Scientists are looking into a bacterial ailment that is killing and  sea lions around the California coast . Twelve Dead Sea lions were discovered in Bodega Bay , and  more than 70 ailing sea lion were sent to the Marine Mammal Center . The ill sea lion were underweight , had stomach ulcers, and acted sluggishly .

Leptospirosis, caused by the leptospira bacteria, can cause kidney damage and can infect people if they come into touch with the body fluids of an affected animai. The disease has already flipped from sea lions to people three times , all of which were researchers working on sea lions  who got renal failure .
