Organizing Paragraph
In the “note book”
I. Sequential Order
ท Use the sequential order when you want to show the order of events.
ท Use in short stories, science projects
ท Words used :: next, then, during, last, later, once
II. Spatial Order
ท Shows how people or objects are arranged
ท Words used :: around, below, center, in front of, outside, surrounding, to the left, to the right
III. Cause-and-Effect Order
ท The cause is what makes something happen.
ท The effect is the result from a cause.
ท Used in historical and scientific writings.
ท Words used :: as a result, because, caused by, consequently, due to, for this reason, if

IV. Compare-and-Contrast
ท 2 ways

๐ By subjects
ท Used in science and historical stories
ท Words used :: Compare ~as, also, in the same way, like, likewise, similarly
Contrast ~ but, however, instead, in contrast, on the other hand, unlike
V. Order of Degree
ท You may use to present information in order of increases to decreases or least important to most important.
ท Used in persuasive paragraph.
ท Words used :: even less, even more, finally, first, from
to, furthermore, least, most, to
In the “book”
- Sequential Order
ท Show the order that events occur
ท Can be used to give directions/show steps in process
ท Chronological order is a special type of sequential order that used to tell a story in which events happen over time.
ท Use transition words [[ex. first, then, once, etc.]] in sequential order
- Spatial Order
ท Show how people and objects are arranged in a space
ท Use direction words [[ex. in the center, to the edge, etc.]] in spatial order
- Cause-and-Effect Order
ท Organize a description of the reasons certain events happen
ท Explain how one cause leads to one or more effects/ how several causes contribute to one effect
ท A cause is what makes something happen.
ท An effect is what result from a cause.
ท Use transition phrases [[ex. because of, as a result, etc.]]in cause-and-effect order
- Compare-and-Contrast Order
ท Two ways to compare and contrast things :: by subjects or by features.
ท The feature-by-feature focuses on the features, or characteristics of things.
ท In subject-by-subject organization, you must first describe one of the items and then the other
ท Use transition words and phrases [[ex. like, unlike, another difference, etc.]]in compare and contrast order
- Order of Degree
ท Present information in order of increasing or decreasing importance, usefulness, or familiarity
ท Used in persuasive paragraphs
Building Compositions

- Composition is a piece of writing made up of several paragraphs.

๐ Every paragraph should be related to the THESIS STATEMENT
ท Conclusion
In the “book”
- A composition is a piece of writing made up of several paragraphs.
ท Unity in a composition means that the ideas in each paragraph should support and explain the thesis statement.
ท Coherencemeans that sentences and paragraphs in a composition connect logically and smoothly to each other.
- A composition has three parts :: an introduction, a body, and a conclusion.
ท The introduction
๐ The fist part of a composition
๐ Introduces to topic
๐ Contains thesis statement, main ides, purpose of composition
ท The body
๐ Come after introduction
๐Consists at least three paragraphs; each one support, develop, or help explain the idea presented in the thesis statement.
ท The conclusion

๐ Rounds out / bring composition to a close
- Introduction
ท Includes a thesis statement that tells readers what your composition is about
ท Types of introductions
1. Use a strong description
2. Start with an anecdote, a brief story that is interesting or funny.
3. Make an interesting statement which can catch the reader’s attention.
