      CLOSURE

It is nine in the morning and I, Robert Kelly, a secretary to Mr. Jonathan Holt of Benson Holt, am already late for partners meeting, it is my turn to take the minutes. I spent last night proofreading a contract for my boss, fell asleep around two and woke up late.

I pay a fare, get off a taxi, and run to the firm with my hands full of papers. I bump into a guy but couldn’t care less to look at him just apologize and enter the building.

I look for my ID card which I am sure I was holding it before get off the car.

“I’m so sorry. I think I forgot my ID.” I talk to a security guy that recognizes my face and let me pass.

“Mr. Holt is waiting for you.” The security informs. I know exactly what I am going to face when the elevator door slides open at 19th floor.

Mr. Jonathan Holt, senior partner of Benson Holt, is standing in front of the elevator with his brand name suit and a crooked smile.

      “I am...”

“Save it.” His voice comes out sharp, does not let me apologize. I know him since I’ve been working with him for five years. He is upset but I’m not so sure it’s because of me.

“I assume that the meeting didn’t go well.” We are almost the same built and height, somehow he manages to walk faster than me. I try to catch up with him.

“Partners meeting is not what I concern right now, Rob. It’s about the contract.”

“So you’re not mad that I’m late.”

“I can punish you later.” He smirks before walks into his office that I hold the door for.

Jonathan’s office is on the left side, its size twice or maybe triple my apartment. It has massive floor to ceiling windows that shows the landscape of New York City. His office desk is on the left side, neat and tidy because I take care of it every day. Jonathan is a fan of baseball everyone who comes to his office can see signed balls display on bookshelves. All the furniture in this office is modern design and match with the wallpaper.

He sits on revolving chair, opens his laptop and makes a face that we all know not-to-displease him. I sit across him handing the contract that’s all set for this eleven o’clock meeting.

“You can trash that. We don’t have a deal.”

      “What? Why?”

“He changed his mind. Now get me my associate and...”

“Black coffee. I'm on it.” He takes black when he’s stressed.

I walk out and call Steven Walter, get Jonathan his coffee then settle myself in the chair.
My desk is opposite Jonathan’s office so I can see everyone who wants to meet him.

I watch my boss and Steven discussing the problem, I could hear their conversation via intercom but I don’t pay much attention because I have work to do, but before that I try to find my ID in case I left it here yesterday. I didn’t.

“Well, I guess you’ve missed Employee of the Month.” I don’t have to look to know whose voice is. It’s Grace Lynn.

“Shut up, Grace. What happened during the meeting?”

“You want me to shut up or to talk?” She is teasing.

“I know you won’t shut up about gossip so?”

“Well” Grace leans over my desk, telling me about how Mr. Tennent showed up in the meeting and told Jonathan that he’s not going to be his client though they had an agreement two days ago.

“Rob.” Jonathan’s voice comes from the intercom. “Get me Mr. Tennent, confirm him about the meeting.”

“Yes, Mr. Holt.” Grace waves at me, I mouthed her thank you for covered the meeting for me.

I set the meeting for Jonathan and the day goes on as busy as usual.

I don’t go back home before my boss leaving so working overtime is something I familiar with.

It is around nine p.m. when Jonathan calls it a day. He’s been working with Tennent’s agreement for hours after the meeting.

“You know that you don’t have to stay this late with me.” He says when we share an elevator.

“You can’t even find your pen, Jonathan.” I have his permit to address him by his name.

He shrugs his shoulder before changing subject. “You want me to call a cab?”

“No. I’m good. Good night, Mr. Holt.” I say, he won’t reply as predicted.

Jonathan has a car and a chauffeur waiting outside the building and I have a train to catch. I watch him get in the car, remember how we first met when I applied for a job and he was my interviewer.

I should have been an accountant that was what my resume had written, instead Jonathan hired me as his secretary because he prefers male secretary rather than female, no offense with gender but his latest secretary got the message wronged and thought that Jonathan had a feeling for her before it became more complicate, he fired her and hired me.

