(CNN) -- Libyan fighters said Wednesday they have taken control of the last holdout of Moammar Gadhafi loyalists in his hometown of Sirte.
National Transitional Council fighters said they were still battling pockets of resistance in that district of the city, but they were in control of the district.
The council has said it will officially declare Libya liberated when Sirte falls.
The National Transitional Council have said they had met strong resistance in Sirte, east of the capital, Tripoli, on the Mediterranean coast.. Most residents have abandoned Sirte after a month of fierce battles. Revolutionary forces have fought Gadhafi loyalists street by street, cornering the last vestiges of the old regime to that last district.
