ลำดับตอนที่ #3 : พบกับคุณยาย Met grandmother
นัยาสีน้ำาลอ่อนอหิราเบิว้า มือหนึ่ับบานประู อีมือหนึ่ทาบแ้ม เธออุทานเบาๆ "สวรร์่วย" The old lady's brown eyes were wide opened, one hand clutched at the door and another was against her cheek. She explained gently, "Heaven help me!"
"สวัสี่ะ" แม่พูเสียสั่นๆ อย่ามีมารยาท "Hello", mum said politely with shaky voice.
มืออหิราเลื่อนาแ้มมาปิริมฝีปาที่สั่นระริ เธอสูลมหายใยาว่อนะยมือทาบอ และราวับเธอั้สิไ้็พูึ้น้วยน้ำเสียนุ่มลึน่าฟัว่า "้เ้ามาสิ๊ะ เ้ามา" อย่าเป็นมิร อ้าประูให้เราเินผ่านเ้าไป The old lady's hand moved from her cheek to cover her shivering lips. She took a deep breath before putting her hand on her chest. And as if she had managed to pull herself together and said in a soft, gentle, deep friendly voice, "Come in, please come in"
มีประูอีบานหนึ่อยู่ถัไปาประูบานแร อย่านี้นี่เอเราึไม่ไ้ยินเสียริ่ ุยายปิประูนอเมื่อเราเินเรียแถวันเ้าไปยืนอยู่ที่ทาเินยาวปูระเบื้อสีำสลับาวเหมือนระานหมาฮอส มีบันไทอึ้นไปั้นบน เมื่อเธอปิประูบานที่อยู่้านใน เสียอื้ออึอลมหนาวและารรารภายนอ็เียบไปทันที ในบ้านนั้นเียบสนิท ไ้ยินแ่เสียนาฬิาั้พื้นโบราเรือนให่ส่เสียิ๊่อเบาๆ เป็นัวาลน่าฟั There was another door once we got inside and that was why we couldn't hear the doorbell. Grandmother closed the front door when we came inside and stood in a single file in a long hallway. There was a staircase and the floor had black and white square tiles look like a chess board. When she closed the second floor door, the house felt silent - no noise from the wind and the traffic outside. The only noise was the soft echoing tick tock of an old big grandfather clock.
"เ้ามานั่ในห้อนั่เล่นเถอะ" เธอเปิประูทา้ายมือ นำเราเ้าไปในห้อนั่เล่น "Please come in the lounge." she opened the door on the left hand side, leading us to the living room.
"นั่ๆ" เธอผายมือไปยัเ้าอี้ท้าวแน และะที่เรา่า็นั่ลอย่ามีมารยาท เธอ็ถามว่า "ื่มาหรือาแฟี๊ะ" "Please, sit down.", she handed us to the couch and armchairs. As we were sitting down politely she said, "Would you like tea or coffee?"
เรามอหน้าันเลิ่ลั ันับเบนไม่ื่มทั้าและาแฟ ันรู้ว่าแม่ื่มาแฟ แ่หนนี้แม่ลับอบว่า "า่ะ" We looked at each other. Ben and I didn't drink tea nor coffee but I knew mum like her coffee but this time she said, "tea, please."
"า า" เธอพึมพัมแล้วยมือึ้นเหมือนพระปาห้ามาิ ่อนเินออไปาห้อพลาพึมพัม "า า" ไปลอทา "Tea, tea", grandmother murmured and put her hands up as if to surrender then she walked, muttering, "tea, tea" all the way out of the room.
เราทั้สามมอหน้าัน แล้วเบนเริ่มส่เสียหัวเราะหึๆ ในลำอ ่อนที่แม่ะทำิ้วมอเป็นเิห้าม Three of us look at one another and Ben started to chuckle before mum gave him a frown.
ันไม่แนใว่าเยินนาารไว้ว่าุยายเป็นนอย่าไร เป็นไ้ว่าันไม่เยมีบทสรุปที่แน่นอน ันเยินับนสูอายุในเมือไทยที่สวมแว่น ใส่ฟันปลอม หลัอ และเม่นามอลอแว่นูเราอย่าับผิอยู่ลอเวลา แุ่ยายที่ันเห็นวันนี้เป็นหิราที่บอ็ไม่มีใรเื่อว่าเป็นแม่อแม่ ทัู้่ไม่มีอะไรเหมือนันเลยสันิ แบบเียวับที่ันไม่มีอะไรเหมือนับหิสาวในภาพเียนที่ันอบ I was sure if I had ever imagine how my grandmother would be like. At least, I didn't think I ever had a conclusion. I was used to elderly people in Thailand who would be wearing glasses and false teeth with bent back and frown upon teenagers all the time. But my grandmother who I met today wasn't like that at all and no one would believe that she was my mum's mother because they had nothing like each other, the same way I had nothing like the girl in the painting I liked.
แ่ันอบุยายเหมือนอย่าที่ันอบหิสาวในภาพเียนนนั้น อายุอเธอะประมาหสิบเ็สิบปี ผมยุ่ๆ ที่รัเป็นมวยหลวมๆ รุ่ยๆ ผมสีเทาหอาวไปามาลเวลาไม่ย้อม ลับปล่อยให้มันหอาวไปามธรรมาิ เธอสวมุระโปรผ้าำมะหยี่สีแเลือนหลวมๆ และสวมเสื้อัเปิอลายอไม้ล้ายับผ้าม่านอเียสี่เสาที่โรแรม เธอใส่สายสร้อยิอทำ้วยหนัที่มีอไม้เล็ๆ สีาวเรียัน But I liked my grandmother the same way I liked the girl in the painting. She must be about sixty or seventy years old? messy grey hair which she put up as a loose bun and she didn't dye her hair. She wore a scarlet velvet loose dress and a flowery vast which looked like the curtain on mum's four poster bed. She also wore a leather choker with white flowers.
"อเี่" ันุิึ้นมาไ้ "อเี่เหมือนมุอไม้ที่าอยู่บนผมอผู้หินนั้น" และัน็มีวามรู้สึเหมือนับว่าุยายือหิสาวนนั้นในอนสูอายุ "They are daisy!", I figured. "They are daisy like that girl's hair wreath." then I felt like grandmother was that old version of that girl.