Somehow I think it becomes more complicate when I’m his secretary because the last time my boss dated someone, she slapped me on my face after I gave her a comment about her birthday’s present for Jonathan which he’s obviously going to refuse it and when he did, I got slapped. She’s angry because I know him better, but it’s my job to know better than anyone, maybe even better than himself. However that was two years ago I don’t see my boss dating anyone lately.

      “Excuse me, Mr. Kelly?”

I turn around to find who called my name. It’s a guy who looks familiar but I can’t put a name with a face. He’s wearing hoodie and a pair of blue jeans.

      “Yes?”

“Oh it’s really you. I thought that I might miss you. You dropped it this morning.” He hands me my ID card.

“I knew I didn’t forget!” I acclaim. Now I remember when I met this man. I bumped into him this morning but he wore a suit at the time. “Thank you. It’ll cost dollars to get a new one.”

“Judging by the firm you work I don’t think that’s going to be a problem.”

“You saw my ID so you know I’m not a lawyer.” I put my ID into my briefcase, and look again to make sure it stays there.

“I only see an ‘executive’ part after that it becomes blurry.” He grins and I have to admit that he’s got a beautiful smile.

“I’m going to have my late dinner. Will you join me?”

      “With pleasure.”

“I’m Robert. Well, you already know that.” I offer him a handshake. He accepts my hand and shakes it firmly.

      “I’m Matt.”

Matt is an incredible funniest human being I’ve ever met. We’ve been sitting in the diner for only ten minutes and he already makes me laugh myself into tears. He works at Preston Media, a company that Jonathan tried to get as a client a few years back but fail.

Matt is very charming and friendly, his smile is so bright I cannot resist smiling back. He’s got warm brown eyes and long eyelashes. His hair is not natural blond but the color suits him well.

      “Earth to Kelly.”

“What?” I find myself staring at him for far too long. “Sorry.”

“It’s alright. Not so many people looking at me like you do.”

I was going to ask how but on second thought I shouldn’t. It could get awkward than it already is.

I am openly gay, Jonathan knows it, my colleagues know it, but Matt doesn’t. I don’t want our friendship ends before it starts.

“It’s almost ten.” Matt is looking at his watch. “You want me to walk you to the station?”

“You don’t have to do that.” I reply trying to make it more living with a smile. However, I still find a disappointment in his eyes that makes me regret turn down his offer. “Dinner’s on me.”

“You don’t have to do that.” I look up finding him mimicking my expression. Who can mad at that smile?

I insist to pay for dinner so he insists to walk me to the station in return. It’s not a long walk, though, only five minutes top.

“Thanks again for the ID.” We shake hand again, this time Matt uses both hands.

      “See you soon, Kelly.”

I want to watch him walk off but he’s still standing in front of me waits for me to get in the station.

“Well, then.” I let him wins you-walk-and-I-walk game then walk down the stairs.

Next morning I get to the firm as my usual time, preparing report for partners meeting. A few minutes later Jonathan arrives at his office. He’s wearing 3-pieces pinstripe suit makes him look powerful and attractive. I’m always fascinated with his sense of fashion.

“Good morning, Mr. Holt. Your report’s on the table and the meeting starts in ten minutes. You’ve a meeting at ten and a court at one o’clock.”

“You made me realize how much I missed you yesterday morning.” He’s definitely in a good mood today judging by a slightly smile on his face.

Yesterday, I was thirty minutes late and the day had gone crazy. “It won’t happen again.” I assure him.

After Jonathan’s ten o’clock meeting he’s prepping his client for the court at conference room so I sit alone at my desk working on his schedule.

The phone’s ringing I look at the screen seeing it’s from reception. I answer with my formal sentence.

“Kelly, there’s a man from…” There’s pause I could hear the man answers then Julia talks to me again on the phone. “From Preston Media wants to see Mr. Holt. He doesn’t have an appointment so I want to check on you first.”

“Ah…yes you can sent him here.”

The only one person I know from Preston Media is Matt so I surprise seeing him walks to my desk. He looks different from yesterday when he’s not in hoodie and jeans but a custom tailored suit that makes him looks like a boss.

      “Matt, why’re you here?”

“It’s good to see you too, Kelly.” He smiles brightly. I see him glancing at Jonathan’s office before stop at my desk.

