พนัานับรถบัสที่เรานั่มาาสนามบินเปิที่เ็บระเป๋าใ้ท้อรถ The bus driver which we took from the airport was opening the luggage compartment ันยืนระับเสื้อหนาวแล้วห่อไหล่ I stood, wrapping my jacket to the body and pulled up my shoulders มอเายระเป๋าเินทาใบให่ๆ I watched him carrying our big suitcases อเราออมาวาเรียันบนฟุบาท ูเหมือนว่าเาไม่สะทสะท้านอะไรับลมหนาวเลยสันิ and put them one after the other on the footpath. He didn't look as though he minded the cold wind one bit.
"เรียบร้อยแล้วรับุนาย" เาพู ลมที่พั้ออยู่ในหูอันยััยิ่ว่าเสียเาพูเสียอี
"All done now, Ma'am.", he said. His voice was fainter than the wind around my ears.
แม่ปัผมที่ลมพัระุยระายออาใบหน้า Mum brushed her windblown hair out of her face, พยายาม่มเสียไม่ให้สั่นเหมือนร่าาย trying to control her voice, not to let it trembling as her body was. มือล้วแบ์ห้าปอน์ออาระเป๋าเินแล้วยื่นให้พนัานับรถพร้อมับที่บออบุเา She took a five pounds note out of her purse and handed to the bus driver. เรามารู้ทีหลัว่าที่อัฤษเาไม่ำเป็น้อให้ทิปัน We found out later that they don't tip in England.
พนัานับรถูๆ อยู่หน่อยๆ แล้ว็รับเินเ้าระเป๋าาเ พูแ่เพียว่า The bus driver looked a little surprised but he took the money and put it in his trousers pocket, saying, "ยินีรับ" แล้ว็เินอ้อมลับไปึ้นรถทาประู้านนับ แล้วรถบัสันให่็่อยๆ เลื่อนัวออไป "Pleasure!", he walked around to the other side of the bus to get on the bus then the gigantic bus gradually drove away.
ประูโรแรมเปิออ แล้วายหนุ่มแ่เรื่อแบบพนัาน้อนรับรีบเินร้านลมแรมายัที่ที่เรายืนันอยู่ The hotel door then opened, a young man in uniform walked hurriedly against the wind towards us.
"ุนาย ุนายทาวาส..." เาพูะุะั พยายามอ่านนามสุลอเราาเศษระาษที่อยู่ในมืออย่าประหม่าๆ "Are you Mrs. Tavas...umm, Mrs. Tavas...", he stammered bashfully, trying to read what it was written on the piece of paper in his hand.
"ใ่่ะ" แม่รีบพู "Yes, I am.", Mum said at once.
เาูโล่ใึ้นมาทันที He looked suddenly relieved, แล้วพูับแม่้วยเสียัแ่ับเสียลม้วยท่าทีสุภาพอ่อนน้อมว่า then he spoke loudly to beat the sound of the wind in a polite manner. "เราัเรียมห้ออุและรอบรัวไว้เรียบร้อยแล้วรับ เพียแ่รับุแาพนัานที่เาน์เอร์ ผมะยระเป๋าเินทาึ้นไปให้เอ" "We have already prepared you and your family the room. Please, could you pick up the key from the reception?and I will carry all of the suitcases up to the room."
"ี่ะ อบุ" แม่ะโนลับ "Very well, thank you.", Mum seemed to shout back แล้วว้่ามือเบน น้อายวัยสิบวบอันให้ออเิน and grabbed my ten year old younger brother, Ben's hand to come with her.
ันเห็นพนัาน้อนรับำเลือมอเราแว่บหนึ่ I saw the boy glanced at us for a second, ่อนยัเศษระาษในมือใส่ระเป๋าเสื้อ before put that piece of paper in his shirt's pocket แล้วย่อัวลยระเป๋าเินทา and bent down to carry the suitcases เาเป็นเ็หนุ่ม แ่ว่าันไม่ี่ปี อายุไม่น่าะเินยี่สิบสาม สวมเรื่อแบบสีแล้ายับทหารรัษาาร์ที่เราเห็นเินลาระเวอยู่รอบๆ พระราวับัํิ้แฮมในลอนอน เพียแ่ว่าเาไม่ไ้สวมหมว และผมสีทออเาระายไปทุทิศทา้วยแรลม He was a young man, not much older than I was. He couldn't be more than twenty three. He wore a red uniform which looked a bit like what the guard outside Buckingham Palace wore, his gold hair flew about in the wind.

