    Lesson.4 :: Wilderness Wandering  [[Page.33]]
    -          During the long trip to Palestine, the Promised Land, the Israelites (as well as Moses) went through a lot of hardships and the Israelites started grumbling to God.
    ·         First, they were thirsty because they found only bitter water, so God provided pure water by having Moses strike the rock with his staff, which made water came out.
    ·         Second, they were hungry, so they complained/grumbled. Moses told them that ‘You are not grumbling against us, but against the Lord.’ However, God provided them manna (bread from heaven) daily and he told them to pick only enough for themselves and family. The Israelites later on complained again that they were bored of manna, so God gave them quail food (kind of meat).
    ·          After that their complaining against Moses and God got worse. God then sent poisonous snakes among them, so the Israelites realized and God take snakes away. God also told Moses to make & put a bronze serpent on a pole, anyone who looked at the bronze serpent was healed of his/her snakebite.
    -          God’s intention in allowing the Israelites to be hungry and thirsty was to build faith
(he wanted Israel to understand the He could be trusted to care for all their needs)
    -          All of those things God provided (water, manna, bronze serpent) represent Jesus
    ·         Water = Jesus himself said that ‘if anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink’
    ·         Manna = Jesus called Himself the ‘true bread from heaven’
    ·         Bronze serpent on the pole = compares to Jesus being lifted up on the cross.
    -          Israel needed good leadership and organization during the journey to the Promised Land. God decided to use Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, to help him learn how to lead large group of people (along with the animals).
    ·         Jethro suggested Moses to select good people and make them heads of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens group of people. (1,000/100/50/10)
    -          Actually the Promised Land was not that far away but what lengthened the trip was the Israelites’ grumbling, which was caused by a lack of faith and led to rebellion. Sin made the journey long and hard.

    -          Types of laws in the Bible
    1.       Moral law – (relating to the Ten Commandments) => eternal
    2.       Ceremonial law – (ritual, sacrifice, etc.) => not existing now [already cut off at the cross]
    3.       Civil law – (having to do with government) => temporary
    4.       Health law – (clean and unclean food) => sanitation and existing
    -          The place where God met his people is in the desert of Sinai ‘in front of the mountain.’ When God promised to Moses from the burning bush, He said that after Israel was delivered, they would worship God on ‘this mountain.’
    ·          Therefore, the mountain of Moses’ call and the mountain of the giving of the law are one and the same mountain.
    -          The first step of meeting God was the do according to God’s instructions. The Israelites were to wash clothes, clean up, and consecrate themselves before showing up at the foot of the Mt. Sinai. They were to dress up and be on their best behavior.
    -          When God descended to the top of the mountain and spoke, thunder rolled, lightning flashed, trumpets blasted, and a cloud covered the mountain as well.
    -          God used those lights and sounds because He wanted Israel to know that His relationship with them was very important. He also wanted them to recognize who He truly was.
    -          God gave the Israelites Ten Commandments for them as a covenant (contract). The Ten Commandments demonstrate ‘Love’ (God’s love to us) and call forth love (from us to God and other people).