      “You want to see Jonathan?”

Matt raises his brow when he heard me addressed my boss by first name then he answers. “After I met you yesterday I think I’m interested to do business with Benson Holt.”

“Last time we approached Preston Media; you turned down the offer and went with another firm.”

“Well last time your boss didn’t talk to me. I let my CFO handled it. Now I approach him myself to show my intention.”

The way he talks makes me curious. I remembered the CFO who came to the firm after having lunch with Jonathan two years ago. Jonathan thought he had this client but somehow it didn’t work. I don’t see how it’s going to work this time.

Before I could say anything, Jonathan comes back from the preparation with the client. He sees Matt, his expression changes.

“Matthew Preston, to what do I own the pleasure?”

I look at Matt again and now his name pops up to my memory. Of course I heard this name before it’s the CEO and a founder of Preston Media. I’ve no idea it’s him, it’s Matt whom I bumped into yesterday and he didn’t mention anything about his rank in the company or his job description. He just said his name is Matt and works at Preston Media.

If I could see myself right now I’m sure I just drop my jaw.

“Let’s talk inside, shall we?” Matt points to the office. He’s trying so hard not to laugh at me. I exchange a look with my boss who obviously surprised, not as much as I do but still surprise and curious.

Jonathan closes the door behind him but that doesn’t mean I cannot hear their conversation as long as the intercom is on and it’s still on.

I’m sitting on my chair watching the two guys discussing the business. They’re sitting on the sofa. Matt says he wants Benson Holt represents him. The contract he made with another firm is yearly and now on review so this is a good time for him to consider Benson Holt.

It takes twenty minutes before Matt comes out of the room. He looks at me with his cheerful smile. I’m thinking about following him to ask what’s going on but when I look into the office I see Jonathan looking at me with curiosity that I cannot avoid but to go inside his office.

“Do I need to know what’s going on between you two?” Jonathan asks “You heard what he said.”

I shut the door immediately, walk toward him, and sit opposite my boss.

“I met him yesterday.” I begin. “He waited until I clocked out to return my ID. I’ve no idea it’s Matthew Preston, he only said he works there.”

Jonathan look at me disbelief, I don’t blame him because I couldn’t believe it myself either. How comes the man I met yesterday turns out to be a billionaire.

      “And that’s it?”

“Well, we had dinner but it’s nothing. We just talked.” I feel hot all over my face. I can imagine how red it is right now.

“It’s not my concern whom you dating I just want to understand why the guy I tried to catch two years ago changed his mind and wants to do business with us.”

“I don’t know and we’re not dating. We just met, we’re friend.”

Jonathan’s icy blue eyes are staring at me as if I said something stupid.

      “What?”

“Nothing.” He stand up I follow. “I never ask things from you before, Rob, if we’re in business with Preston Media I hope you can separate work and personal.”

“You don’t have to worry about that Jonathan. If a guy asks me to choose between work and him then he shouldn’t date me in the first place.”

“Oh Robert Kelly, you’re so sweet.”

“Shut up.” Clearly he just messes up with me even when I say something serious.

After I walk out of his room I try to catch Matt at the elevator, unfortunately he’s already gone. I can look into his office’s phone number from my desk but I don’t think I should call, that number is for business not for friend call or something and I’ve to get pass his secretary first if he has one.

Once I return to my desk the phone is ringing, Jonathan is in his office working, I answer the phone. It’s from Grace, Mr. Benson’s secretary.

“Mr. Holt.” I talk to him via intercom after hung up with Grace. “Mr. Benson wants you in his office.”

Jonathan looks at me through the glass door. We both know why Benson wants to see Jonathan after he just met the CEO of Preston. I watch my boss walks pass my desk to the other side of the floor where Mr. Benson’s office located.

My eyes catch something odd on my desk, a note with an unfamiliar handwriting. I pick it up and completely forget how to breathe. It says ‘Dinner at 7 – MP’

It’s not a request, not a question. He doesn’t have to wait for my answer and I know that he’ll waiting for me in front of the firm… I’m wrong about the last part because when I leave the building he isn’t there.