I had to wear school uniform but as soon as I finished my university I would never find jobs in uniforms or marry a man in uniform for sure.
"มิ้น์ เร็วเ้าเถอะ หนาวะเแย่อยู่แล้่ว" แม่หันมาเร่ และ่อนที่ันะออเิน าอัน็เิประสานเ้าับนายพนัาน้อนรับ เายิบาสีน้ำาลอ่อนให้ันอย่าล้อเลียน ทำให้ันรีบเมินหน้าแล้วรีบออเินามแม่และเบนไป "Mint, can you please hurry up? It's very cold.", Mum turned around and urged, before I could after her, my eyes met the receptionist's and he winked at me with his playful brown eyes, so I hurriedly looked away and quickly followed my mum and Ben.

Our room was on the top floor which we had to take a tiny little lift to get there. Mum said, next time she would rather climb the stairs because she wasn't sure about the security of a lift in such an old building. I'm sure it was safe, only no one wanted to get inside a very small and narrow old lift which hummed as if it would drop dead in any minute.
ันไมุ่้นเยับอะไรเ่าๆ โบร่ำโบรา We weren't used to anything old. เราเยไปเที่ยวี่ปุ่น ออสเรเลีย และอเมริา ที่ทุอย่าล้วนแ่ใหม่ ทันสมัยเป็นมันวับ We normally went on holiday to Japan, Australia and America where everything was new. โรแรม็มัะเป็นึใหม่ๆ ที่มีเรื่ออำนวยวามสะวทันสมัย ห้อ็ว้าวา สว่าไสว น่าื่นเ้น Their hotels usually were new and had modern accommodation and the rooms were spacious, bright and exciting. ห้อพัอเราในโรแรมแรน์วิลล์ไม่ไ้ทำให้รู้สึื่นเ้น แ่ทำให่้รู้สึพิศววยเสียมาว่า Our room in Granvilles Hotel didn't make us feel exciting but amazing เพราะทุสิ่ทุอย่าในห้อนั้นูเหมือนับว่ามันย้อนยุออมาาอี because everything in the room looked as though they came from the past. ไม่ว่าะเป็นภาพสีน้ำมันรูปแันอไม้สีูาในรอบอัลลอย์สีทอนาให่ For example, the gold alloy framed painting of a very colourful vast of flowers in oil ระอัลลอย์รูปไ่นาให่ที่แวนอยู่บนำแพเหนือเาผิที่เปลไฟำลัแลบเลียอยู่เหนือไม้ฟืนุ้นให่ๆ Big alloy oval shaped mirror that hung on the wall above of the well lit fireplace มีผ้าม่านำมะหยี่สีน้ำเินเ้มหนาหนั a pair of dark blue brocade โ๊ะเรื่อแป้ไม้มะฮอานีที่าโ๊ะโ้ออรลา dressing table of Mahogany wood which its legs bow in the middle ไลสุอห้อมีหน้า่าโ้บานให่ที่มอออไปเห็นวิวมัวๆ อทะเลและท้อฟ้าสีเทาว้าให่ทอยาวไปไลนสุลูหูลูา further at the end of the room, there was a big oriel window, overlooked the sea and big grey sky that seemed endless ทะเลับท้อฟ้านั้นมีสีเียวันนันไม่แน่ใว่าทะเลสิ้นสุรไหน หรือท้อฟ้าเริ่ม้นที่ใันแน่ the sea and the sky were in the same colour that we couldn't tell when the sea finished and when the sky started. มีที่นั่ิผนับุนวมโ้ไปามหน้า่า there was a seat with cushion fitted around the window และแันอไม้ส่อโวาอยู่รลาโ๊ะไม้สี่เหลี่ยมนาไม่ให่ไม่เล็ and a vast contained a big bunch of fresh flowers stood in the middle of a medium sized square wooden table.
