with no
mercy, you dog!”
Zyen was unusually calm. Elliah wrote rapidly on
Ignatius’s hand. The Wolves’ masks reflected the harsh sunlight and made my
eyes irritate.
“What do you mean, he only looked…”
“I was cautious enough to close my eyes before my
irises exploded.” Zyen said with a smirk. He never smirked. What in the world
got into him? Did the pain cause him to go insane? “I lost part of my vision,
but I can still enjoy the sensation of strangling you.”
“Over my dead body, rabid dog.” Raleigh cut in
abruptly.
“Ours.” Ig corrected. He had a big smile on his face.
A smile that said ‘fun is about to begin.’
“Why are you trying to kill us? To conceal the
identity of Paradise?”
“That’s true. That’s why I accepted this mission.”
Zyen flipped back his hood and combed his hand through his golden mass of hair.
“And to see you again. Destiny. My Destiny.”
My heart froze, my gaze locked onto his abyss-like
pupils, one of them surrounded by bloody tears. His eyelashes still caked with
dark red blood.
“What do you…want from me?” My lips trembled, unable
to utter any more words. I did not dare to make assumptions of what his words
might mean. Eyes blank, he clarified his sentence from earlier:
“I want to save you from the darkness of the Outside World.
That’s why I want to kill you.”