I look around trying to find him and then there he is, getting out of the limo. His warm brown eyes fix on me, his mouth curves into a smile. My heart skips a beat, I feel like I get butterflies in my stomach. Seeing him walk toward me is almost give me a heart attack.

“H…hi.” The word forms out harder than I think. I don’t have this feeling when we first met. Standing in front of him never seems to make me nervous before.

“Hi, Kelly.” Unlike me he’s so natural and calm.

      “You can call my name.”

“I know I just want you to say it.”

I cannot look directly to him without blush so I look over his shoulder to the limousine behind him. Matt is a few inches taller than me.

      “You ready?”

      “Where’re we going?”

“Somewhere nice.” He gives me an unnecessary wink that makes my heart jumps.

I follow him to the car and get in. The chauffeur drives smoothly. Twenty minutes later we arrive at the restaurant without a conversation. I was looking outside along the ride trying to shake my nerves.

      “What do you think?”

I cannot answer at the moment since I’m overwhelming by the surrounding. He takes me to a place I would never go not because it’s not a good place, it is excellence but my salary couldn’t afford this place.

“Nice.” That’s all I can manage to say even though it’s more than nice. Matt is smiling back at me.

Once we enter the restaurant, music is playing in background the tune is easy to listen that makes me calm a little.

The waitress takes us to the table apparently Matt already made a reservation, she collects the ‘reserved’ sign and hands us menus.

      “Wine?”

      “Yes.”

Matt orders red wine, appetizer, and main course for both of us. The waitress takes order then leave. I try to sit as relaxed as I can; enjoying the music but sitting across him makes it’s hard to be relaxed.

“Why were you at the firm?” I ask.

“If I want to talk business, I’ll talk to your boss, Robert.” Not so many people call me Robert, mostly Rob. When Matt calls me by name, the way his mouth and tongue form the word it sounds intimate, and gives me a spark.

“It’s odd.” I rub my forearm under my long sleeve shirt. “You met me yesterday and today you talked to Jonathan about becoming a client.”

“As I told Mr. Holt, my currently legal firm is on review I want to expand my possibility. Benson Holt is a good firm with many great lawyers; your boss is one of them.” Matt looks into my eyes and says. “There’s nothing going to come between us.”

My heart thudding so loud, my face turns red I’ve to avoid eyes contact that’s when I see the waitress comes back with our wine and appetizer. She leaves us again after pouring the wine.

I look at the color of ruby red liquid in my glass, smelling its essence before taste it. The wine smoothly enters my mouth. The sense of oak is strong and it is bitter so mature and masculine like Matt.

“You know how to taste wine.”

“I learn lots of thing from Jonathan.” I swallow wine again, less bitter than first time.

      “Should I be worried?”

      “About?”

“You and your boss. I’m jealous already.”

“I’ve been working with him for five years…” I pause. “Matt, what’re you trying to do?”

The meal is served so I don’t get the answer right away. Matt waits until the waitress’s gone then his attention is back to me.

“I think you know exactly what am I doing.” He says with a gentle smile on his face. His eyes warm me. I can feel his touch without him touching me.

      “We just met.”

“And here we are having our second date.”

The conversation leaves at that point. I enjoy the course he chose for me, laugh with his sense of humor. I’m having a great time…we’re having a great time.

Mostly all of these leads to one end, in bed at either of us place, but that doesn’t happen. Matt sends me home. I’m thinking about kissing him before get off the car. It should happen however, it doesn’t. Maybe we know what will happen next if we kiss, we couldn’t stop, we wouldn’t…I won’t and that will lead to my bed with him in it.

I’m not disappointed while watching his car slowly move off. It means we take this seriously.

Jonathan doesn’t come to the firm this morning; he’s going to a court and will be there until noon.

While I’m sitting alone at my desk, a scene from yesterday slowly replays in my mind and all the time I think about what happened; I should have kiss him. Now I’m regret for what I didn’t do. We didn’t exchange number but he can call me anytime on my desk’s number. I’m staring at as if it’s going to ring. It rings but not from Preston Media, it’s from Jonathan calls to reschedule his meeting in the afternoon. He sounds upset which means the trial doesn’t go well.

