ลำดับตอนที่ #2 : Adduction and Abduction
Chapter 2 - Adduction and Abduction
[Alex]
I had always been a creature of habit. Each day followed a meticulously planned routine, much like the well-balanced meals I recommended to my clients. As a nutritionist, it was my job to guide others toward healthier lives, and I practiced what I preached. My clients trusted me to provide them with the knowledge and guidance they needed to lead healthier lives, and I took that responsibility seriously.
The morning began like any other. I woke up at the same time, prepared my usual high-protein breakfast, and leisurely walked to work. Who needs pollution-producing cars when you can exercise your leg muscles along your way to work?
And let’s not forget the bonus – free vitamin D courtesy of the gentle dawn. It was almost like the universe’s way of saying, “Hey, Alex, here’s your daily dose of sunshine without the harmful UV rays.” I couldn’t resist this guilt-free temptation even if I tried.
As the day wore on, I couldn’t shake the lingering feeling of unease that the prophecy from the ancient tome had left me with. The words, “A Healer’s child under Scorpio’s care, bestowed upon a gift with none compare; bear the child an inevitable curse of immortality with no reverse,” echoed in my mind like an unsolved riddle. Now, I must admit, although being a bookworm, I had always been more of a Sudoku kind of guy who loved to solve the problem right at its core than an evasive riddle enthusiast.
After wrapping up my last client session for the day, I decided to hit the gym, my sanctuary from the chaos of the world. Leg day, my favorite. I pushed myself harder with each squat and lunge, the burn in my muscles a welcome distraction from the enigmatic words of the prophecy. My quadriceps and glutes should thank me now.
And speaking of muscles, let me just digress for a moment and say that squats are like life’s challenges. You keep pushing down, and just when you think you can’t go any lower, you bounce back up. The burn, the sweat, the triumphant feeling of standing back up—it’s all worth it.
Anyway, I moved on to the adduction and abduction machines to give my hip adductors and abductors a good workout. These are the underappreciated muscles that bring your thighs together and take them apart.
Now, if you’re wondering why I know all these muscle names, it’s not because I have some fancy degree in anatomy (well, I do, but that’s not the point) . It’s because my clients, bless their souls, have knees that sound like a bowl of crispy breakfast cereals when they walk. That’s right, snap, crackle, pop. It’s like having a personal percussion section everywhere you go.
And how does it feel? Well, imagine having tiny gremlins sneak into your joints and start tap-dancing when you least expect it. So, you end up with knee pain, and suddenly, you’re walking around like a crab with a sore leg. Ouch.
I swear, PFPS (Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome) is a real enemy of a happy life. Scout’s honor! It’s the result of sitting too long or, heaven forbid, walking downstairs too much, or just generally having knees that think they’re older than the rest of your body. Who wants PFPS for free? No, thanks.
Now, back to where we left off. Time slipped away, and before I knew it, the gym was closing. Gathering my things, I headed out into the deserted night street, illuminated only by the soft glow of streetlights. As I walked alone, a creeping sensation of being watched washed over me, raising the hairs on the back of my neck.
I quickened my pace, my heart pounding. Something wasn’t right. I reached for my phone, intending to call one of my close friends who owned an EV for an eco-friendly lift home, but before I could dial, a shadowy figure emerged from an alleyway, blocking my path.
My muscles tensed as I took in the menacing presence before me. The figure was cloaked in darkness, their features obscured. Fear gripped me, but I was no helpless victim. Years of discipline and fitness had honed my instincts, and I was ready to fight if necessary.
“Who are you?” I demanded, my voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through my veins.
The figure didn’t respond. Instead, more shadows emerged from the darkness surrounding me. It was a trap, and I had walked right into it.
In a flash, they closed in, their hands reaching for me. My heart raced, but my determination surged. I fought back with every ounce of strength, but their numbers were overwhelming. In moments, I was subdued, my strength no match for theirs.
As they restrained me with a rope, I wondered who these people were and what they wanted. The prophecy’s words echoed once more in my mind, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that this abduction was somehow connected to the mysterious forces that had begun to stir in my life.
Desperation flooded my veins as they led me down a series of dimly lit alleyways, away from the main street. Panic threatened to consume me, but I knew I had to stay composed. If I was going to get out of this alive, I needed to find an opportunity to escape.
We reached a narrow alley, its entrance shrouded in shadows. I just realized that the knots on my wrists are loosely tied, so I could shake the rope off easily. With every ounce of willpower, I summoned a burst of strength, breaking free from their grasp and sprinting into the alley.
My heart pounded in my chest as I navigated the labyrinthine passages, my pursuers hot on my heels. This is definitely not the abduction a gym-goer is looking forward to, my sense of humor just woke up from its slumber.
Anyway, the shouts and the sound of my abductors’ footsteps echoed off the narrow walls. I raced to find a way out, my body and mind in overdrive.
Finally, I stumbled upon a rusty fire escape ladder hanging precariously from the adjacent building. Without a second thought, I leaped for it, my fingers just barely catching the rungs. I climbed with the desperation of a cornered animal, my muscles burning with exertion. The ladder groaned under my weight, threatening to give way at any moment.
I reached the roof just as my pursuers reached the dead end below. Breathing heavily, I crouched behind a ventilation unit, praying they hadn’t seen me. The tension in the air was palpable as they scanned the lower rooftops, their hushed voices carrying on the night breeze.
“Where did he go?” one of them muttered, frustration filling his words.
“He can’t have just vanished,” another replied, equally agitated.
I held my breath, willing them to give up the search. Minutes passed like hours, and finally, I heard them retreating, their footsteps fading into the distance.
I waited a while longer, my heart still racing, before cautiously peering over the edge of the rooftop. They were gone, but I knew I couldn’t stay there. I had to figure out who these people were and why they had come after me.
With no other options, I made my way to the nearest payphone and called the police. I reported the attempted abduction but could only provide them with little information about my assailants. I had no idea who the hooded figures were. What if they worked for the governments? If so, then my information and location shouldn’t be revealed. As I hung up the phone, some of the police on the other end were yelling something like “prank calls”, so I guess I was on my own here.
There’s a sinking feeling that this was just the beginning of a much larger mystery, one that had entangled me in its web. I strongly doubt that the prophecy had somehow led these mysterious people to me. The words of the ancient tome had hinted at an “inevitable curse of immortality” and I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was being pulled into something far beyond my understanding.
With a heavy heart and a growing sense of foreboding, I knew that my journey into the unknown had only just begun.
