    The Newborn Star

    ลำดับตอนที่ #2 : A Girl's Life

    • อัปเดตล่าสุด 2 มี.ค. 59

"My name is Mortia Scarlet. I am sixteen years old. I live in Eternia, Scone Islands. Since I was born on the island, I am a true Sconian. Currently, I am study in Blaze program, offensive magic of Eternal Flame Magical School. I also work as an Evil Hunter. As you know, I hunt down evil beings and exterminate them. I am currently in "The Newborn Star" rank. But someday, I will be the best hunter ever! I do mean it!"

The girl wearing a robe with red stripes and a large ribbon over it said proudly as she introduces herself to her new teacher. Everyone in class looked at her and showed signs of dislike except very few. At the corner of the room was one, and another was next to her. At the corner was a girl with ridiculously long ribbon attached to her hair band. The other was Terro, a quiet boy who was also a hunter. They looked at her worriedly and sighed. Seeing that Mortia may have a bad relationship with others in class, the teacher asked her,

"Miss Scarlet, do you have any friends?"

The question stunned her a bit. She glanced over to her friend and the girl at the corner then secretly sighed and replied,

    "Yes I do"

The teacher looked at her and said

"I see then. Try to not bite others much. You need to work with them"

"As if I need to" Mortia thought to herself then looked away from the teacher, but not before giving him a short glare of disagreement. She hates working with others. Usually because they don't like how she thinks. Soon after, the classmates who witnessed that started to chat with their friends about the matter. It appeared that most students dislike her as much as she dislike them. It continued for a while until the class was over. As the teacher dismissed the students, they grouped with their friends and moved out of the room. Mortia as well, joined with her friends in which there was only two. Terro and that girl with long ribbon. Terro wears robe with stripe of the same color as hers. The girl however, has yellow stripes. Mortia looked at her and asked,

"Hey Alice, what's your next class?"

She asked in a very friendly manner and with a smile. Much different from earlier where she only grinned with arrogance. It must be because she felt comfortable with her. The other girl looked at her and replied,

"It's the same as you two again. The potion class"

Alice replied with a happy voice. Obviously, she is a good friend of Mortia's. Mortia then looked at the clock that happened to be on the wall there and said to the two.

"Blaze and Maple programs sure have a lot of matching classes today. Anyway, it's almost time, let's go!"

As usual, Mortia left almost no time for others to say anything while she speaks. The other two nodded and they all walked towards their next classroom.

    "She's always in a rush..."

Said Terro while walking. He sighed, but smiled. Being with her all the time made him used to it.

Suddenly, on the way, they came across a group of tall girls. The tall ones, especially, the one who seemed to be the leader, giggled at them in a pity. Morita started feeling that those girls are going to pick on her and the rage started to boil inside her. While others ignored them, Mortia quickly turned to them and yelled with great anger.

"What the bloody hell are you laughing at?!"

They kept giggling as they look at her. The tallest one whose name tag says Patricia walked to Mortia and slowly put her hand on her head.

"My my, just look at how short the greatest-hunter wannabe is. Not to mention your chest is as flat as a wooden board! Also, using a ribbon to cover it doesn't help by one bit. Everyone can see that!"

Finishing her sentences, she laughed. Mortia face clearly showed that she was filled with rage.

"How dare you calling me short!? This is unacceptable!!"

At the moment, her mind is clouded with rage and hate. She reached under her skirt and pulled out a kitchen knife in a blink of an eye then pointed it at the tall girl with intentions of threatening her and possibly, killing her.

"Patricia! How dare you rotten uncultured walking stick comment on my height!?"

Her voice reached the loudest point she can ever make. No sooner had she held her knife over her than her friends noticed and quickly locked her arms before she could attack with the knife. Alice quickly spoke to her

"Wait Mortia! I'm sure you don't want to end up as a killer!"
"I don't care! I've killed so bloody many evil beings! What's the deal with just one more human!?"

She struggled strongly to break free from her friend's locks. As she is the physically strongest out of them three, she almost broke free after few tries. Seeing that, Terro quickly said to her.

"No Mortia... killing those things are legal, but killing humans are illegal...well just saying... I don't want you to get into trouble..."

His words made a sudden stop for her. She dropped her intentions of killing and looked at him. Though, she didn't entirely want to let the tall enemy go. Pouted and crossed her arms, she replied

    "I hate laws..."
"Please Mortia, don't become a criminal"
    "...."

It worked well as it appears. Mortia quieted down and looked at Patricia. Patricia laughed loudly as she saw Mortia unable to do anything. She patted her lightly and said

"Aww miss hunter got held down by her friends. What a beautiful scene~"

Then, she walked started to walk away, but not before turning to her once again and said

"Oh, but I think you're more suiting to be a criminal rather than a hunter!"