ทุนลมือสำรวห้อพัทันที ะที่ันยืนมอไปรอบๆ ห้อทีู่เหมือนะเป็นห้อลา แม่เปิประูทา้าน้ายมือ ปราว่าเป็นห้อน้ำ เบนเปิประูอีบานที่อยู่ถัไปาห้อน้ำ และันเห็นระเป๋าเินทาอเราวาเรียันอยู่ที่ปลายเียสี่เสานาให่ที่อยู่ลาห้อ We started to snoop around the room immediately and as I was looking around the room in the middle, Mum opened the left door which appeared to be the bathroom. Ben opened another door next to the bathroom and I saw our suitcases were left there at the end of a big four poster bed in the middle of the room.
เบนส่เสียอุทานแล้วรึ้นไปนั่ย่มบนเียทันที "ูนี่สิ พี่มิ้น์ เียนี่ยอไปเลย เราึม่านลมาปิ แล้วสมมุิว่ามันเป็นบ้าน็ไ้ แม่รับ เบนนอนเียนี้ไ้เปล่ารับ เบนไม่เยนอนบนเียอย่าี้มา่อนเลยรับ" Ben exclaimed with excitement and went to sit, bouncing on the bed in a instant.
เบนเป็นนมีินนารี He was an imaginative boy.
แม่เินออมาาห้อน้ำ เ็มือให้แห้ับผ้าเ็มือแล้วเปิประูอีบานหนึ่ที่อยู่ทา้านวามือ เผยให้เห็นห้อนอนเล็ที่มีเียสอั้น Mum came out of the bathroom, drying her hands with the hand towel and opened another door on the right which turned out to be a little bedroom with a bunk bed.
"แม่ว่านี่น่าะเป็นห้ออเบนะพี่มิ้น์มาว่านะ๊ะ" แม่ว่า "I think this is more your and your sister's bedroom.", she said.
"โหย เียสอั้น" เบนอุทานเสียั รีบระโลาเียสี่เสาแล้ววิ่รไปยัเียสอั้น ่อนะปีนบันบันไั้นไปนอนแผ่บนเียั้นบน "Oh wow, a bunk bed!", Ben shouted and jumped off the four poster bed. He ran to the bunk bed and climbed up the top bunk, laying on his back.
"อย่าบอนะว่ามิ้น์้อนอนะนายเบน" ันบ่น หวัว่าแม่ะเปิประูบานไหนอีสับาน แล้วประาศว่านั่นือห้อนอนอัน ไม่มีเ็อายุสิบหย่าสิบเ็นไหนอยาะนอนเียเียวับน้อายอายุสิบวบ ถึแม้ะเป็นใน่วพัาอาาศ็เถอะ "Please don't tell me, I have to sleep in the same room with him.", I complained, hoping that Mum would open another door and announced to me that would be my bedroom. No sixteen going on to seventeen girl anywhere would want to sleep in the same room with a ten year old brother, not even when there were on holiday!
แ่ไม่มีห้ออื่นอีแล้ว และแม่บอว่า ถ้าหาันไม่อยานอนับนายเบน ัน็ะ้อไปนอนบนเียสี่เสาะแม่ แ่ัน็ไม่อยานอนในห้อนั้น เพราะมันแ่้วยเรื่อเรือนเ่าๆ สีทึ่มๆ บรรยาาศในวามรู้สึเหมือนเราอยู่ในปราสาทเ่าที่มีผีสิ ผีนโบราที่มีีวิอยู่เมื่อหลายร้อยปีมาแล้ว นโบราที่เยอาศัยอยู่ในีหลันี้ และอาะนอนายบนเียสี่เสานี้ But there was no other room and Mum said that if I didn't want to sleep with Ben, I would have to sleep in the four poster with her. I didn't want to sleep in that room because it was decorated with old furniture, made of dark woods which gave the atmosphere of being in an old haunted castle. Old, ancient spirits of people who once lived here hundreds of years ago. People who used to live in this building and perhaps some of them died in that four poster bed!