ันไม่รู้ว่าแม่รู้สึอย่าไรที่เห็นแม่อเธอเป็นรั้แรในรอบสามสิบห้าปี เพราะเท่าที่ันรู้มา แม่เิที่ประเทศอัฤษ่อนะย้ายลับไปอยู่เมือไทยอนอายุห้าวบ และเมื่อันลอบมอแม่อย่าสำรวรวราัน็บอไม่ไ้ว่าแม่รู้สึอย่าไรันแน่ แม่นั่ัวราิ หลัไม่ิพนัเ้าอี้ รูปร่าี แ่ัวเนี้ยบ สมบูร์แบบไม่มี้อำหนิ ใบหน้า็ไม่แสอารม์ใๆ ทั้สิ้น I didn't know how mum feel, seeing her mother for the first time in thirty five years. As far as I know, mum was born in England before moved to Thailand when she was five years old. And when I sneaked a look at my mum very carefully, I still couldn't say how she think of all these. She was sitting straight with legs close together, she didn't lean to the seat. She was in good shape and well dressed. She was flawless.
ุยายเินลับมาพร้อมับถาไม้บรรุถ้วยา ามบรรุน้ำาล้อน และเหยือใส่นม ล้วนทำ้วยินเผา เธอวาถาลบนโ๊ะเี้ยๆ ที่เธอเี่ยมัน้วยเท้าไปไว้ที่้หน้าเาผิ เธอสวมรอเท้าผ้าใบสีาวเหมือนรอเท้าใส่เล่นพละ ันใ้ศอระทุ้นายเบน เพราะไ้ยินเสียน้อายหัวเราะหึๆ อีแล้ว Grandmother walked in with a drink tray which contained tea cups, a sugar bowl and a jug of milk. They were earthware. She put the tray down onto a low table which she kicked it to the front of the fireplace. She wore a pair of white trainers! They were like our trainers in gym class! Ben was stifled a laugh when I elbowed him.
ุยายนั่ลบนเ้าอี้ยาวัวเียวับแม่แ่อี้านหนึ่ แล้วยาึ้นไว่ห้า ันสัเุเห็นว่าายระโปรอเธอมีลูปัแ้วและระเล็ๆ ปัิอยู่ มันสะท้อนแสแว้บวับ Grandmother sat on the other side of the same couch with mum. She crossed her legs and I noticed that there were some beads and pieces of mirror sew onto the hem of her dress - they gave shimmering lights.
"ลืมถามไปว่าใรอบาใส่น้ำาลเท่าไหร่ ใส่นมมาน้อยนาไหน" เธอว่า "I forgot to ask if anyone want any sugar in their tea.", she said.
"ไม่้อเป็นัวลเรื่อน้ำาหรอ่ะ" แม่ว่า "Please don't worry about the tea", mum said.
ุยายยิ้มอย่ามีมารยาท "ทุนพูภาษาอัฤษไ้ใ่ไหม๊ะ" เธอถาม แล้วมอูันับเบน Grandmother smiled politely, "So, does everybody speak English?", she asked and looked at Ben and I.
ันไม่เยอบเวลาที่ถูผู้ให่มอ เพราะันมีวามรู้สึเหมือนำลัถูับผิ แุ่ยายไม่ไ้มอันอย่านั้น แววาอเธอไม่ไ้มีแววับผิหรือแม้ระทั่ะนึำหนิหา้อเสียอะไร เธอมอันับเบนราวับำลัื่นมภาพเียน ราวับว่าเราเป็นานศิลปะ I had never liked to be looked at by old people because I felt like they were trying to accuse me of something. But grandmother didn't look at me that way, her eyes didn't give the impression that she was trying to find fault or making accuses. She looked at me and Ben as if she was admiring a painting as if we were artwork.
"็ถ้าุำไ้ ันไม่ไ้ไปอยู่เมือไทยนอายุห้าวบ ภาษาอัฤษเป็นภาษาแรอัน และุพ่อ็พูภาษาอัฤษับันลอมา ันเอ็พูภาษาอัฤษับลูบ่อยๆ" "If you still remember that I didn't go to live in Thailand until I was five years old, so English has always been my first language and Father has always spoken to me in English so I do the same with my children."
"อ๋อ..." ประายในาอุยายูวูบไปหน่อยเมื่อไ้ยินแม่เอ่ยถึุา "ุพ่ออลูสบายีหรือ๊ะ" "Oh, I see...", the light in her eyes grew dimmer once mum mentioned granddad. "Your father, is he well?"
"ไม่สบายหรอ่ะ" แม่ยัพูอย่าสุภาพ แ่น้ำเสียห่าเหิรเย้ยหยัน "ุพ่อป่วยระเสาะระแสะมาเป็นปีแล้ว" "No, he isn't well at all.", Mum spoke politely still but with to taunting, distant tone. "Father has been ill for a year now."
"เอ้อ..." ุยายพยัหน้า ้มมอพื้นอยู่รู่เล็ๆ ่อนะเยึ้นสบาับแม่ "เสียใ้วยริๆ นะ๊ะ" "Oh...okay.", she nodded and looked down at the floor for a little while before looked up at mum, "I'm so very sorry to hear that."
ันับเบนเริ่มระหนัถึวามอึอัระหว่าแม่ับุยาย เรารู้ว่ามันเป็น่วเวลาที่สำัเพียไร และับาูทัู้่ราวับำลัูภาพยน์ สอแม่ลูนั่อยู่ในห้อเียวัน บนเ้าอี้ยาวัวเียวัน แ่แ่าันราวับอยู่ันนละโล Ben and I started to realise the awkwardness between mum and grandmother. We knew how important it was and we watched both of them as if we were watching a film. Mother and daughter in the same room, sitting on the same couch and yet they were so different as if worlds apart.
สุนัหูยาวสีำปนาวเินเาะแะเ้ามาในห้อแล้วล้มัวลนอนบนพื้นปูพรมไม่ไลาเท้าอเบน A black and white dog with long ears tottering inside the room and laid down on the rug not far from Ben's feet.
