    The Exiled: Dark Stars

    The Search

It rained first thing in the morning. Raleigh laid facing up towards the gray sky that covered him like a monochrome ceiling. Raindrops splashed into his eyes, seeping into his very soul, and hiding his tears. The mud and blood from last night’s fight were all over him in a layer of dirt, and the mud formed by the rain caked his clothes.

Elliah laid down with Ignatius under a mango tree. The blind guy took out a couple of Wolves himself, but most of it was Raleigh’s work. Around them were Wolves blood and pieces of Wolf’s clothes. They would not fight all out. Revealing themselves to the general public of the Outside World is a risk, so they had no choice but to cut the prolonged battle short.

    Raleigh was very relieved.

They walked back to the mansion. At first, they planned to flee but ended up right next to her door. Even though her English was awkward, she still gestured them to come in and called the doctors to treat their wounds. She was of Chinese, Thai, and Malaysian descendant. Traces of all the cultures scattered around in her beautiful marble mansion, so neat you might think the housekeeper had OCD.

They chose to tell no one about the Wolves. Even if they got the Wolves, they would not say anything. Paradise could intervene the Outside World to an extent, and saving those guy’s asses out of prison would be nothing. Still, Paradise had no power over the media. The four of them weren’t good at keeping secrets, that’s why they were exiled, but now they have changed.

Bangkok, in a way, is a city full of exiles. People, specifically immigrants who had nowhere to go, no way to live in their former countries, roamed the city. They lived as exiles by choice. Others were people who came from all over the country, exiled by poverty, drawn in by the riches the capital has to offer.

He knew he had to search for Destiny. If you knew where to live, you would stay out of the city’s darkest spots. But Bangkok, being a crowded city and major trading place, had everything from prostitution to drugs to arms. Destiny, being clumsy and careless, could get caught up in any of those. Not like being captured by the Wolves is any better.

Raleigh rummaged the fridge and searched for the tray of steamed pork blood used to make the soup from yesterday. He shoved two handfuls of dark red cubes into his mouth, grabbed a machete covered by a plastic sheath, and headed out. Elliah was in the backyard, picking gourd leaves to make dinner. She watched Raleigh, dressed in black from sole to crown, as he walked out.

Raleigh went to the nearest shopping center and waited for the bus, heading to the heart of the city. After lurching on a bus, whose driver drove like a Fast and Furious maniac, he arrived at his destination. Raleigh roamed around for a while, stopping to plan his search route. He had no idea where Destiny could be, but he had to find her, fast.

Having a built-in radar like Ignatius would be useful. He tried looking from atop a building, but it was too hazy to see clearly. He tried the next thing, which is to draw a picture of her from memory and showed it to the pedestrian. He stripped a piece of advertisement off an electric pole, picked up a dropped pen, and started drawing.

“I think I see her.” A business man replied in English with a heavy Thai accent. “Near my job.” He added hesitantly. Raleigh asked where that was, and rushed to the location.

The rain began pouring. Hopefully, that would erase his scent from the Wolves. But the wind became stronger, and the clouds rumbled. He realized that a thunderstorm was coming. Rain showered down, and drops of water banged mercilessly, drenching every inch of his skin. The streets began to flood rapidly. Raleigh squinted and looked up.

A dark figure of a human being flew through the sky. He could not be more certain that it was Destiny. He heard howling in the distance. He had to get ahead of the Wolves.

“Dang, that girl used the same trick twice!”

“Why were you even stupid enough to let her use a trick I told you about?”

“Who knew her psyche got so strong she can cut iron!? I used the suppression drug, but it didn’t work!”

Zyen and Ilyushka were running in front of all the Wolves, using superhuman strength to jump from roof to roof. They weren’t fast enough to catch someone who was flying, but they were hard to lose. Destiny’s eyes darted from the Wolves to the ground below. Her tiniest bit of hope telling her that Raleigh might be out, looking for her somewhere.