ิมาถึอนนี้ัน็รู้สึโล่ใที่อย่าน้อย็มีน้อายเป็นเพื่อนนอน Thinking about ghosts made me feel better about having my brother as a company. ันบอับัวเอว่าันไม่ไ้ลัวผี I kept telling myself that I wasn't scared of ghosts เพราะพ่อสอนเสมอว่า วามหวาลัวนั้นเป็นินนาารประเภทลบที่าารวบุมเท่านั้นเอ because my dad had always taught us not to give in to irrational fear, the fear that was a negative, an uncontrolled of imagination. ันั้นเราะ้อรู้ัวบุมินนาารอเราให้เป็นไปในทาบว So, we had to learn to control our imagination to stay positive. พ่ออันเป็นนัวิเราะห์ทาิที่มีื่อเสียที่สุในประเทศไทย ารา นัร้อ และนมีื่อเสียอประเทศ่า็มาอำแนะนำาพ่อให้พ่อ่วยันทั้นั้น แ่ว่าสภาพอาาศอึมรึมสีเทาเศร้าหมอภายนอ และบรรยาาศเ่าๆ ย้อนยุอโรแรม ทำให้ันอินนาารอะไรเรื่อยเปื่อยในทาลบไม่ไ้ My dad was the most famous psychotherapist in the country who gave counselling to many celebrities. But the sad, depressing atmosphere outside combined with the back in time sort of atmosphere in the hotel made it hard not to be negative.
"เอาล่ะ" แม่ว่า แล้วบมือเ้า้วยันอย่าที่แม่อบทำเวลาอยู่หน้าั้นเรียน แม่เป็นอาารย์สอนวิาวรรรรมภาษาอัฤษในมหาวิทยาลัย "ที่หลับที่นอนลัวันแล้วหรือยั" เธอหันมามอัน้วยสายาเรียร้อำอบ ันเลยพยัหน้า แล้วบอแม่ว่าันะนอนในห้อเล็ับเบน "ั้นแม่ะอาบน้ำแล้ว็ะรื้อระเป๋า ัเสื้อผ้าให้เ้าที่เ้าทา อย่าลืมว่าแม่อห้อพัไว้อาทิย์นึ ันั้นเราวระั้าวอให้เป็นระเบียบเรียบร้อย" "Okay," Mum said, clapping her hands together like the way she often did in front of the class, Mum was a lecturer in English literature in University. "Are we all sorted? Have you decided where to sleep?" she turned to me, looking for an answer. I nodded and told Mum that I would sleep in the small bedroom with Ben. "So, I will have a bath and unpack. Don't forget that I've booked this room for a week so we'd better to get organised."
เรา้นพบว่าในู้ไม้ิฝาผนัมีู้เย็นนาเล็บรรุนมในวแ้วที่ฝาเป็นแผ่นโลหะ และ๊อโแล้่อนอยู่ ในู้ไม้้านบนเหนือึ้นไปมีา้มน้ำเรามิและุน้ำาลายอไม้ พร้อมับโถบรรุถุาและาแฟสำเร็รูป We found a small fridge inside a wall cupboard, it had a bottle of milk with silver top and bars of chocolate inside. There were a ceramic kettle and a vintage tea set on the top shelf.
เบนพบห่อนมที่ินแล้วบอว่าอร่อยี ราเหมือนนมะเนยผสมัน แม่เ้าไปอาบน้ำในห้อน้ำ (มีประูเปิรเ้าไปในห้อน้ำถัาห้อนอนอแม่) หลัาแม่เปิน้ำลในอ่าอาบน้ำเสียัู่ๆ อยู่พัหนึ่็เียบเสียไป Ben found some delicious biscuits which tasted like the mixture of milk and butter. Mum was having a bath in the en-suite bathroom. She went quiet after running the bath.
ันเอ็อยาะอาบน้ำสระผมะายไป นั่เรื่อบินมาั้เป็นสิบั่วโม แล้ว็ยั้อนั่รถบัสาสนามบินมาอี้้สามสี่ั่วโม แถมอนอยู่บนเรื่อบินัน็แทบะไม่ไ้นอน มอัวเอในภาพสะท้อนบนระเหนือเาผิ็เห็นว่าูไม่ืเลย หน้าาอิโรย ทรุโทรม ผมเผ้ายุ่เหยิเาะันเป็น้อน ถ้าเพื่อนอันที่รุเทพฯ มาเห็นสารรูปอันอนนี้เ้าล่ะ้อ ้อถูเพื่อนล้อไปอีนาน I wanted to have a bath and wash my hair as well! We were on the plane for more than ten hours then we sat in the bus from the airport for another three or four hours. Worst of all, I hardly slept on the plane. The reflection of myself in the mirror above the fireplace was horrendous! I looked so tired, my hair was all tangled up. Only if my friends in Bangkok saw me at this state, they would not stop teasing me for a long, long time.