Afterwards, the group of tall girls quickly departed from the spot, and like Patricia, laughing loudly. The three were left together alone once again. Alice and Terro sighed then released Mortia. Mortia took a very deep breath and sighed, turned to the two, and yelled at them.

"You know! I hate anyone commenting my height! I don't care about my breast size, but height insulting is unacceptable!"
"Oh Mortia, just don't mind them! They can only say things and.. what's so bad being short?"
    "I agree with Alice..."
"Oh not you too Terro. Didn't you say you will always make me feel better!?"
"Well...I don't want you to become a criminal. You know, you have a bright future if you don't ruin it..., just saying"
"Yeah Mortia, don't you want to be the best hunter? Don't be the best criminal instead!"
    "Ugh..."

"These two know me too well.."

Mortia sighed once again. Though she did listened to her friends' words, she did not feel any better at all. She looked at her knife and returned it to its place.

    "I shall punish them later..."

Mortia thought as she gave her friend a fake smile and walked away from the spot in order that they wouldn't be late for the upcoming class. She was still clouded with certain amount of anger, however.

Hours passed, she didn't feel any better and when the school was over, she quickly departed. Before going home, she walked to a small lake near the school. Lakes are always her favorite place to relax, especially ones far from the rushing and chaotic environments usually found in modern human cities and towns. Frantic lives often cause stress, it wasn't any different for her. She came here today both for relaxing and for her work. To herself, she said

"That damned Patricia....Someday, I'll get her!"

Her rage was still high. She couldn't hold it much and had the need to let it out with her favorite way... killing. But she couldn't find anything earlier. She instead, tried to let it out by kicking small pebbles. And so, she found one, then immediately kicked it into the bushes area. As soon as she finished, sounds of rustling leaves from the bush nearby can be heard. Immediately, she sensed the presence of something. Mortia was a bit surprised, yet happy at the same time. She didn't expect anything to be behind the bushes but it would be a good thing to kill. It might even be the reported monster she had been looking for since few days ago. She looked to that way, took out her knife and once more, a sinister grin. She felt that it would be a great chance to let out her frustration she had today. She looked to the direction and touched her knife then said

    "Come here fishy fishy~"

She said to the whatever that is hiding behind the bush with creepiest voice she can made. If anyone were there, they would say that she sounded like a psychopath. She apparently, guessed that it was a fish from what she could sense and her thoughts of it being what she had been looking for. However, there was no response from the bush. Mortia knew that there is definitely something behind but it just scared of her...or at least that is what she thought. Thus, a knife was thrown. Suddenly, a sort of aquatic creature with arms, legs, and fins jumped out of the bush. It did look like a fish, just as Mortia thought. Because she attacked it first, it would definitely fight back. That however, only made her more eager to kill it. They stared at each other for one full minute before Mortia made another move.

Two knives, one thrown, three slashes and jump strike. It was all done in a quick succession. Her attacks were too fast for the creature to defend. However, right when she stopped, it casted magic and blast a forceful stream of water at her. Mortia was thrown back and almost into the lake by the said attack.

"Water spell huh? This is getting more fun!"

She thought to herself and raised her right hand up then point it at the creature.

    "Starlight Ray!"

She said her spell name in hear mind as a thin beam of magical light diagonally crashed into it from the sky. It appeared to have done quite a lot of damage to the fish creature.. It collapsed for a moment but right when it started to get up, all it can see was knives-shaped lights moving towards it. It was Mortia's spell of "Glowing Knives". A moment later, knives disappeared with a tiny sparkle for each but not before all of them hit the target.  It survived, but in a flash, it received a quick slash from Mortia's knife. The slash killed it instantly. She then crouched and cut one of its fin, just like how she cut the horn of the Hornpent yesterday.

“And that, is my 72nd kill! Thank you for watching!”

Mortia shouted loudly even though no one was watching. No one at all. It was all just to boost her own confidence, and possibly, arrogance. She took out a notebook and registered the fish creature she just killed into her list. The Hornpent yesterday was also in the list. It was just before the today's creature. Suddenly, she thought that it would have been better if her friends and enemies were here to see her in action.