"สนู๊ปปี้" ุยายบอเมื่อเห็นเบนมอเ้าหมาแล้วมอูุยายเหมือนะออนุาิเล่นับมัน "มันื่อสนู๊ปปี้ มันไม่ัหรอ๊ะ แล้วมัน็อบให้นลูบลำ" "It's Snoopy.", grandmother said as she saw Ben kept looking at the dog and then at grandmother as if to ask if he could play with him. "His name is Snoopy and he won't bite. He loves to be fussed over."
่อนที่แม่ะทันพูอะไรออมา เบน็ไถลัวลาเ้าอี้แล้วลนั่ัสมาธิ้าสนู๊ปปี้ ลูบหัวมันแล้ว็เล่นับหูยาวๆ อมันทันที Before mum could say anything Ben slid down onto the floor and sat cross leged, rubbing his head and playing with his long silky ears.
ุยายยิ้มว้าอย่าเอ็นู าอเธอเป็นประาย "หมาับเ็" เธอว่า "ไม่มีอะไระเ้าันไ้ีไปว่าหมาับเ็" Grandmother smiled kindly and her eyes sparkled, "dogs and children," she said, "what else could be better than dogs and children?"
แ่แม่มวิ้ว เพราะแม่ไม่อบหมา เราเยอเลี้ยหมาันั้ไม่รู้ี่หน แ่แม่ไม่อนุาิ บอว่าหมาทำให้บ้าน่อเลอะเทอะสปร อบุหลุมในสนาม และเห่าเสียัหนวหู
"สนู๊ปปี้อายุเท่าไหร่แล้วรับุยาย" เบนถามอย่าเป็นันเอ ทำใหุ้ยายเป็นปลื้มึ้นมานน้ำาเอ่อ But mum was frowning because she didn't like dogs. We used to ask mum to have a dog but she didn't allow one, saying they made the house dirty and untidy and they would dig holes in the garden and barked.
"How old is Snoopy, grandmother?" Ben asked as if he was familiar with her which touched grandmother that she almost cried.
"อายุสามวบ๊ะ" เธออบ แล้วมอไปที่แม่ราวับรอให้เธอพูอะไรออมาบ้า แ่แม่ไม่พูอะไร ุยายีมอมาที่ัน "He's three." she replied and looked at mum as if waiting for her to say something but she didn't. Grandmother looked at me.
"หนูไม่รู้ว่าุยายมีหมา" "I didn't realise you have got a dog." I said
"ยายอยู่นเียว็้อมีหมาเอาไว้เป็นเพื่อนสิ๊ะ ไม่ใ่แ่หมานะ ยายยัมีแมว้วย แ่มันแอบนอนอยู่้าบน" "I'm on my own, so I have to have a dog to keep me company. Not only a dog, I have a cat too but she is hiding upstairs."
ันเห็นแม่อ้าปาเหมือนะพูอะไรแล้ว็เปลี่ยนใ ันรู้ว่าแม่ไม่อบแมว้วยเหมือนัน I saw mum was about to say something but changed her mind. I knew mum dislike cats too.
ุยายอยู่นเียว ันิ ันั้น็แสว่าุยายไม่ไ้แ่านใหม่ แุ่าแ่านใหม่ ุาแ่านับุยายอ่อนิี่แม่เรียว่า "แม่ม" และันับเบนเรียแว่า "ุยายิอ่อน" เพราะแอบเอะอะเอ็ะโรไปเสียทุเรื่อ ุาับุยายอ่อนิมีลู้วยันสอน และุยายอ่อนิมีลูที่ิมาับสามีน่อนอีสอน รวมแล้วเป็นสี่น พี่น้อนละแม่ที่ีแม่ไม่เยลรอย้วย และันับเบน็ไม่อบรอบรัวอุยายอ่อนิ รู้อย่านี้็ทำให้ันรู้สึใล้ิับุยายมาเป็นพิเศษ Grandmother was on her own, I thought. So it meant she wasn't remarried! Granddad did, he got married again to Grandmother Ornjit who mum called "the witch" Ben and I called her jitorn because she could go beserk at anything. Granddad and Grandmother Ornjit had two children together and she had two children of her own from the previous husband - the stepbrothers and sisters who mum didn't get along.
ุยายมอูเบนเล่นับสนู๊ปปี้้วยสายาอ่อนโยน รัใร่ ุยาย้อรู้แน่ๆ ว่าเาเป็นหลาน เพราะเามีผมสีน้ำาลและาสีน้ำาลเหมือนุยาย ารูปเม็ถั่วอัลมอน์ สวยริๆ Grandmother was watching Ben playing with Snoopy lovingly and gently. She must know that he was her grandson because they had the same brown hair and almond shaped brown eyes - so beautiful.
หนูอเล่นับแมวอุยายหน่อยไ้ไหมะ" ันถาม และแม่รีบประท้วทันที "ยายมิ้น์" "Can I please play with your cat?" I asked, and Mum protested at once, "No, Mint"
แุ่ยายยิ้ม ยมือห้ามแม่ แล้วพูับันว่า "ไ้สิ๊ะ ถ้าหนูึ้นไป้าบนแล้วหาูว่ามันไปแอบนอนหลับอยู่ที่ไหน แ่่อนไป บอยาย่อนว่าหนูื่ออะไร" But Grandmother just smiled and raised her hand to stop mum then said to me, "Of course, you can. Go upstairs and find where she is napping but before you go you must tell me your name first."
"หนูื่อมินรา่ะ ื่อเล่นว่ามิ้น์" "My name is Mintra, Mint for short."
"หน้าาสะสวยริๆ หน้าเหมือน...เอ้อ.." เธอพึมพัมับัวเอ "You are such a beautiful girl and you look just like...hmmm...", she murmured to herself.
ใอันเ้นึัเมื่อเินึ้นบันไไปั้นบน เพิเย่อสายาห้ามปรามอแม่ My heart was beating fast when I walked upstairs, ignoring mum's disapproving glare.
ันอยู่ในบ้านอุยายที่ประเทศอัฤษ ลืมไปั่วะว่าันอยาะไปื้อเสื้อผ้ามียี่ห้อ น้ำหอมแพๆ ันมีุยาย ุยายที่เป็นเพียุยายอันับนายเบน I was in my grandmother's house in England, forgetting now that I wanted to go and buy some brand name clothes and expensive perfume. I had a grandmother, who was Ben's and mine only.