It’s seven in the evening, Jonathan sit in his office working the case. I watch him work since I already clear mine an hour ago. Staring at the phone that’s not going to ring is depressing.

The voice from intercom comes instead. “Rob, you can go home. I’ve Walter working in the library; I can call him if I need anything. You should go to sleep or go wherever you have to.”

“If you’re talking about Matt then no he’s not here.”

“Oh. After two days he already changed his mind.”

I shoot him a glance across the desk but he looks too tried for me to mad at him.

“You should go home too, Jonathan. You look horrible.”

I get up, grab my bag, nod at him then go to the elevator.

I’m hoping to see Matt waiting outside the building as he did the first day we met. He’s not there or anywhere nearby.

It feels odd riding a subway home though I use it daily. The sky is so dark when I come out the station. The apartment is two blocks away, I stop at a shop to buy dinner then walk on.

I almost lose my grip after seeing a man standing in front of my apartment. He’s wearing a hoodie and a pair of dark jeans. I know exactly who he is.

“Matt” I calls out. “How long have you been waiting?”

“I should have known you’re working late.” His smiling’s always cheerful.

      “You want to come in?”

      “No. I don’t think so. I mean...I’m sorry. I can’t.”

Matt takes me into his arms, out of the blue he kisses me or I kiss him, cannot explain what really happens because when our lips meet, all the feelings burst out. Like drinking a glass of wine, I taste him, explore him. His lips are soft and tasteful. His hunger is like a fire ready to burn me inside out. His arms hold me dearly. His hand traces along my spine, the other fondles the back of my neck.

I grasp his hoodie, trying to balance myself since it all happens so sudden. Our kiss is long and profound. Once we part, I feel complete. Matt fulfills my emptiness I never realize I had.

“You waited here for hours just to kiss me.”

“It’s worth it, isn’t it?” He kisses my forehead. “Good night, Robert.”

“Good night, Matt.” I watch him crosses the street realizing how fast my heart is beating.

I spend the night staring at ceiling, playing the kiss over and over again in my head until I’m too tired to keep my eyes open.

The cafe I usually get coffee is one block away from the firm. I get Caramel Macchiato and plain bagel for Jonathan and White Mocha for myself. When I walk into the building, Jonathan is right behind me. I hand him his coffee and bagel, his blue eyes glimpse at me.

      “What?”

      Jonathan obviously ups to something.

“Are you sure you don’t have anything to tell to me?” His gaze makes me uncomfortable as if he could see right through me.

      “What do you mean?”

“Somebody is in a good mood today.’

“I always am an optimistic, starting my day with a smile.”

We’re the only two person who waiting for elevator, I really wish someone else is here because I know when we enter the elevator he’s going to ask a question.

“Did you have sex with Preston last night?”

“W…What?” Even I know it is coming, he still catches me off guard. I shoot him a look clearly he just messes up with me, again. My face turns red and that satisfies him even more.

“Obviously, something happened yesterday.” Jonathan observes. I keep my mouth shut for the rest of our ride. There is nothing to tell him. I’m not going to share what I have with Matt to my boss for sure. It’s privacy.

Jonathan seems to enjoy himself after successfully made fun of me. He goes to conference room for partners meeting I takes his briefcase and go to my desk.

I sip my coffee while filing papers that scatter on my desk. There are memos, contracts et cetera. My eyes catch on one file addressed Preston Media; it’s a contract between the firm and Matt’s. This means he’s going to be our client, Jonathan’s client. I look into Jonathan’s schedule because he reiterates me to set a meeting with Matt after the papers are done. I want to set a meeting for today but that’s not going to happen since my boss has two meetings this afternoon so tomorrow at nine is the date. I wait until partners meeting overs to inform him.

I call Preston Media for the first time after knowing that Matt is a CEO, I used to speak with his CFO years ago. His secretary is the one who answers the phone apparently Matt isn’t in the office so I leave a message about the meeting and phone number for him. After lunch I get a phone call from Matt’s secretary confirm tomorrow’s meeting, so everything’s all set.