"I wish they were here.. especially Terro. Oh well.."
"I wish he was here to see how good I am.. only him seem to accept it"

Just then, her cross-shaped pendant-like item made a noise. She took it out and pressed a button on its behind then a rectangular screen was projected into the air in front of her right after. Apparently, her cross accessory was actually a computer. Moreover, it has hologram technology. She looked at it then started tapping on the screen, here and there. Then, she accessed the internet with a browser in her computer. Although she was far from the nearest town and her school, the internet speed here was extremely fast. She needed to wait no longer than ten seconds to load a page. She accessed the site titled as MAEH Official Site and typed up her hunting report then submitted it. Unlike when she was with her friends however, she never lie in her reports. Sometimes she didn't include certain details however. This time, she didn't include that she was actually venting out her frustration rather than properly fighting.

After she submitted the report, she turned around and look at the setting sun.

    "I should go home"

She thought. However, no sooner had she thought that than someone called her. She sighed and quickly tapped the screen to receive the call. She wasn't so happy with the sudden call however.

"Hello Mortia! I just received a message from your teacher!"

It was Alice, the only person who always make video calls to her, every single time. If it was Terro, he would do a simple and short voice call, or even text chat instead.

"Which teacher? Make it quick too! I've just finished my hunter work and I haven't even rested yet!"
"It's from Teacher Delia, your Math teacher. She told me that you haven't sent your homework yet"
"Can I postpone it again? I haven't done Umiyama Sensei's homework. It's due tomorrow!"
"Oh Mortia! You're going to fail this subject if you keep being like this, but hey, up to you? It's your choice"
"Meh, as if I care. Speaking of which.. what about you hm? Have you done your History homework yet, Miss Memoriana~?"
"You bet I haven't! And I never will, haha~! My wonderland needs me!"
"Heh.. okay then, have fun. See you later"

Mortia quickly ended the call before Alice could reply. She feared that she would drag her into her nonsensical story and then she wouldn't be able to do her homework at all. With that, she rushed home. Upon reaching, she quickly opened and closed the front door and at the same time, shouting,

    "Grandma! Fish and chips!"

Then, she grabbed a cup and a tea bag, poured some hot water into it and made herself a tea. Afterwards, she ran upstairs and into her room. It was so so fast that her grandmother who was in the kitchen couldn't even see her coming home.

After about two hours of headaches and tea, Mortia finally finished her homework. She did do her Math homework after all. Despite saying that she doesn't care, she actually feared of failing any subject. It wouldn't matter much to her as she already is an Evil Hunter, but sudden thought of what if she was retired or became incapable of being a hunter. She had to keep her grades in acceptable level. She closed her notebooks and leaned on her chair a bit. Sighing and feeling much more relaxed than earlier. Then, she picked up her teacup and went downstairs. Her grandmother was waiting for her with a very warm smile...and Mortia's favorite food, fish and chips. She smiled widely back and went to hug her grandmother as she pet her.

"My little Mortia, you look worn out. You should eat and have a nice rest"

The old woman spoke to her as she was being petted. She looked at her and replied

"Okay grandma~. I shall eat and rest, my day have been long and tiring! Oh, but if you need anything, I will help! Just call me~ "

They then sat down on the table. Mortia ate her dinner while her grandmother watched her with the most caring look she has ever seen. All the time she was with her grandmother, she was smiling just like normal kids. At the present, the place in which she feels most happy is probably her home where she could rest from her tiring school and work as well as staying with the kindest person she ever knew..and her lovely pet cat. Speaking of cat... Mortia suddenly felt a nudging on her feet followed by a meow. As she already finished eating, she pushed her plates aside and picked it up from under the table. It was a male white Persian cat. Sort of fat, if touched.

    "Hello Furball!"

Furball was its name. Mortia gave the name to it since it was young. She started to hug and cuddle him. She let out some of her thoughts which consist of only "Furball is so cute~!" or "I love Furball!" at the time as low mumbling. The cat doesn't seem to be very amused though. Soon after, it replied with a meow and kicked her, then walked into the kitchen.

    "Oh..."
    "...."
"I will go to sleep then, good night grandma~!"

She said first to herself, then to her grandmother. Not only she felt rejected by her cat, she also started to feel sleepy. Thus, she decided to go to bed. Before she go, she gave her grandmother another hug and she said to her,

"Sweet dreams Mortia. May fortune be with you"

Then, followed by a kiss on her forehead. Mortia smiled with great happiness and went to clean herself, changed into her sleepwear and lay on her bed.

"Tomorrow is going to be a nice day!"

She said to herself as she gets ready to sleep. But suddenly...an ominous cold wind blew in from the window with a mysterious voice saying

"At long last.... you finally return...keh keh keh"

The laugh at the end of the voice's word was so uncomfortable. It creeped her out. Mortia, with her curiosity and awful feeling, opened the window and looked into the direction that the wind and voice came from, but only to find nothing...