เมื่อเินไปนถึสุบันไ ัน็พบเ้าแมวนอนอยู่บนั้นหนัสือและวาอุิ มันเป็นแมวสีเทาปนฟ้าสวยริๆ ันัมันึ้นในอ้อมแน มันไม่ว่าอะไรเลยสันิ ัวอมันทั้นุ่มและอุ่น When I got to the top of the stairs, I found the cat curled up, having a nap on the bookshelf. She had greyish, bluish fur and was very beautiful. I scooped her into my arms and she didn't mind one bit, her body was soft and warm.
ยัมีบันไทอึ้นไป้าบนอี ันสสัยว่าบ้านนี้มีี่ั้นันนะ แถมมันยัให่ว่าที่ันิ แ่ันไม่ล้าสำรว ันอุ้มแมวเินลบันไไป้าล่า พบว่าารสนทนาระหว่าแม่ับุยายูเหมือนะุเือึ้น อย่าน้อยที่สุัน็สัเุไ้าน้ำเสียอแม่ There were more stairs, lead to another storey which made me wonder how many storeys there were exactly. The house was bigger than I thought but I didn't dare to explore. I carried the cat and went downstairs and found that the conversation between mum and grandmother was getting heated, at least, from mum's tone of voice.
"แม่ไ้รับหมายาใรสันื่อุเรย์โนล์ เียนมาบอว่าลูสาวอแม่ะอนัพบที่บ้านในวันและเวลานี้ แม่็อบไปว่าแม่ยินี แม่ไม่รู้หรอว่ามันเรื่ออะไรันแน่ แ่แม่็สสัยว่าถ้าเธอไม่อยาพบแม่ เธอ็ะไม่มาถึที่นี่ ันั้นลูมีอะไรอยาะพู็ว่ามาเถอะ๊ะ ไม่้ออ้อม้อมหรอ เพราะเรา็แม่ลูันแท้ๆ" "I received a letter from someone called Mr Reynolds, saying my daughter asked to make an appointment to see me. I told him I was glad to do so. I don't really know what it is about but I wonder you must want to see me otherwise you wouldn't have come a long way. Please don't beat about the bush, we are, after all, mother and daughter."
"น่าำนะะ ทีุ่พูออมา่ายๆ ว่าเราเป็นแม่ลูันแท้ๆ ในเมื่อุ็ไม่เยิ่อถาม่าวราวเลยว่าันะเป็นายร้ายียัไ ไม่เห็นะเยแร์" "Funny, it's so easy for you to say we are mother and daughter when you have never been in contact or asked about how I have been, if I was dead or alive. You've never cared."
ันไม่เยไ้ยินแม่พู้วยน้ำเสียแบบนี้มา่อน แม่ฟัูเหมือนเ็ๆ เวลาที่ไม่ไ้อย่าใ และเสียอแม่ัึ้นๆ ทุที นสนู๊ปปี้ลุึ้นเินออาห้อไป ไม่แน่ใว่ารำาเบนหรือไม่อบเสียอแม่ แ่เบนลุเินามมันออไปาห้อ ะที่ันอุ้มแมวเินลบันไมา I had never heard mum speak with that tone of voice before. It sounded like a spoiled child didn't get her own way and her voice got louder and louder until Snoopy got up and walked out of the room whilst I came downstairs.
"ลูิไปเอว่าแม่ไม่แร์" เสียุยายพูแ้เบาๆ "You are wrong to think that I don't care.", she corrected mum with her soft voice.
"ะไปแร์ไ้ยัไะ ในเมื่อุไม่มีทารู้ไ้เลยว่าันะอยู่หรือาย ันอาะายในอุบัิเหุ ่อยเปลี้ยเสียา" "How can you? when you have no way of knowing how I live or die. I could've been in an accident. I could've been a cripple."
"แม่รู้เพราะแม่รู้ว่าพ่ออลูเาะเลี้ยูลูอย่าี" "I know that your dad has been taking good care of you."
"รู้ไ้ยัไัน รู้ไ้ยัไัน" แม่พูเสียแหลม ันับเบนมอหน้าันเลิลั่ เรานั่ล้วยันบนั้นบันไ มอเห็นแม่และุยายา่อประู และเี่ยฟับทสนทนาที่ัลอออมาาห้อนั่เล่น "How do you know? how?", mum shrieked. Ben and I looked at each other in alarm. We sat together on the stairs, watching mum and grandmother in the lounge through the door and listening to their conversation.
"ันเป็นแ่เ็ผู้หิที่ไม่มีแม่อยรัใร่อุ้มูทะนุถนอม ุไม่ไ้มาื่นมันในวันที่ันรับปริา ุไม่ไ้มายินีับันในวันแ่าน ุไม่ไ้มาอยู่้าเียอันในวันที่ันลอลู ในะที่นอื่นๆ เามีแม่มาอยู่้าๆ อย่วยเหลือให้ำลัใเป็นที่ปรึษา แ่ันไม่มีใร" "I am just a girl who has no mother who cared and nutured me. You weren't there to congratulate me on my graduation, you weren't there to be happy with me on my wedding day, you weren't at with me at the hospital when I gave birth when everyone else had their mothers with them, to give them some moral support, to give them some advice but I had nobody."
"็แล้วแม่เลี้ยอลูเาไม่ไ้่วยเหลืออะไรลูเลยหรือ๊ะ" "What about your stepmother? Didn't she support you at all?"
"ันไม่้อารแม่เลี้ย ัน้อารแม่อัน" แม่ร้อไห้ สะอึสะอื้นเหมือนเ็เวลาหล้มหัวเ่าแ "I DON'T want my stepmother! I WANT my mum." She cried, sobbing as if a child with scraped knee.
ันับเบนยัมอหน้าันอย่าระหน แล้วเบนทำท่าะลุึ้นไปหาแม่ แ่ันึเาไว้ Ben and I were still looking at each other in alarm, then he was to get up to mum but I pulled him back.
แม่ยัร้อไห้สะอึสะอื้น่อไปอยู่พัหนึ่ ุยาย่อยระเถิบเ้าไปใล้แม่มาึ้น ูท่าทาเป็นัวลแ่็ไม่แน่ใว่าวระทำอย่าไรี ในที่สุเธอ็ยื่นล่อทิูให้แม่ใ้ับน้ำาและสั่น้ำมู Mum carried on crying and sobbing for a while, grandmother slowly moved closer to mum. She looked worried but didn't know what to do. Eventually, she handed mum a box of tissues which mum took to wipe her tears and blow her nose.