ฝนเริ่มลเม็ เป็นละออละเอียปลิวระทบระหน้า่าเป็นฝ้า ทำให้มอเห็นวิว้านนอเป็นเพียภาพเบลอสีเทา It started to rain, very fine droplets clouded the window and made the view outside all grey and blurry.
เบน้นพบโทรทัศน์ที่อยู่ในู้ไม้มะฮอานีในห้อนอนให่ Ben discovered a television hidden in a Mahogany cupboard in the big bedroom อนนี้็เลยนอนเอเนูโทรทัศน์อยู่บนเียสี่เสา So he was watching it, laying comfortably on the four poster bed ันลาระเป๋าเินทาไปที่ห้อนอนอัวเอ as I dragged my suitcase to my bedroom ่อนะทำารรื้อระเป๋า and unpacked แล้วัเสื้อผ้าและ้าวอเรื่อใ้อื่นๆ ให้เ้าที่เาทา then put my clothes and things away nicely รู้สึโล่ใริๆ ที่เรื่อเป่าผมไม่ไ้แหัเสียหาย และปลัํแปลสามาที่เรียมเอามาารุเทพฯ ็ใ้ไ้ไม่มีปัหา I was so relieved that my hair dryer wasn't broken and the three pronged adapter I brought with me from Bangkok worked fine.
ไม่ใ่แ่ันไม่พอใที่้อนอนห้อเียวับเบนเท่านั้น Not only I wasn't happy, having to sleep in the same room with Ben ันไม่พอใที่้อเินทามาประเทศอัฤษ้วย but I wasn't pleased to have to travel to England. ทันทีที่แม่บอว่าเราะ้อมาที่นี่ในอนปิเทอมหน้าร้อน As soon as Mum told us that we had to spend our summer holiday here แทนที่ะไ้ไปับเพื่อนๆ ในลุ่มที่เาไปเ้า่ายเรียนภาษาอัฤษับที่ประเทศออสเรเลียบ้า อเมริาบ้า instead of flying off with my friends to English camp in Australia or America ล้วนแล้วแ่น่าสนใว่าารเินทามายัเมือเ่าๆ ทาภาะวันออออัฤษที่บอใรไป็ไม่มีใรรู้ั which was far more interesting than coming to an old seaside town in the east of England where no one had ever heard of, มันน่าเบื่อ was so boring ไม่เห็นะมีอะไรน่าสนใเลยสันิ nothing was interesting at all และแม้ว่าะทำารประท้วเท่าไร็ไม่ประสบวามสำเร็ พ่อยืนยันว่าัน้อทำัวเป็นเพื่อนร่วมทาอแม่ เพราะพ่อะ้อไปเ้าประุมและเ้าอร์สอะไรสัอย่าที่ประเทศี่ปุ่นเป็นเวลาเือบเือน Although I tried to protest but without success. Dad confirmed that I had to be a company to Mum because he had to go for some training course in Japan for nearly a month!
"มิ้น์เป็นลูสาวนโอพ่อ ถึเวลาทำัวเป็นพี่ให่ไปูแลน้อ และเป็นเพื่อนร่วมทาที่ีอแม่" พ่อบอ "You are the eldest daughter and it's about time you act like a big sister, looking after your brother and be a good company to your mum.", he said.ันไม่เยไ้ยินพ่อพูับัน้วยน้ำเสียึัริัแบบนี้มา่อน ันึไ้แ่นิ่และฟั I had never heard Dad speak in that kind of serious tone before so I could only be quiet and listen. "พ่อไปเป็นเพื่อนแม่เาไม่ไ้ มิ้น์็รู้ว่าเพราะอะไร แล้วมิ้น์็รู้้วยว่าแม่เาไม่่อยสบาย ั้แุ่าไม่สบายเนี่ย สุภาพอุแม่็ทรุโทรมามไป้วย แล้วารไปอัฤษรั้นี้็สำั่อแม่มา มิ้น์็รู้ พ่ออให้มิ้น์ไปูและแม่ะน้อให้พ่อ้วย ทำที่พ่ออไ้ใ่ไหมล่ะลู" "I can't come with Mum this time and you know well why. You also know that your mum hasn't been well since granddad is sick, Mum's health is affected by it. This trip to England is very important to her, you know that so I'm asking you to look after Mum and Ben for me, can you do what I ask?"
