    L1: Paantu.

    V : Paan— pa- ปลาทู??

L2 : Paantu. Our festival name is Paantu. P-A-A-N-T-U. Paantu.

V : Paantu... and what is it about?

L2 : It’s for to blessed you a good luck and to keep you away from evil spirits. The Noro priestess will come to bless you! Here, She maybe doesn’t look like , but she is also one of the Noro priestess of our town. *ผายมือไปทางL1*

V : PRIESTESS!? With that kind of dress!?

L1 : My dress isn’t THAT bad! It’s natural. SUPER NATURAL!

V : well, it TOO natural ! What’s up with the dress? What does it made of?

L2 : It made of leaves and mud. We smear the mud on our head and body , and put the leaves on! Done! Perfect!

V : Why would you do that? I mean, It’s MUD.

    L1 : It’s not just MUD! it’s holy mud!

V: holy? Uh... is this some kind of faith I don’t know? By the way, what is that mask? Why are you wearing it.

L2 : Why? I’m glad you ask. Wanna hear some old story? It will not be so long, I promise.

    V : Uh... it’s fine. I guess.

L2 : actually “Paantu” is a name of the ‘ evil spirits ‘. They have strange body cover with mud and leaves. These spirits have intention to scare people , especially the children. So, we are dressing up like Paantu. and put on the wooden mask on our face. Mean to spread good luck and scare away evil spirits.

V : woah. These mask made of wood? How does it look like! Can I have look at it!?

    L1 : yeah! *ยื่นหน้ากาก*

    V : *รับหน้ากาก จดๆจ้องๆหน้ากากในมือ*

L2 : It has large forehead , small eyes , thin mouth and the most important thing. A clam-looking face!

V : oh... And what do you do in the festival?

L2 : We, I mean people in those Paantu dress , are going to spread the mud onto newly built and children. Actually we spread the mud on EVERYTHING. The visitor too, of course.

V : what the meaning of it? To blessing?

    L1 : you’re right!

L2 : we are smearing mud to bless people for good luck. Anything that is smeared will has a good luck on it! But in some villages the Paantu will chasing the small children, making them cry, those who are avoiding having their faces smeared with mud.

V : wow.... so that why you are smearing mud on me.

L1 : To blessed you a good luck!

V : oh! Uh... who is going to dress like Paantu? Anyone?

L2 : It can be anyone. But mostly our Noro priestesses will do! It’s like, you know, their duty is to scare away the bad thing and bring up good things. Oh! And when they spread the mud they’ll shout “Hoi Hoi” like Santa Claus!

V : That sounds nice! I’m starting to love this festival now! where is the festival celebrate? Just here?

L2 : yeah, unfortunately it only celebrates here. It’s a really rare festival. You’re very lucky to join it.

V : why does it so rare?

    L1 : well... it a messy festival.

L2 : lots of visitor complaints about how messy and dirty it is. Well, it’s true ‘cause you have to smear the mud. There no way it will end up clean. You don’t like it at first too, don’t you? The festival used to celebrate all over Okinawa, but now it celebrates just only in a few villages like Miyako and Ishigami.

V : how sad... when does the festival celebrate?

L1 : On the first week of October.

    V : what’s date?

L2 : the date of festival is changing every year. But still in the first week of October.

V : how long is it?

L2 : We usually celebrates it for two days. This is our last day of the festival.

V : Really!? Can I come again next year? I want to enjoy it longer than this!

    L1 : sure.

L2 : hey. *หันไปคุยกับL1* the Other Noro priestesses are there! You should hurry up and regroup with them!

    L1 : Oh! R-right! Bye now, visitor!

V : Wait! Before you go, Can We take a photo please?

    L2 : Great idea!

    *ถ่ายรูป*

L2 : The police station is there I’m sure they can help you with the direction. Time to say good bye now. See ya!

V : Bye! I’ll come to visit you again I swear! And I will join the Paantu festival next year too!