My heart was beating so hard and I was tensed that I forgot that I had the cat in my arm and squeezed her tight, she meowed and leaped out of my arms.

I hope you would forgive me because it's my fault that I didn't try to take you back in my arms. Your dad had to go back to live in Thailand and I knew his family disliked me. Your dad's family was rich and famous and I thought you would be better off with them. I was a coward. I didn't do my best to have you with me but I didn't want you to regret later on and blame me if you knew I took you away from your rich family. I didn't think that you would be better off living with a masseur, a hippie, living life day by day without any ambition. I did think you would be happier and have a better life, living with your dad."

How do you know I would be unhappy and how do you know money would make me happy?"

I won't be able to change the past but I'm happy to do anything to make you happy now."
แ่แม่ไม่อบหาแุ่มท้อแน่น และทำเสียราวับำลัเ็บปวอย่าแสนสาหัส Mum didn't reply, she only clutched her stomach and made a noise as if she was in an enormous pain.

ันับเบนลุพรวึ้นพร้อมันแล้วรไป้าแม่ Ben and I go up instantly and went to mum.
"แม่รับ แม่" "Mum, mum."
ใบหน้าอแม่ีาว นัยาปิ ิ้วมว และัริมฝีปา มือ็ุมท้อแน่น Her face was white, her eyes were close. She bit her lips and her face was distorted, still clutching her stomach.
"เรียรถพยาบาล โทรเรียเ้าเ้าเ้า" ุยายลุพรวพราึ้นยืนแล้วะโนสั่ ันับเบนมอหน้าันเลิ่ลั ่อนทีุ่ยายะรู้สึัวว่าัวเอนั่นแหละที่ะ้อไปโทรศัพท์ "Call an ambulance! Call 999!!" Grandmother jumped up and shouted as Ben and I looked at each other, didn't know what to do, then she realised she was supposed to do it herself.
"ับให้แม่เานอนยาวไปบนเ้าอี้ ถอเสื้อหนาวออะไ้ไม่อึอั แล้วอยู่เป็นเพื่อนแม่เา ยายะไปโทรศัพท์เรียรถพยาบาล" "Help your mum to lay on the couch, take of the jumper and stay with her. I will call for the ambulance."
ันับเบนทำามทีุ่ยายสั่ และเี่ยหูฟัเสียุยายพูโทรศัพท์ามรถพยาบาล "...เร็วๆ เ้า มาเี๋ยวนี้เลย เี๋ยวนี้เลย" We did what she told us to do and listened to what she said on the phone. "...hurry up!! you need to come now, now."
เธอเินลับเ้ามาในห้อ ยมือึ้นปิปามอูแม่ที่นอนระสับระส่ายมือุมท้อ ใบหน้าบิเบี้ยว้วยวามเ็บปว She walked back into the room and put the hand over her mouth watching mum laying, twisting herself in agony.
"ุพระ่วย" เธอว่า แล้ว็เินลับไปลับมาท่าทาลุ้มอลุ้มใ "Oh god!", she said and pacing up and down with worry.
ันิว่าุยายะร้อไห้ แ่เธอไม่ร้อ I thought grandmother would cry but she didn't.
"แม่ะเป็นอะไรมามั้ยพี่มิ้น์" เบนถามอย่าัวล หน้าาว้าวุ่น ทำท่าเหมือนะร้อไห้ "Is mum seriously ill?" Ben asked worriedly, his face looked trouble as if he was going to cry.
"ไม่หรอ" ันอบให้เาสบายใ นึย้อนลับไปถึอนที่พ่อบอให้ันเป็นเพื่อนแม่และูแลน้อ ันไม่ิเลยว่าะ้อทำหน้าที่นี้ริๆ "No, she isn't.", I replied to pacify him, thinking back to when dad told me to keep mum company and to look after my brother. I didn't think then that I would really have to be doing it .
"เี๋ยวรถพยาบาล็มาพาแม่ไปโรพยาบาล แล้วหมอเา็ะรัษาแม่เอ" ันับมือแม่ไว้แน่น ในะที่แมุ่มมือันแล้วบีบ "The ambulance is coming to take mum to the hospital and the doctor will take care of mum." I held mum's hand tight as she squeezed my hand.

She went to another room at the front of the house where she could see the road. She was pacing up and down between the rooms, looking out of the window, looking at mum and the clock.
เบนร้อไห้ น้ำาไหลลพาแ้มเียบๆ ันเอ็เหมือนะเป็นลม ใเสีย หมปัาะหาำพูมาปลอบน้อาย Ben started to cry, his tears ran down his face silently. I felt faint, too upset to find anything nice to comfort my brother.
"มานี่หลานรั" ุยายปราเ้ามาึเบนไปอ "แม่เาไม่เป็นอะไรมาหรอ เื่อยายเถอะ เี๋ยวรถพยาบาล็มา ยายอยาให้เบนเอาสนู๊ปปี้ไว้ใล้ๆ ัวนะ อย่าให้มันเะะวาทาหรือทำสอรู้สอเห็น" เธอึเ้าหมาึ่มีสายูิับปลออ แล้วส่สายูให้เบน "แล้ว็อย่าปล่อยให้มันวิ่ออไปที่ถนนเวลาเราเปิประู ทำไ้ไหมลู" "Come here my child." Grandmother pulled Ben into her arms. "You mum is going to be okay, believe me. The ambulance is coming any minute now and I want you to have Snoopy with you and make sure he won't get in the way of the paramedics." She grabbed Snoopy who was in the lead and handed it to him
เบนรับสายูาุยาย พยัหน้าทั้น้ำา แู่เหมือนว่าะั้สมาธิไ้มาึ้น Ben held on to Snoopy's lead and nodded with tears but he seemed to be more with it.
ุยายหันมาที่ัน "เวลาที่รถพยาบาลมาถึ" เธอสั่าร "หนู้อไปับแม่เานะลู ยายับเบนะามไปทีหลั ไม่นานหรอ และะไปหาหนูที่โรพยาบาลไม่้อเป็นัวล" Grandmother turned to me. "When the ambulance comes," she said, delegate the task. "you have to go with your mum and Ben and I will follow. We won't be long. We will find you at the hospital, don't you worry."