I take a train to my apartment as always. It’s been awhile I come back home before sunset including Jonathan as well, he might having a drink at his favorite bar at this moment, not that I concern he has a meeting tomorrow. He can take care of himself…mostly.

Thinking about tomorrow, it’s hard to believe that I just met Matt few days ago and now I totally fall for him. And he’s going to be my boss’s client. It’s weird but I’m glad it happens.

The rest of the night, I’m staring at the ceiling, again. Anxious and excite about tomorrow, hoping that everything goes well. This is big for both Jonathan and the firm, Preston Media is a big company, could bring a lot of business. For me…I’m happy that I get a chance to see Matt more often.

I don’t remember what time I fall asleep, I remember whose face I see in my dream.

Next morning, I come to work on time. Lack of sleep doesn’t affect my routine. I check mailbox, turn out the meeting is in conference room not in Jonathan’s office because Mr. Benson wants to join.

When I look at the time on my computer, the meeting begins, neither Jonathan nor Matt comes to see me first, well, why would they. From where I sit, cannot see the conference room, going to Grace’s desk is the only excuse to see the meeting.

I leave my desk, passing the reception and there he is, Matthew Preston in his gray suits sitting in the conference room. I only see his back but that’s worth it. Mr. Benson sits across him, talking, he looks satisfy so the meeting goes well so far. Having Preston Media as a client is a win to the firm. Next to him is my boss who…is now looking at me like I’m not supposed to be here, well, I shouldn’t so I walk on to Grace’s desk direction. I just give Jonathan a leverage to make fun of me.

“Hi, stranger.” Grace Lynn greets me before I could form a word. I don’t come to her desk or Mr. Benson’s office as much as she comes to mine. “Obviously, you didn’t come here to see me, you just wanted to walk pass the conference room, so if you excuse me I’ve a lot of work to do.”

“Grace, don’t give me cold shoulder. I really want to see you.”

“Really?” She raises her brow, giving me an I-know-what-you-up-to look.

“OK. You caught me. How did you know?” I raise both hands as a gesture to surrender.

“I don’t. I just did. Gosh! This is too easy.” She’s laughing so hard, there’s tear in her eyes.

“Oh, god.” I put hand on my forehead. How can I fall for that one so easily? No one knows about me and Matt except Jonathan and he’s not talkative type. And now Grace knows.

“Don’t worry. I’m not going tell anyone.”

I was not worried until she says that.

“Well then, good to see you Grace.” I retreat to my fortress.

An hour later, the meeting overs, Jonathan walks back to the office, grinning at me.

“My dear Robert Kelly,” The way he addresses me he definitely ups to something. I wonder what it is this time. “Since you’re the one who bring Preston to the firm, I’d like to give you a day off so, go on.”

“I don’t think I know what you mean.”

“You’ve lunch with Preston so get out of here before I change my mind.”

Jonathan doesn’t have to speak twice. I grab my back, nod at my boss who seems to enjoy himself, and walk to the elevator where Matt is waiting.

      He greets me right away.

“He did give you a day off!”

“I’m just as surprised as you are. Let’s get out of here.” I push the button repeatedly in case Jonathan changes his mind.

Well, I’m too paranoid since we walk out the building undisturbed. Matt takes me to the restaurant. It’s early for lunch but who cares? We just want to be alone and this place is quiet enough.

The waitress pours champagne for both of us.

“A celebration?” I ask. Wonder what occasion it is.

“I guess I’m in good hand.”

“Of cause, Mr. Holt is the greatest lawyer, he’s going to take care of you and your business.”

“I don’t mean him. I mean you.” He smiles lightly.

      “Oh.” I blush.

His gaze fixes on me, the world around us seem to be fading. Once again my heart skips its beat while I’m looking at him.

“I’d like to make a toast.” Matt says, raises his glass of champagne. “To Robert, for dropped his ID card that brought us together.”

The scene from that day repeats itself in my head. It could have been anyone who picked up that ID, instead it was Matt.

“Well, to Matt,” I raise my glass as well. “The man I bumped into that day.”

He’s grinning at me it’s impossible not to return one. We clink glasses.

      “To us.” Matt says.

      “To us.” I reply.