รถพยาบาลมาถึ เปิหวอและไฟสีน้ำเินวูบวาบ The ambulance arrived with loud siren and flashing blue light.
"เบน หลานเอาสนู๊ปปี้ไปอยู่ับหลานในรัว" เธอบอเบน และเาทำามอย่าะมัะเม้น่อนทีุ่ยายะรีบไปเปิประู "Ben, please take Snoopy to the kitchen.", she told Ben and he instantly did as he was told.
"รถพยาบาลมาแล้ว่ะแม่" ันระิบบอแม่ ไ้ยินเสียุยายพู และเสียผู้ายพูอบ สนู๊ปปี้เห่าอยู่อีห้อหนึ่ "The ambulance is here, mum." I whispered to her, hearing grandmother speaking and a voice of a man replied. Snoopy was barking in another room.
บุรุษพยาบาลสอนเินเ้ามา เป็นายวัยลาน และายหนุ่มอายุยี่สิบ้นๆ ทัู้่ัวสูศีรษะเือบิเพาน Two male paramedics came in. One was a middle aged man and antoher was young, in early twenties. Both of them were so tall, their heads almost hit the ceiling.
บุรุษพยาบาลวัยลานนั่ยอๆ ล้าเ้าอี้ยาว แล้วทำารรวสอบแม่ ถามำถาม แม่อบไปราไป พยายามอธิบายอาารปวท้ออเธอ เาทำารรววามัน และวัอุหภูมิ ะที่บุรุษพยาบาลนที่อายุน้อยว่ารับหน้าที่รอเอสาร เาุยับุยาย ถามื่ออแม่ ประวัิสุภาพอแม่ ึุ่ยาย้อหันมาถามัน ายหนุ่มส่ายหน้าแล้วบอับุยายว่าเาไม่แน่ใว่าะ่วยแม่ไ้ เพราะถึแม่มีพาสปอร์อัฤษ แ่แม่ไม่ไ้เสียภาษีหรือ่ายเิน่าประันสุภาพับรับาลึไม่มีสิทธิในารไ้รับารใ้บริารแพทย์และสาธารสุที่นี่ The middle aged paramedics crouching down by the couch and checked on mum, he asked mum questions which she groaned and answered, trying to explain the pain in the stomach. He checked her blood pressure and her temperature. In the meantime, the younger paramedics was doing the paperwork, he was talking to grandmother, asking her about mum's details such as her name, date of birth and her health history which she had to ask me. The young man shook his head and said to grandmother that he wasn't sure if he could help mum because she didn't pay any taxes or national health insurance, even though she had a British passport but she wasn't entitled to any health and medical care in this country.
"ลูสาวันเป็นนอัฤษ เิที่นี่" ุยายพูพลาทำาพอโอย่าโรธเรี้ยว "แล้วัน็่ายเินประันสุภาพมาั้แ่สาวยันแ่ อย่ามาอ้านั่นอ้านี่ มันัับหลัมนุษยธรรม นไม่สบายะาิไหน ภาษาไหน็วระไ้รับารรัษาพยาบาลเท่าัน" "My daughter is British. She was born here." Grandmother's eyes wide open as if they were to pop with anger. "and I've paid my national health insurance since I was young until now I'm old. Don't talk gibberish, it's clearly against the human rights. When you are ill, no matter which nationality or which language they speak they are entitled to get the treatment all the same."
ายหนุ่มทำหน้าลืนไม่เ้าายไม่ออ มอันอย่าอวามเห็นใ "ผมทราบรับ แล้วผม็อยาะ่วย แ่พอีว่ามันมีระเบียบที่ผม้อปิบัิาม" The young man looked awkward, he looked at me as if to ask for sympathy. "I know, and I really want to help but there are rules and regulations I have to follow."
ระเบียบที่ให้ละทิ้มนุษยธรรมน่ะเหรอ น่าละอายริๆ " ุยายพูเสียแ็ ไม่ยอมอ่อน้อ"ถ้าหาว่าลูสาวันไม่ไ้ึ้นรถพยาบาลไปโรพยาบาลล่ะ้อ ันะเอาวานไปามไอ้รถพยาบาลที่อยู่้านอนั่นให้เป็นเสี่ยไปเลย" "Rules and regulations to abandon the human rights? so shameful!", grandmother said adamantly. "If my daughter doesn't get on that ambulance, I will get my ax and hack it to pieces."
ายหนุ่มหน้าี ยมือึ้นพยายามะอธิบาย "ไม่ใ่ว่าผมไม่อยาะ่วย ผมไม่ไ้เป็นนออระเบียบพวนี้ มันเป็นนโยบายอรัฯ" The young man went white, put his hands up, trying to explain, "It's not that I don't want to help. I'm not the one who creates these rules but it's the government's policy."
ุยายเินหายไปาห้อรู่หนึ่แล้วลับมาพร้อมับวาน้ามยาวหน้าาโบร่ำโบราในมือ Grandmother left the room and in a while came back with an old looking long handled ax in her hands.
"ให้มันรู้ันไปสิว่ายายแ่อย่าันนี่ะไม่มีปัาปป้อลูสาวัน" เธอระับวานในมือ โ่อ เหลือามอายหนุ่มท่าทาเอาึั ูเหมือนาเรียมพร้อมระโโู่่อสู้
"ถ้าืนุป้าทำแบบนั้น ผม็ะ้อโทรเรียำรวนะรับ" "Let's see if an old woman like me would have no gut to help my daughter.", she shifted the ax in her hands, shoulders down and looked up at the young man in a threatening fashion. She looked like a toad preparing to strike.
"I will have to call the police if you do such a thing."
"อ๋อ ไ้เลย" ุยายท้า "โทรไ้เลย โทรเี๋ยวนี้เลย็ยัไ้ ันะไ้ามรถำรวะ้วย แล้วถ้าลูสาวันเป็นอะไรไป ันะไปเผาสถานีำรว รมำรว โรพยาบาล ระทรวสาธารสุ ประท้วที่หน้ารัสภา เียนหนัสือร้อเรียนถึนายฯ ศาลโล ยูเนสโ้ รีนพี อ์รรัษาสิทธิและมนุษยธรรม..." "Oh, yes!" she urged him on, "Call them, call them now. I will hack up the police car as well. If anything happened to my daughter, I will go and burn the police station, the headquaters, hospital, Department of Health and I will protest outside the parliament. I will write to the prime minister, to International court, UNESCO, Greenpeace, Human Rights Watch...

Mum said we had to be careful and get ready that we might not just have good time when we were on holiday. So, I told grandmother.
"แม่ทำประันสุภาพไว้่ะุยาย" "Grandmother, mum has a health insurance."
ุยายะั มือำวานล้าัว Grandmother paused, the hand that held the ax fell to her side.
"หนูว่าแม่มีเอสารอยู่ในระเป๋าถือ" ันปราไปวยระเป๋าถืออแม่ที่่อนหน้านั้นเราหยิบึ้นไปวาบนั้น ุยายวาวานลที่มุมห้อ แล้วทุน็่วยัน้นหาเอสารในระเป๋าถืออแม่ "I think mum has the document in her handbag", I hurried to grab mum's hand bag on the shelf. Grandmother put the ax at the corner of the room and everyone tried to find this document in mum's handbag.
"เราะ้อพาเธอไปส่แผนุเินรับ" บุรุษพยาบาลทีู่อาารแม่ประาศ ะเียวับที่บุรุษพยาบาลอีนวยแผ่นระาษในอสีน้ำาลอออ่าน "เอแล้ว ประันสุภาพเวลาเินทาับบูพา" "We have to take her to A&E.", the paramedics who was taking care of mum announced as the younger man took a piece of paper out of a brown envelop and had a quick read. "Found it! Travel health insurance with BUPA!"
"สวรร์่วย" ุยายถอนหายใอย่าโล่อ "Thank God!", grandmother gave a big sigh of relief.
บุรุษพยาบาลวัยลานหันไปถามแม่ว่าเธอลุึ้นยืนไ้ไหม แม่พยายามัฟันลุนั่แ่แล้ว็ทำหน้าเหยเ ล้มฟุบลไปอี The middle aged paramedics turned to mum and asked her if she could stand up. She tried to sit up but screwed her face with pain and fell back on the chair.
"ไปเอาเปลมา" เาสั่บุรุษพยาบาลหนุ่ม "We need the stretcher!" he told the young man.

"มินรา หลานนั่ไปในรถพยาบาลับแม่เานะลู" เธอส่ระเป๋าถืออแม่ให้ัน แล้วึเอสารประันสุภาพออามือสั่นๆ อัน ยัใส่ระเป๋าถืออแม่ให้้วย "แล้วนี่โทรศัพท์มือถืออยาย ยายะไ้ิ่อับหนูไ้ ยายับน้อะามไปทีหลั แล้วถ้าหนู้อาริ่อยาย็โทรหายายไ้ที่เบอร์โทรนี่" เธอยัโทรศัพท์มือถือ นามบัรอเธอ และเินอียี่สิบปอน์ลในระเป๋าแล้วส่ให้ัน "Mintra, you have to go with the ambulance with your mum." she handed me mum's hand bag and put the insurance document from my shaky hand in it. "and here is my mobile phone. you take it so I can call you. Ben and I will see you at the hospital later. If you need to contact me then call me on this number." she put the mobile phone and her name card and a twenty pounds note in the bag before handed it to me.

"ไม่้อลัวนะลู" ุยายปราเ้าไปุมมือแม่ "แม่ะับรถามไปที่โรพยาบาล" "Don't you worry." Grandmother came to hold mum's hand. "I will drive to the hospital."
"ฝาลูๆ" แม่พยายามพู "Please take care of the children." Mum tried to speak.

I will take care of everything." she said, while the paramedics carried the stretcher to the green and yellow ambulance, parked next to the footpath on the main road. There was just enough space for traffic to go pass.

He pulled the bed inside it.

แล้ว็เินรไปเาะหน้า่าระที่ั้นระหว่าส่วนนับับส่วนปมพยาบาล He walked inside and knocked at the window which separated the driver's part and the back.
"เรียบร้อยแล้ว ออรถไ้เลย" "Everything's okay, we can go."
รถพยาบาลเลื่อนัวออ ันนั่ล อระเป๋าถืออแม่ไว้แน่นับัว The ambulance drove off. I sat down, hugging mum's hand bag tightly to my body.
แม่อยู่บนเียเบื้อหน้า มีหน้าาให้อ๊อิเนทาบอยู่ที่ปาและมู ายหนุ่มเปิเรื่อมือปมพยาบาลเบื้อ้นออ แล้วใ้เรื่อมือเาะเลือานิ้วอแม่ ทำารรวสอบ่อนะอะไรยุยิในแบบฟอร์มที่ิับลิปบอร์ บนออมพิวเอร์ที่ห้อยลมาาเพานรถแสถึารเ้นอหัวใอแม่ ันไม่มีวามรู้ทาารแพทย์พอที่ะบอไ้ว่าหัวใอแม่เ้นเป็นปิีหรือไม่ แ่เส้นหยิๆ อๆ โ้ึ้นๆ ลๆ ่ำบ้า สูบ้าบอให้รู้ว่าแม่ยัหายใอยู่ แม้ว่าแม่ะเียบไปแล้ว และนอาเสียเรื่อยน์ับเสียหวอ็มีแ่เสียลมาถัอ๊อิเน และเสียบี๊บๆที่ัเป็นระยะยาอุปร์อะไรสัอย่า Mum was laying in front of me, with an oxygen mask on her face. The young man opened the medics case and got the portable blood test device out to prick mum's finger. He looked at the result before writing something down on a form attached to a clipboard.

When he finished the phone, he looked more relaxed and pulled the seat down and sat next to me.

ันเพิ่มีโอาสไ้สัเุูเาแบบพินิพิาราเป็นรั้แร ันบอเาว่า ันโอเ "How are you?" he politely asked. He as so kind and he sounded like the hero in the film. I had a chance to have a good look at him for the first time. I told him I was okay.
"ุแม่อุไม่เป็นไรหรอนะ เี๋ยว็ถึโรพยาบาลแล้ว ผมโทรรัิวอเียที่โรพยาบาลไว้แล้ว เพราะว่าเรายุ่มา มีนไม่สบายหรือไม่็ประสบอุบัิเหุเยอะแยะในเวลาเียวัน นเรา้อัลำับวามสำั ุแม่อุ้อารหมอเป็นรีเร่่วน ันั้นทันทีที่เราไปถึโรพยาบาล เราะพาเธอเ้าไปพบหมอทันที แล้วเื่อเถอะว่าหมอเาะรวหาเอแหละว่ามีอะไรผิปิและะรัษาอย่าไร" "You mum will be alright, we will get to the hospital soon and I have already phoned to book a bed for your mum because we are very busy, really. There are so many people who are ill or in an accident in the same time and we have to prioritise it. Your mum needs to see the doctor urgently so as soon as we get to the hospital, we will take her in right away. The doctor will find out what's wrong with her and cure it, believe me."
ำพูสุภาพอ่อนโยนอเาทำให้ันรู้สึีึ้น และเลือในัวอันไหลู่่เมื่อรู้สึถึ้นแนอเาที่ระทบับหัวไหล่อันเวลาที่รถพยาบาลเอนไปมา ันไม่เยใล้ิับายหนุ่มนไหนมา่อน และเาเป็นายหนุ่มที่เป็นแมนริๆ ไม่ใ่แ่เพียหน้าาีอย่าเียว อะไรบาอย่าในัวเาทำให้ันระหนัว่าันเป็นผู้หิทุระเบียนิ้ว ผู้หิที่เปรียบเสมือนอไม้อันเป็นสิ่ล่อาล่อใอบรราแมลทั้หลาย หน้าอันร้อนผ่าวึ้นมาื้อๆ แล้ว็ละอายใที่เิมามีวามิบ้าๆ แบบนี้ะที่แม่ำลันอนไม่สบายอยู่บนเียเบื้อหน้า แ่ัน็ห้ามวามรู้สึวูบวาบในใไม่ไ้ แล้ว็นึึ้นมาไ้ว่าันลืมระเป๋าถืออัวเอไว้ที่บ้านุยาย นี่เป็นรั้แรที่ันไปไหน่อไหนโยไม่มีหวี ระ รีมทามือ และอุปร์เสริมสวยทั้หลายิัวไป้วย ันรู้สึแย่นราออมาโยไม่รู้ัว และุบุรุษพยาบาลเ้าใผิิว่าันยัไม่สบายใเรื่อแม่ His kind and gentle words made me feel better and my blood seemed to pump so fast when I noticed that his upper arm was touching my shoulder when the ambulance swaying. I had never been so close to any young man like that before and he was really a man, not only good looking but something about him made me realise that I was also a woman - a woman who was like a alluring flower which attracted insects. My face felt hot all of a sudden then I felt ashamed to have these crazy ideas while my mum was laying ill in front of me but I still couldn't help to get butterflies in my stomach. Then I remembered that I had left my hand bag at grandmother's. It was the first time I went out without my comb, mirror, hand cream and other beauty equipment which made me feel so bad, I gave a groan without notice it. The young paramedic misunderstood that I was still upset about mum.
"ทุอย่าะโอเริๆ นะรับ อย่าเป็นัวลไปเลย" เารีบหันมาปลอบ "เอาอย่านี้ ผมะให้เบอร์โทรศัพท์อผมะุไว้ ถ้าหาุ้อารวาม่วยเหลืออะไรละ็โทรหาผมไ้ทันทีเลย" "Everything will be okay, really. Please don't worry.", he comforted. "Okay, I will give you my number. If you need any help, you can call me any time."
เารีบีมุมระาษ แล้วหมายเลโทรศัพท์่อนส่ให้ัน He ripped the corner of the paper and wrote down his number on it before handing it to me.
"อบุ่ะ" ันระิบอายๆ แ่เสียอันฟัูแปล เหมือนไม่ใ่เสียอันเลย โีที่เาไม่ไ้ทำอะไรอย่าอื่นให้ัน้อเินอาย เา้มลมหยิบแลปท๊อปออมาาใ้เ้าอี้ แล้วปุ่มเปิเรื่อ "Thank you!" I whispered bashfully. My voice sounded strange as if it wasn't ever mine. Luckily he didn't do anything else that made me shy again. He bent down and got a lap-top from underneath the seat before pressing the button.
"ผมะ้อทำรายานประวัิสุภาพอุแม่อุ แ่ผมะโทรถึบูพาทีุ่แมุ่ทำประันสุภาพไว้เพื่อถุามรายละเอีย" เารายานอย่าเป็นานเป็นาร "อีไม่ถึสิบนาทีเรา็ะไปถึโรพยาบาลแล้ว" "I will have to do your mum's health records but I will ring BUPA, your mum health insurer for the details." he gave me a full report in a matter of fact way. "We will get to the hospital within ten minutes now."

It made me feel really good. I'd just realised the real different of being a Miss instead of Young Miss.

It was obvious that he didn't feel anything but I felt weird every time it happened. I asked myself if he could smell my perfume which I had carefully dabbed on myself this morning? had it scent faded away? Perhaps when he finished work and went out with friends his age, we would tell them he met the most beautiful girl he had ever seen and he was hoping she would call him because she was the girl he had always dreamed of all his life.

รถแล่นิแหลบหลีารรารในเมือให่้วยวามเร็ว เสียหวอทำให้ันรู้สึลื่นไส้ึ้นมา The ambulance was zigzagging the traffic in the big city at high speed. The loud siren made me feel sick.
"อีนานไหมะว่าะถึโรพยาบาล" ันถาม "Is it a long way to the hospital?" I asked.
"ไม่นานรับ" "No, not long."
แย่ริๆ ที่ะ้อมารู้สึลื่นไส้ อยาะอาเียร่อหน้าายหนุ่มที่เราสร้าภาพโรแมนิไว้ ันภาวนาอให้เราไปถึโรพยาบาล่อนที่ันะรู้สึแย่ไปว่านี้ It was terrible to feel sick and wanted to throw up in front of a man I romantically pictured myself with. I prayed to get to the hospital before I felt worse.

"Normally we ask you to sign when you get to the hospital but I reckon it won't hurt to do it now. We will be at the hospital in a few minutes and then we can take you to A&E right away, we don't have to queue."

แม้ว่าันอยาะนั่อยู่้าๆ เาให้นานว่านี้ แ่ัน็รู้สึโล่ใอย่าที่ไม่เยรู้สึมา่อนเมื่อเรามาถึโรพยาบาล ไม่ใ่แ่เพราะแม่ะไ้ปลอภัย แ่ารเินทาในรถพยาบาลนั้นริๆ แล้ว็ไม่ไ้โรแมนิเท่าไหร่เลย Even though, I'd love to be next to him for longer but I was relief when we got to the hospital. Not only for mum's safety but also because a journey in an ambulance wasn't actually that romantic, really.
